Thank you for making such a detailed tutorial. I like the way you show the proper consistency of the paints and even showed the entire painting process. I'll be giving this a go on my slaves to darkness army for sure!
Amazing and detailed tutorial! I really liked that you moved the pallet so we can see the consistency and how it should look on the pallet. Not something you get to see in a lot of videos. Very helpful!
@@2brushes1cup I have been painting miniatures for a few years, but doing the molten effect was always so.....tricky for me. I have a miniature on my table now that would be perfect for this.
So I don't know how I didn't find your channel before, but after watching this video I immediately subscribed! The final effect is amazing and gives me ideas for my Shadespire/Nightvault Stormcast minis! Looking forward to more awesome tutorials.
The really interesting part, to me was how the 2 browns really defined the molten look. For the longest time the very subtle blending of the white, yellows and orange were so similar, but as soon as the Mournfang was added it completely changed the blade and defined the effect. The Vallejo brown just totally finished it though. Amazing.
Well, I find that that's the case with most paintjobs. It doesn't look very good until the very end so sometimes you just have to take a leap of faith and just go with it ;)
This popped up on my feed, so glad it did! Got yourself a new subscriber as this paint work is new flawless. Cant wait to see what else you bring to the gaming table. :)
I always get intimidated when thinking about painting my Eldar Avatar. Saw your fire sword pics on reddit and was hoping you'd do a video. Thanks!! I think I'll take what I learned from you and try it on an Avatar. Finally!
If possible, you should add in the description the list of paints you used. It would be useful to make sure I have them all before starting the tutorial :) Thanks! It's a very nice tutorial.
This is a good idea, I can provide the list of paints in the video description, but honestly, unless it's a very specific effect that absolutely requires the very same colour that was used in the tutorial - you can just choose any paint that is similar. This effect can be replicated with any combination of white, yellow, orange, red and brown. Moving away from the belief that you absolutely have to have all the same paints as the tutorial to copy the effect is the first step to becoming a better painter :)
@@2brushes1cup You are absolutely right! But sometimes, a beginner feels more confident trying it out with the exact same colors and experimenting later, like myself. I personally do the same thing for cooking. Try the recipe as is, once, then experiment.
Yea, don't get me wrong, there's nothing bad in using the same paints as shown in the tutorial. Hell, I do this all the time if I have the same exact paints and even if I don't I sometimes will just buy some paint recommended by the tutorial cause I'm a complete paint addict and buy way more than I actually need. I know that it's helpful for a lot of people, that's why I always have the paint name shown on the screen and adding them into the description is a good idea that I will implement from now on
With a bit of ingenuity, you could make the sword look like it had an aura. For a paladin maybe yellow or orange around the blade or maybe even blue or green or purple, black for necrotic aura, and white for a regular magical aura.
Love the name my friend. Awesome job on the mini. I just got into the hobby and am looking for pointers which is how i came across your video. Ive seen swords like your before but wondered how it was done. Thank you very much for showing us. Keep up the awesome work!
Thats crazy awesome! I just found your channel recently and im in love with your work.Thank you so much for making videos about painting minis! I have a question for you: would i be able to aply your blending technique if working with oil paint, or it would require a different approach, like changing the consistency/viscosity or even an entirely different technique? (if i get it right, for your blending technique to be aplied, the layers/basecoat need to be dry but the previous small lines/dots from the other colors still wet, right? the consistency of paint used to layers/blending is the same?)
I have no experience with oil paints besides weathering and washes, but from what I know the approach to blending with oils is much different than with acrylics. I'm not nearly competent enough in the topic to give any meaningful advice though.
You don't need much paint if the dilution levels are high enough. I can control the amount of paint on the brush rather well, but you can always wipe the excess on a paper towel if you're not sure if you don't have too much of it
Awesome tutorial. I'm going to try to emulate this effect on Nemsis Force Weapons from Grey Knights in WH40k. Though I only have 2 shades of blue and white, hopefully it turns out well.
Hot damn dude, that's absolutely great. I also appreciate you including long start-to-finish shots for a technique heavy tutorial so we can actually see how it's done.
Sorry, I deleted my previous comment. The music is by Night Verses not Tesseract. Tesseract is on the other video :D you can always check in the description of the video what music I used
I would love that too :D unfortunately due to limitations in my gear I was not able to place the camera closer to the mini and still have a comfortable way of painting. I just bought a new lens that should allow me to zoom closer to the model.
I don't believe in colour conversion charts. Just use white, yellow, orange, red, brown and dark brown. Any will do, even if it will not be a perfect match to what I used
I really don't wanna seem like an asshole, but I had to mute the video and turn on subtitles. :D The tutorial itself was absolutely awesome though. Keep it up! Instantly subscribed.
Incredible effect my friend.. was that titanium white an oil base paint?? Never seen than before of so.. if it was, has to be completely dry first or are you taking advantage of it still being wet to achieve the effect?
I'm really curious, from start to finish, how long did this take you? EDIT: At the end of the video, you said it took an hour. That's really awesome for an hour's worth of work!
yeah, that's exactly what I was thinking about my skills when I started. Three years ago I painted like this - i.imgur.com/S26CnEv.jpg I think that with enough practice, patience and dedication to this hobby everyone can improve way more than they give themselves credid
You could, but due to their high pigmentation and the fact that they're very watery even straight from the bottle, it's much more difficult to judge proper dilution and transparency. I guess I'd have to thin my Scale75 inks like 20:1 at least to reach the proper transparency level
Honestly, I used Mournfang Brown because it was the closest for me to grab ;) I could do this effect with any medium brown paint, I always mix and match brands. As for Vallejo, well, Armor Brown is one of my all time favourite colours that has no close equivalents in other brands and I just like to use it as often as I can. I've already used it a couple of times on this paintjob on the cloth and gold parts (not on this mini but in previous one from the set) so using it also on the sword ties the paintjob together.
"Finished is better than perfect." That cut real close. Looking forward to trying this out on a sword I'm painting myself!
WOW!!!
il miglior edffetto di metallo fuso che abbia mai visto. Complimenti.
I'd love to use this for like a glowing muzzle on a redemptor dreadnought or terminator

Great video, the slag floating through the molten really sells the effect and is missing in a lot of molten effects. Excellent and easy to follow.
So amazing! You make it look so easy, but I appreciate how you described it so simply....now to do one of my own!
Try it :) of course it requires some practice and getting the dilution levels right, but in the end the technique is not that hard :)

how did you thin the paint ? water or did you use a thinner or lahmium medium or something of that sorts?
I thin all my paints with 20:1 mix of water and Liquitex Flow Improver.
Since you are working with glazes and make use of their transparency, would it make sense to use inks instead of paints?
You could, but due to their high pigmentation and the fact that they're very watery even straight from the bottle, it's much more difficult to judge proper dilution and transparency. I guess I'd have to thin my Scale75 inks like 20:1 at least to reach the proper transparency level
Also, they're very glossy which i just don't like, I'd have to use a matte varnish every couple of layers to properly judge the level of highlights
@@2brushes1cup Good points. Will give my Kimera set a go. They dry very matt, which seems to be helpful for this application.
May I ask what base you used for this model?
I prime all my models with Badger Stynylrez primers, in this case it was grey.
Why did you use Citadel and Vallejo in the end when all colors earlier were Scale 75?
