  • David Lang is a maker who taught himself to become an amateur oceanographer -- or, he taught a robot to be one for him. In a charming talk Lang, a TED Fellow, shows how he and a network of ocean lovers teamed up to build open-sourced, low-cost underwater explorers.
TEDTalks is a daily video podcast of the best talks and performances from the TED Conference, where the world's leading thinkers and doers give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes (or less). I very much second that. Access to the oceans like this without selling both kidneys to fund it,bring it on.

I love it. Sharing something that you guys designed without any intention of making a quick buck from people, but purely to give other people the opportunity to use this thing to and to further our knowledge about the ocean. I wish there were more organizations like this, freely sharing materials/designs for telescopes, microscopes, etc.
And I like that you guys turned it into a public thing, with different people with various domains of expertise providing their own input and helping to improve on the design in one way or another.

If you would like more (geeky) detail on this, search for "floss openrov" where there is an hour long video interview

Is anyone ever going to build "Ocean Sailing Robotic Cleaning type of ROV's " ,that uses wind power, alternate on board power systems that can help clean vast oceans that is currently filled with all types of human created material pollutant's's..like plastics.., etc ? Technologies and flat forms have arrived, humans need more thinkers and doers to come together to implement more than handful of interesting future ideas to solve this earth's many problems.

Why isn't the web site or the kickstarter link in the notes? It is like getting 2 million in advertising and leaving off the price or where you can go online to buy it. Like writing a research paper with no footnotes.

What if you could build a robot that is bottom dwelling sortof crab like and is attached to a suction hose that is hooked up to a dredge on the ice in Nome,Alaska so that no diver has to lose his life anymore. That, somebody has to build and bring on a reality tv show as the future of competition.
