This fighting is from the shaolin temple. It uses the five animal system. It has roots dating back to 1800s. Grand Master Doc Fai Wong was for many of years teaching in U.S. and returned back to China. There is a lineage of five generations to the art. Those that have studied it truly respect it.
I traveled to Foshan and king mui to see the original schools...it was amazing...I miss teaching choy li fut....I studied under tai sifu hubbard student of grandmaster doc fai wong...amazing men to say the least

Right here is a real good example how self defense differs from sports fighting. In Choy Lay Fu you are using basically the punch you'd never use in MMA. Its a round house punch. In the ring, it can be seen coming a mile away. But in a street fight you need to get it over right now! There is no ref gonna save you. So, taking a chance on a big round house makes since. If you miss, you have practiced in this style what to do next. Practicing keeps you from over committing. I mean, hey, its what John Wayne used🤔😁.

Choy Lay Fut came from Xinhui, Guangdong China. My wife is from Jiangmen, Guangdong China. When I go to visit my wife in China, we visit the home of Chan Heung; the founder of Choy Lay Fut. Xinhui is part of Jiangmen and not Foshan. In fact, Choy Lay Fut was never from Foshan. Choy Lay Fut was only traditionally taught to people from Xinhui and Jiangmen. This is the local tradition. Foshan is famous for Hung Ga and not Choy Lay Fut. I practice and train in Lam Ga Hung Kuen. Lam Ga Hung Kuen is from Foshan and Hong Kong. It was never native to Xinhui or Jiangmen. Xinhui and Jiangmen are famous for Choy Lay Fut kung fu. Whenever I travel around the city of Jiangmen and I see kung fu schools advertised, 90% of the time they are Choy Lay Fut schools. Even my wife took Choy Lay Fut kung fu when she was a girl. This is the local tradition. Foshan does not represent Choy Lay Fut. Xinhui in Jiangmen represents Choy Lay Fut. This Choy Lay Fut Master in the video cut out Xinhui and Jiangmen and only mentioned Foshan. Choy Lay Fut is the traditional kung fu from Xinhui Jiangmen and NOT Foshan. This kung fu Master should be mentioning this. Back in the day if he was not from Xinhui Jiangmen, no one would have taught him Choy Lay Fut because he is from Foshan. Chan Heung only taught people from his region and not from Foshan.
The Choy Li Fut shown in this video is of the Foshan Hung Sing branch, a different branch of Choy Li Fut from the one you are mentioning, which is the King Mui branch of Choy Li Fut, also known as the Chan Family branch.

I’m learning Choy Li Fut, I’ve been practicing for about 2 and a half years. But I came for other forms of martial arts, such as Wushu, Wing Chun, Jeet Kune Do, TaeKwondo, and boxing. My Choy Li Fut sifu says I catch on quick, I guess it steams from my martial arts background since I’ve been learning various forms of martial arts for over 10 years now.

To those that say "KUNGFU IS USELESS WITHOUT MMA" ....probably think Jogging is useless unless you run marathons, exercise is useless unless you are in the Olympics, cooking's useless unless you are a master chef, LIFE is useless unless you are famous. Those in kungfu also learn culture, history, manners, Chinese languages, travel to different lands, and more. These folks will be in great health even in their 80s and 90s. Not so for someone that has his head is pounded into the ground in a regular basis. Being proud of only fighting skill is so limiting..there is more to life.

I think this is the only Kung Fu that is still somehow able to somewhat fight Muay Thai on equal ground. I haven't heard of other form able to withstand Muay Thai.

When they went to restaurants occasionally the emperor would pour tea for the body guards. This is of course against the protocol because you don't have the emperor serving tea to anybody. If this is in the court people can do the kowtow thing to thank the emperor but you can't do this in the public lest you will expose yourself. So the body guards tap their finger on the table instead as a way to kowtow to the emperor secretly. This practice evolves and today becomes a way of saying thank you to the person pouring tea for you. This practice is probably more common in Southern China today I think.
You've already started Hung gar just go ahead and finish the curriculum.the only reason they are identical is because the founder of choy li fut chan heung his first teacher was his uncle who was trained in hung gar.
The systems are highly compatible due to their use of "Peen Sun"/side-body principle, and many techniques and footwork in common, but have different emphasis. Hung gar's curriculum is mostly close range using pressure, capture and hit method, and complemented with a long range fighting nucleus from tibetan white crane / hop gar. Choy lay fut emphasizes long range techniques (that have some things in common with hop gar) but also has a set of close range techniques as contingency.
The CCP cracked down on traditional kung fu for decades in favour of Wu Shu. Glad to see proper kung fu make a comeback in China for historical and cultural reasons even if it is no longer effective as a fighting style in the 21st century.
You have to realize it's not that Chinese martial arts isn't effective anymore. People simply don't understand how to utilize them because they refuse to get into fights. UFC fighters using BJJ all had to lose 500 fights in the gym before they get into a real ring. From the day they start learning, they're going to be losing 2-3 fights per week for the first 2-3 years before they start winning some, most will not be going into the real ring until they've gotten well over 5 years of experience. All these people learning Chinese martial arts won't even go into ONE full contact spar session, how can they expect to fight? No traditional style can ever win in MMA, that is not the point of traditional styles. It is like asking if a calligrapher can write more effectively than a keyboard. They are cultural heritage and each focuses on a certain philosophy and aspect of fighting and aesthetics, however they are all incomplete and too ornate as fighting techniques. Good MMA fighters can incorporate some aspects of some traditional arts into their fighting.

Choy Lee Fut and Hung Kuen is quite similar in some ways
@Daisy Wong not all CLF uses northern kicks. The Fut San Hung Sing CLF lineage doesn't use northern kicks at all. rarely do we kick above the waist.

You've already started Hung gar just go ahead and finish the curriculum.the only reason they are identical is because the founder of choy li fut chan heung his first teacher was his uncle who was trained in hung gar.
Some movements are similar but some Choy Lee Fut branches also use many Northern kicks in their forms (unlike Hung Gar).
The systems are highly compatible due to their use of "Peen Sun"/side-body principle, and many techniques and footwork in common, but have different emphasis. Hung gar's curriculum is mostly close range using pressure, capture and hit method, and complemented with a long range fighting nucleus from tibetan white crane / hop gar. Choy lay fut emphasizes long range techniques (that have some things in common with hop gar) but also has a set of close range techniques as contingency.

The CCP cracked down on traditional kung fu for decades in favour of Wu Shu. Glad to see proper kung fu make a comeback in China for historical and cultural reasons even if it is no longer effective as a fighting style in the 21st century.
You have to realize it's not that Chinese martial arts isn't effective anymore. People simply don't understand how to utilize them because they refuse to get into fights.
UFC fighters using BJJ all had to lose 500 fights in the gym before they get into a real ring. From the day they start learning, they're going to be losing 2-3 fights per week for the first 2-3 years before they start winning some, most will not be going into the real ring until they've gotten well over 5 years of experience.
All these people learning Chinese martial arts won't even go into ONE full contact spar session, how can they expect to fight?

No traditional style can ever win in MMA, that is not the point of traditional styles. It is like asking if a calligrapher can write more effectively than a keyboard.
They are cultural heritage and each focuses on a certain philosophy and aspect of fighting and aesthetics, however they are all incomplete and too ornate as fighting techniques.
Good MMA fighters can incorporate some aspects of some traditional arts into their fighting.

People who practice traditional martial arts can enjoy the culture, philosophy, showmanship and generally get health benefits from the lower intensity of confrontation and focus on form-kata "dances," plus a little real life edge vs untrained people.
MMA practitioners are for sure the toughest fighters in the world but if they really are serious and wanna be strong they will go around with broken noses, brain concussions, arthritis and cauliflower ears. Really it all depends on your lifestyle and personal goals.
