I wouldn't be surprise if the forefathers of the Fijians and the Samoans are dancing over this occasion. I am part Samoan but my Samoan side also has Fijian from Lakemba. I am a proud Fijian, Samoan, Hawaiian Spanish

i o fa fatai lava, we must not be influenced by the white people ways. we must keep the island way and keep our ancestors alive. ALL our ancestors were the navigator across the pacific ocean. my grandmother taught me the Polynesian culture must live for our next generation...We can take only what we need from them & use it against them...that knowledge & education...is power. having our ancestral looking over us is a bonus...nisa bula vinaka fa;a samoa& tonga

The PM.'s words before drinking his 'ava should be in English so the Fijians knows what his talking about. Or, hire an interpreter to help him!

Merita Peters in Samoan culture Any chief or in this case the PM giving the ‘Ava must always stay sacred to its origins and remain in the language of Samoan. Although the language difference tradition must be upheld and only till the PM and the kava ceremony adjourns, than the PM may translate his speech but never during such a archaic and traditional ceremony as the Kava ceremony.

Its more sacred to use our own language, for sure our Ancestors were so proud of this ceremony. No English words can transmit our customs.....
