The story behind Opener’s BlackFly [Pivotal Helix] strange-looking design

- On October 5, 2011, the world witnessed what is considered the first fixed-wing evtol flight ever.
After this first successful flight, Marcus Leng, a retired Mechanical Engineer, realized the huge potential of this technology and decided to pursue his childhood dream and develop a personal aerial vehicle.
Eleven years later and after more than sixty thousand test miles flown in forty different increasingly improved aircraft, the BlackFly is ready for mass adoption. The development of this aircraft was not an easy task. There are three events that influenced the particular design of this strange-looking yet practical, personal aircraft, set to disrupt the transportation industry.
This story all began in a small town in Canada.

the most clever ideas are the simplest . well done.
Say what you want about them but they at least demonstrate real manned flight which is more than any of the big conpetitors have done to this date STILL.

This design definitely seems like the basis for a new type of vehicle. If it was slightly larger with a tiltrotor mechanism and landing gear, it could actually become practical as transportation. I get that it's small so you don't need a pilots license but I bet there will be more specialized licenses in the future for aircraft of this type.
When cruising, the pilot appears to be leaning forward, falling. And when taking off, it looks like it's upside down.
I love watching and following this vehicle. It’s a dream.
I had always wondered about the weird shape and lack of gear. There to allow it to be categorized as an amphibious ultralight raising the maximum weight limit by 90 lbs.

Nice thoughts. There will be problems like this. And many more problems ranging from insurance, liability, weather etc. But those problems are if infrastructure while this is targeting a engineering solution to 3d personal movement.

dislike for the lazy video which looks like a PR brochure with no technical substance.
I love this craft. And I want it to be able to land on water, have the right buoyancy so you could, if needed open the glas and not gain water....and be able to continue in water....the propellers, would need to become the ships screws etc... And start thinking lol...of a millitary functional version. Since this one...is a great design. And I mean...a grand and promising design. Yet! The propeller need to be able to be rotate able independently from the angles of the flaps/wings, so two four of them or some of them could function as direct propulsion, and some as keeping it heights and or lows. Than I think it be even better.
It is powered with electric motors and batteries. It would take some reengineering to make it waterproof, but it could be done. It would not be a very efficient water taxi but it expand its usefulness if it could takeoff from water.
