Thanks for watching Jaron! It's all about melody for me, this one was written for a tv music library so it's always got to be melodic in those situations. Stay well! All the best, Stuart
Wow, listening to you play is a moving experience. A true privilege. It’s amazing what talent and countless hours of hard work can produce. A sincere tip of my hat to you!
Thanks for watching and for the kind words! This is an incredible guitar, Collings have really hit it out of the park with this one! Stay well, best wishes, Stuart
Came here to listen to the guitar but man, you are fantastic player, what a pleasure to listen. I love your sound clarity and elegance! You just got new subscriber and a fan!
Ur so great ,Mike has obviously learned from the best .can u pls make a video on top 10 accoustic guitars from cheap to expensive or 5 accoustic guitars from beginner to advanced
I want that! Love the tone, and I prefer a 1 11/16” nut width, which is hard to find in an OM. I’m also thinking about a Martin OMJM, one of the only other higher end OMs with the 1 11/16” nut width. I expect the Collings is quite a bit better, but it’s also quite a bit more pricey. I also want to say that you’re a wonderful player and composer; I really enjoy your music, and your versatility is admirable. You’re not supposed to be that good at finger style, thumb picking, and flat picking and electric.
Thank you so much David, I'm really pleased you enjoyed it! The Martin OMJM is really good but what sets this Collings apart is its unique character - it has a very particular neck carve which is unlike anything else and it makes the 1 11/16 but feel great. I've owned several Collings but this one is more like a vintage Martin in sound and feel
T Gf i have loved it so far. Far more comfortable than usual dreadnoughts because of 000 thickness. Loses a bit of bass but I dont mind because of amazing clarity during recording.
Hi Stuart. Great music. Thanks. Your tests are always most enjoyable. The guitar sounds magnificent. Only, if I can make a suggestion, I would like to hear the naked sound of the guitar, with no reverb or other effect, so that the natural sound of the instrument can be judged .
Thanks for watching Claudio! I'll record a few dry in future, this guitar does sound great without any additional ambience though my room sound does creep into these recordings hence a bit of reverb etc. Stay well, best wishes, Stuart
I've had both Brian - OM1 JL is quite different to all the other Collings models. I've since sold this one in favour of something else but I enjoyed it whilst it was here! All the best and Happy New Year, Stuart
Hi Phil, it is - just not enough Martins in the UK to try and the available few are quite overpriced unfortunately. One day I'll get one from the 1940s! All the best, Stuart
Wow the guitar sounds amazing and your playing is superb. Also I was wondering do you have any thoughts on the exact same model but with adirondack spruce top. I would love to hear them. Cheers
Hi Mr Brokkoli, thanks for watching! I love Adi tops and my last few guitars have had them. I'm not always the biggest fan of Sitka but this guitar is so loud and lightly built that the Sitka sounds great - the Adi on these must be amazing but it also adds over £1000 to the price. This was the only one in the UK so I didn't have to make that choice thankfully! All the best, Stuart
I have the Lage with Adi, and it is amazing. Yes, it did cost an arm and a leg, and I am waiting for them to grow back. Mr. Ryan, your playing is superb, and the sound you extract from your Lage is stunning. Thank you for the post!
@@mnelson56 Thank you Michael! I can only imagine what they sound like with Adi, alas in the UK this was literally the only one. I did enquire when the next one would be available and it was over a year...and with another spruce top!
Wonderful stuff, Stuart, glad to have found your channel. Great guitar and playing as usual, I am thinking of going down in size for something smaller than a dreadnought.
Amazing playing Stuart - just fabulous. Now subscribed thanks!! Hey... I'm thinking of getting one of these beauties... either that or a Martin OM28 Modern Deluxe. Any preferences at your end on this? Martin vs Collings? I'm after a different voice from my Lowden O32. I play mainly finger-style but am currently getting into a bit of flat-picking as well. Would this guitar be a good all-rounder? Will check out some of your courses too - man how to you get to be this good? Ha ha!! The never ending road of practice!!
Hi Dave, I really liked this guitar but a few months ago I sold it and replaced it with a Gibson 1934 Advanced Jumbo. Totally different guitar and more suited to my style these days - the Collings is good for lighter flat picking but doesn't have the headroom to hit it hard and the tone overall is quite bright. Very good for Julian Lage style jazz/gypsy jazz but not so good for Bluegrass etc. There isn't enough headroom for strumming either and I need an instrument that can do all that stuff too hence the Gibson (which I love!). Martins tend to a warmer tone so that may be a better bet and the OM28 is a lot cheaper than this guitar. I've had Lowdens and both the Collings and Martins are a totally different sound. Hope that helps! All the best, Stuart
I really appreciated such a clear review which you conveyed through what I can only describe as quite beautiful playing. What strings are you using - as the sound is so cool?
Hi Jay, I think these were D'Addario Phosphor Bronze 12 - 53 but I actually string it with D'Addario Nickel strings now and it sounds even better - more vintage!
Hi Stuart! Fantastic playing~ this guitar is exceptional. How do you feel about narrow nit width? That’s the only reservation I have about this instrument. Blessings~
Thank you! I'd be cautious about the but width - I had a 1 11/16 but on a Collings OM about ten years ago and ended up selling it as it felt too tight. However, I play a load of electric again these days so the nut width on this guitar feels great to me though would probably feel narrow to a primarily acoustic/fingerstyle player. Easiest way to test is pick up a Strat or Tele, it feels pretty much like that (to me at least). All the best, Stuart
@@StuartRyanMusic Thanks for the insight. I tend to like the 1 3/4 OM spacing, but I’ve got a couple thousand hours in on a strat, so maybe I would like it. 🤷♂️ much appreciated~
Or could you buy a Martin CS 000-18 with Modified V neck, and add an Adi top for less...and it would sound like a Martin b/c it is one? I hope to try out a JL to feel/hear for myself. Beautiful playing, sir.
This is the only guitar that I have owned twice... sadly had to sell the second one I bought, but I got a Waterloo WL-14X that is very similar for a third of the price. Edit: What strings are on this one?
Hi Tyler, yep, I love the Waterloo and can definitely feel some of their DNA in this one - mostly in how light it is. The strings on this are Elixir gauge 12, Collings ship with those I think
Hi, Stuart! That guitar surely sounded awesome, but, I tell you what, brother, it would've sounded like crap in my hands! haha Stuart, let me ask you something: What's the name of a fingerstyle tune that you played on several demos for the North American Guitar, such as for the Bown previously owned by John Renbourn? Cheers, brother.
Hi Joao, I'm usually playing my own pieces on those videos with some occasional Jerry Reed or traditional Irish tunes chucked in. I think the one you're referring to is a piece of mine called 'The Kite and The Line', it's a slow one that moves up the neck. Thanks for watching! All the best, Stuart
That's a very good question Brandon - they were the ones that it had from the store and NO other strings I've tried since have sounded as good be they Elixir or D'Addario! I'm going to have to email the store and ask them what they string with so i can get another set. Collings ship with Elixirs I think but these must have been changed before I bought it.
@@StuartRyanMusic Hi Stuart! Curious if the store got back to you with confirmation of the strings? Sounds fantastic! One small note that might be of interest - you mentioned the asymmetrical nature of the neck due to neck wear: Collings is referring to the bass side of the back of the neck being slightly different (flatter) than the treble side due to playwear, just like Julian's 1939 (a unique feature for a new guitar certainly). You can actually see it in the neck profile cross section here. www.collingsguitars.com/acoustic-guitars/om1-jl/ Martin's neck carves in the 30's went from C at the nut to V up the barrel from the factory. Cheers!
Best guitar review I've ever seen. Great playing, great songs, well recorded, proper playing:talking ratio.
What a dream. 1 11/16 nut, 15" lower bout, spruce top, matte finish, ebony fingerboard. Perfect.
