It's mostly just ammo most of the time, and a gun not even worth it in my opinion. I just run on the Hardcore map with just a backpack finding smart mesh usually anywhere going pinnacle labs, and getting a lot more items. Also hitting skeleton observatory on the way, or after which I've gotten anywhere from common to red weapons.

I have never found a Smart Mesh in the dozens of times I ran Crashed Ship. Am I just unlucky or did they change the loot that spawns there?
You are unlucky. Just keep checking, I still see it there all the time.
