No longer a poor man after a dinner like that. Lol Fantastic Cheryl. I'll be making this recipe .You're a Wee star in our time of needing distractions, lovely cuddles and a bite to eat. Love to you and family. Jason in Belfast. Stick with it xxx
It’s funny but what I call eating poor is usually the best tasting and most filling food with that wonderful comfort factor. Love this dish and the memories it stirs. Such a fan of yours Cheryl!
I grew up on this and can still see me ma cooking this on the stove in a big saucepan in the 1970s. I’m still eating it to this day and is up there with bacon and lentil soup and beef cobbler as my favourite winter warmers.
Only change I would add is something to thicken the sauce/gravy. (I'm thinking a bit of corn starch or even barley.) I have always preferred thicker gravies & sauces over the brothy "au jus" style. This recipe also works with frozen premade meatballs. Looks yummy!
Looks tasty. I make a version using cubed beef, add celery, add bay leaf, and use beef broth/stock vs water. Also, if you want it thicker, you can do a little corn starch slurry, and add it while it's still hot/boiling (right before you turn it off). That will thicken it up nicely (just don't use too much).
Excellent, Cheryl! I never knew the name but this type of stew has been very common in my life. Sometimes we make it from remnants of the refrigerator [leftover vegetables plus a canned or frozen plus whatever meat can be cut down into bite-sized pieces]. Sometimes we add elbow macaroni for more bulk. Like you shared - it can be adapted to whatever is on hand. So glad you shared this bit of comfort food for a cool, fall night!
Been poorly since March,so been home a LOT. Thankyou for keeping me company & bringing back great comfort food from my childhood,as brought up by Scottish parents. You have inspired me to cook more 'from scratch' meals, again xx
That looks absolutely delicious. I hope I can find a rutabaga because I know that really adds some great flavor. Thanks for sharing. Have a Blessed day.
This was my mum's mince stew, minus the garlic and tomato paste lol she would make a big stock pot full to feed us for a few nights. I've adapted it a fair bit, but it's my kids' favourite!
I make it all the time in winter iuse frozen mixed veg in mine with the mince and onions and usually I add a Colemans beef casserole mix in.where I live we call it lobbies and where I was brought up mum called it scouse in winter on a Monday mum use to make it for our tea using the left over meat from the Sunday dinner. If the was bno meat left she used to use corned beef love fran xxx
Oh yum! I’ve been making this stew for probably 45 years. My Scottish gran used to make it. My kids ring me now & say they’re coming over and can i make it, lol. I toss some worcestershire sauce in it too. Although i’m told the wooster sauce we have here in Australia isn’t the same as the pommy one. But it still tastes great with fresh rolls with way too much butter 🤤
My mam made something similar when we were kids, she always made meatballs with the mince though. Havent had it in years, might have to make it this week though. Thanks for the little taste of nostalgia:)
🙂 I make this same dish, Sometimes I thicken it so it's more of a stew. Since I don't have electricity I use my gas grill which I've put a large pizza stone on the grate, preheat it. Preheat the crockpot liner with boiling water then while grill & stone are heating, I heat whatever I'm making then put the ingredients into the crockpot liner, cover with foil. Place on the stone in the grill, leave outside burner on low for several hours to cook. My "crockpot" meals turn out fantastic. You can use the liner to cook in a regular household oven. Just leave on medium until it bubbles then turn down to low. Don't use the lids that come with the crockpot in the grill or oven, the handle melts.
What a great, simple recipe...and perfect for the weather we're having here in Southern Ontario right now. And all the ingredients (except for the meat) are inexpensive staples...I love recipes that give me enough food for a couple of meals on a low budget.
Looks amazing! Mince and tatties and veg comes to mind! Scottish lassie living in Florida! Luv this will be giving it a go! Looks amazing 🏴 Miss my Scottish food
Love to see what you cook, also adore your slippers. Could listen to you for a long time. One day maybe get over there. Poor mans stew very similar to what we grew up with. Comfort food
Cooked this and its was delicious, well cooked chunks of veggies and steaming warm, should have known a Scotch lass would have some winter warming recipes.
Oh boy that looks so tasty and I bet that would warm up my hands! It's freezing right now in Devon. :( I still think I should come live with you and your family ;)
I make a big pan of this and eat one portion that night and save the rest in portion sized tubs in the freezer, its great to warm you up on cold nights when you just want something quick and tasty, I think mine is missing those herbs though, thanks for the great video!
Growing up, we too had a "poor man's supper", but ours was ham and beans with cornbread. My mom was not a good cook at all, and she didn't enjoy cooking either, so before I took over the cooking as a young teen, we would cycle through 3 or 4 meals that she was comfortable making... SOS, goulash, poor man's supper, and the good old "mom casserole". Lol
Great video i must give it a go looks lovely.always watch your videos.i get great ideas from them from chloe, ben and the james kids from burnley,Lancashire
It looks delicious!😋 Had to look what swede was, never heard of that before in an English spoken recipe. (I'm Dutch) But now I know what it is, and it's one of my favourite vegetables.
Looks delicious, I've been craving turnip lately but its just the two of us and we never get through a whole one before it goes bad. A recipe like this would definitely help. Will add it to the meal ideas for this winter. We enjoyed a lovely mince and tatties last night. I normally call it deconstructed shepherds pie. So when I called it the proper Scottish/UK name my daughter was a bit confused on what we were about to eat. lol
Great video Cheryl looks lovely and cant wait for your roast tatties.. I'm considering getting an Air Fryer. Do you have an fave recepies. Best wishes x
Just popped my "Marmite" in the oven for a couple of hours with this recipe. One change...I'm trying some Sweet Potato in the mix. First time in my 72 years I bought any! Roll on 2 hours or so.
Love this recipe, the simple ingredients are the best. You just can't beat this. Your ground beef looks amazing, like you I always get mine from a reputable butcher. Love the little glimpse of your monster slippers. Would love to see what you look like, maybe you could just give a quick hello sometime :)
Hello from across the pond lol I just made similar last week and yes the next day is better if you can wait which we could not! Crusty loaf a must! Blessings to you and yours Ontario Canada Thankyou 🐝🏴
I came across your channel just by chance, and I'm so glad I did. This recipe is brilliant. I've just been looking at some of your other videos and they are superb !! Liked & subscribed
A steaming pot looks good as the snow falls outside my window, here on the shore of Lake Michigan. Stay well too, Cheryl.
We had that same snow a few hours earlier in south central Wisconsin! Everyone eat well, keep warm, and be safe and healthy.
Things haven't been too nice here in Hamilton, on the shore of Lake Ontario. This looks like the perfect meal for this cold and wet weather. 😋
@nebbin dog I grew up in Grand Haven/Spring Lake! Here in KY I sure miss those lovely winter days. :) xx
No longer a poor man after a dinner like that. Lol Fantastic Cheryl. I'll be making this recipe .You're a Wee star in our time of needing distractions, lovely cuddles and a bite to eat. Love to you and family. Jason in Belfast. Stick with it xxx
The lady I cook for asked me to make this for her next week. She'll be 81 in January. She loves your recipes:)
A nice shake of Worcestershire sauce is good too Cheryl. I use the mixed Italian herbs instead of oregano. We had this tonight, a great dish. 💓🇬🇧
It’s funny but what I call eating poor is usually the best tasting and most filling food with that wonderful comfort factor. Love this dish and the memories it stirs. Such a fan of yours Cheryl!
I live in Derry/Londonderry and this town was reared on it! .... delicious

This looks absolutely amazing! A real winter warmer!
I would brown the onions as well for better flavour.
I grew up on this and can still see me ma cooking this on the stove in a big saucepan in the 1970s. I’m still eating it to this day and is up there with bacon and lentil soup and beef cobbler as my favourite winter warmers.

@TheRenaissanceman65 I sprinkle the flour through with the mince when browning it and gravies thicken up nicely that way

Mother used to make this. She served a wedge or slice if cheese if we had it. Always loved it. Keep well😍🇺🇸😍
My mam used to make this in Yorkshire, she called it minced meat hash. We used to have it with bread and marg! Those were the days!
This is so tasty I cooked it in the slow cooker a few weeks ago.can't recommend it highly enough. So economical as well.
I have to try this. It looks amazing! Thanks for sharing!
Ah yeah this is scouse, love it! With red cabbage xx also nice with cauliflower in x

Classic winter food 👍
Good video 👏🏻👏🏻 We call this scouse where i'm from, i make this all the time through the winter.
I was just thinking this when I saw the title of the video. I love a pan of scouse, and like yourself make this also throughout the winter.
And next day add more potatoes, a can of baked beans, an oxo cube and call it blind Scouse!
That looks absolutely delicious. I hope I can find a rutabaga because I know that really adds some great flavor. Thanks for sharing. Have a Blessed day.
Delighted to find this. Just what I want. Simple recipes.
This was my mum's mince stew, minus the garlic and tomato paste lol she would make a big stock pot full to feed us for a few nights. I've adapted it a fair bit, but it's my kids' favourite!
Yum 😋 Always nice to have a meal to prepare and have cook while you are away or at work.

My mam made something similar when we were kids, she always made meatballs with the mince though. Havent had it in years, might have to make it this week though. Thanks for the little taste of nostalgia:)
I love poor mans stew. My mom called it mustgo stew but its the same. Sometimes simple is the very best!!!
