Thank you ... this was exactly perfect for my very same WM-D6, which I bought in 1983! It served really well as a field recorder for many years, then as a playback deck for a couple of decades. It was a real workhorse, and I loved it. So when I tried to make digital conversions of my old field recordings, I wanted to use the machine they were recorded on. But the take-up spindle was not taking up. So I had to use an inferior deck. Only, now that I know how easy it is to repair, I've got to ask myself ... Do I go back to those old recordings and re-digitize? Ah! Now I wish I hadn't seen this video!!!
Great video. I managed to get the old belt off (and the new one on) by easing it around the tape mechanism using tweezers, without removing the 'c-stopper' assembly, which is a royal pain to replace without the right tool. Might be worthwhile reminding people to make sure the sliders (eg headphone volume) engage properly with the switches&c on the board when reassembling.
I own several D6 and D6C. Thanks for sharing the short video, handy for belt replacement. However, D6 does sound muddier because its C140 and C240 caps are misplaced and reworked.
Great video. Hi, I just bought one but the play button doesn't engage. After press it, it can go all way down, but cannot engage. All other buttons work. Do you think what could be go wrong. Oh, when the record button is pressed, the play button can engage and I can record.
I'm havingI this problem and thanks to you it can be solved. Where to buy the belts ? There are hundreds for sale over the internet for this model but wich one is the right one ?? What is the length of the proper belt ? Do you have any link where to look for ??
Great vid- I wonder if you have any ideas about how to fix inoperative fast forward/rewind on this machine... Just had a chip replaced on mine and now it won't spool a tape but it still plays and records fine. Ta!
Thank you for the valuable video, but I still need help. I have the same problem you have in your video , I changed the belt, but I still have the same problem. Any suggestions please.
If I had viewed your clip till the end I would have known to take care for the spring. So I had to go through your experiences and had to open it again :) :)
Extremely helpful video, thank you. Gave me the confidence to order and install replacement band, via the link you shared. Got the old girl playing again, yippee! But since neither fast forward or rewind where working, I opened it back up again.... figured out why, though unable to fix that, but worse then found the peak level read nothing and output no longer works:). No idea what happened....sad.
Hello my friend i have a question for you if you might know,i recently got my D6C fully restored, but i have a problem that was not there before. When i press play i can hear the autostop that in engaging every couple of seconds but the noise it does it audible and like a double click.Do you have any idea what to look for in order to fix it?I cannot send it back for the fix cause its 40E for the shipping fees alone...
Hello sir I have a quick question < I have a sony walkman WM-D6 , when I put battery on it after so long in storage, it briefly sounded when I played the cassette , but the sound faded away ,and now no sound at all, is this a sign of a capacitor breakdown , that need to be replaced after so many yrears? it play when I press play. rewinds and fastforward. Please help.
Since it’s opened, I would have added some grease on the gears, and a tiny drop of oil on the flywheel spindles. Also check the azimuth, and adjust the screw if necessary. One can also check the speed accuracy auto vs manual, with a speed test tape. Being quartz it’s fairly accurate, but I find the manual adjust just slightly better.
Thanks for this Vid. Nice Work. I also have a Wm D6C. I bought it defective. Now ive opened it to see what the problem is. I see the Motor is losen, no screws are holding ist. Its also the screws who expand the idler. Where can i get these screws now? Any idea?
Super-helpful video, thank you. Having just ordered a belt, I'm hoping to replicate your success. Question: my Walkman Pro initially turns, then stops - will belt fix that?
Hi there, I have a D6C, when its playing its fine, but lots of static, what it stop playing, there is a buzzing noise from the system (not from the output). Literally the machine is buzzing? Whats wrong :(
Question: I have one and everything seems to be functioning in proper order, however the mic input doesn't seem to function properly, while the line input does. I seem to get a ton of feed back, and if I shout into my mic, it sorta picks up. Any thoughts on the matter?
excellent video I want to service mine and change the line op amp to ne5532 i've heard the counter belt is a real PIA, have you ever done one on a d6c thanks
Technics Guy sadly I have never opened up the D6C before. I'm assuming the mechanical pieces should be similar since the main thing changed was adding in more Dolby NR options.
Hey man quick question! Any idea why the power with batteries does not work? I changed the batteries but nothing turns on? There is corrosion on the terminals and I’ve clean it, not thoroughly tho. Figure it might have at least some juice running... what could it be?
What screwdriver kit did you use? Strangely enough, I couldn't open up two of the screws behind the back cover because the tip of my screwdriver couldn't fit.
There is a lever with a small rubber tyre that is supposed to engage with the flywheel during cue and review. This lever gets stuck due to the grease inside the pivot point hardening over time. Search on tapeheads.net for more info. Common problem on these.

I have a Sony D6C working in part, it only runs at high speed it must have a problem on the spped tune, and it has been opened and some screws have been lost of the cover can be interesting as spare parts or to be repaired?
I tried to replace the belt on my one but it just kept doing the same thing even with a new belt. It just keeps slipping. Think I will just dump the thing as I've spent enough time trying to fix it now.
Just picked up a WM-D6, but I've been having some problems with audio quality. It'll play tapes normally for a few minutes before dropping in volume and getting fairly distorted. Opening up the thing, it looks like my volume rocker is significantly more corroded than yours. Could this be it? Thanks
I just bought a WM-D6c and whenever I put batteries into it, the motor immediately starts running, when I press play, it turns off. If I partially press the play button it will work how its supposed to but I dont want to have to hold the button down the entire time im listening.
Frustratingly, this video won't play for me. The first few seconds play and then it just sits there buffering forever more. Other videos play fine, but not this one. :-(
It turns out that if I close the RUclips app and then open it again, it plays a few more seconds each time, before going back to continuous buffering. Looks like I'll be able to watch it all, but it's going to be painful, lol. Thanks RUclips!
Thanks to you I can listen again to 30 years old recordings I did during my former profession as a journalist for public radio. Thank you very much !
Really well edited & constructive video, thanks!

I just ordered one of these on eBay, and if I ever need to replace the belt I now know how to thanks for the tutorial!
How much did you pay, they’re a fortune now.
@@therestorationofdrwho1865 too much
Thanks. For anyone wondering yes the D6C is assembled in the same way if you want to replace your belt.

I was not able to afford a WM-D6 back in the 1993, so I got a WM-D3 instead that served me well for many years, but I still always wanted a D6.
Fantastic video ! I need to do my belt on my old d6c and d6 players. where can I get a belt please ?
Look on ebay
Thank you very much for posting this video. Now my WM-D6C is working again. 👍👍👍
I have a 35 year old one that I want to get back in good shape. It still plays fine, but the belt is probably in bad shape. Thanks for the video!

Thankyou for this outstanding video. Had my player since '87. Time it was fixed.
DUDE! I cannot thank you enough.
You are so friggin' AWESOME! I was thinking I'd have to junk my beautiful Pro, but now you've shown me just how wrong I was. Thanks a million!!!

I believe the FF/RW functions are controlled by the white plastic gears next to the motor. I'd check and make sure none of those are stripped.
Thank you for the valuable video, but I still need help. I have the same problem you have in your video , I changed the belt, but I still have the same problem. Any suggestions please.
every walkman repair on youtube - change belt. done.

Download the service manual and it will state the diameter and length of the screws. Then you can order a bag online.
Need help unsticking the idler arm, won't FF or rew, plays find. Can't get the little gears off to clean the, any secrets. Thanks.
Thank you I have another pb with my D6. it runs too fast, do you know how to fix it? many thx
thank you, best help for my walkman. Greetings from Hamburg, Germany
I have a WM-D6C also & it wont FF or RW only. Is this easy to fix for an amateur like me or Professional job only? Appreciate any advice. Thank you!!
Cool clip! Changed my belt using this video. Thanks man! 👍
Thanks for this video! Clear explanation and good camera angle.
Super-helpful video, thank you. Having just ordered a belt, I'm hoping to replicate your success. Question: my Walkman Pro initially turns, then stops - will belt fix that?
Most likely yes. The belt is most likely stretched out and loose which is only causing it to spin when it gets some tension.

i need the belt too but your link is not working, can you help please?
I need to replace the belt on mine. Where did you get it? If you can post the pert number that would be fantastic.
Where can I get the parts to replace the belt etc?
What screwdriver kit did you use? Strangely enough, I couldn't open up two of the screws behind the back cover because the tip of my screwdriver couldn't fit.
thank you. My walkman plays and records , yet it does not review or cue although I can hear it whirring. any tips?

I also have that problem and I would appreciate an answer

Pietro I would try spaying the speed adjestmet knob with some TV tuner cleaner to see if that can clean out any gunk and fix the issue.
Are you kidding me? If you do not know what BIAS is, the speed of reproduction is excessive, more than when it was at its best
Thanks for the reply
it can be a problem with the ic itself, as well it can be a problem with bad capacitor

I would sell it

Same issue on my WM D6. but at the moment no solution. Can someone help us about it?
Could always try cleaning it with IPA. Caps maybe your problem.
Nice. Mine is playing, but now I have no sound. Any idea what it could be?
It could be the CP301 muting module. More information and replacements here: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/263260915878
Volume doesn’t work on mine. Any idea what could be a problem? Thanks
This dude doesn't show it but after you flip the PCB to work on it you have to be careful to put it back so the slider catches.
Its c clip btw. Nice rare walkman!

Hello ! I have a question, is the sound stereo with the headphones ? Does the sound comes out of the two sides of a headset ?
Yeah each jack is stereo sound. The device supports two stereo headphones
Nice, thanks mate !
mine is kind of working but it doesnt rec and sometimes after a while makes a very loud noice
is the D6C that much better than the original D6?
Yes if D6C is the early ones with amorphous heads, not really for the later D6C with permalloy heads.
If you want dolby C... otherwise, no difference in sound quality.
how to size rubber that?
I have one not sure if it works
Please turn Down the music. Nice video
Good video but I wish you showed rewind and fast forward thanks
I'm dissolving the speed controller package inside so that I can attempt to replace the FET and transistor, wish me luck
How is it going with the speed controller?
Frustratingly, this video won't play for me. The first few seconds play and then it just sits there buffering forever more. Other videos play fine, but not this one. :-(
