YES. Criminally underrated and still my favorite album full stop. So happy that I got to see the 15 yr anniversary show before the pandemic blew up over here.
I'm going to leave the same comment for Bryan, but I wanted to leave it here too. This album is for me, as close to perfect as an album can be. 10/10 the whole way through. The other stuff Thrice does is all great in its own way but there is something special about Vheissu. Grab yourself a copy and get lost in it.
The Alchemy Index is the 4 part CD set he was referring to. Each CD has a different music style based on that particular element. It's outstanding, as are they. They've been my favorite band since I was 16. I'm 37 now.
They have been my undisputed favorite for quite a while now. Their range is fantastic but their storytelling is what hooked me. For instance, they tell the story of Daedalus and Icarus from Greek mythology in 2 different songs years apart. Daedalus from the point of view of Daedalus (obviously) and Melting Point of Wax from the point of view of Icarus. Both powerful songs in their own right.
Awesome! Thank you for checking this out. The title For Miles is a reference to Miles Davis and a scale he used with 3 stacked major triads I believe. The piano part that was written utilized those stacked triads and sounded a bit like Fur Elise. So, they named it Fur Miles which finalized to For Miles. Unless my memory is off by quite a bit!
Only real Thrice fans search for reactions from people who have never listened to them to try to experience them for the first time again through others
Man I remember hearing Deadbolts for the first time. My friend gave me his ripped CD and i was playing it on a discman holding the headphones close over my ears. The one band i still enjoy and grown with over the past two decades..
For those who have not yet listened to thrice or have only listened to a few songs. Do not start with Vheissu. Start with Identity Crisis. And go album by album by album. It is a necessity to be able to experience the growth of this band because it is unique to all others.
thrice are my favourite band, vheissu is my favourite album of theirs; seeing you react to this song and what you had to say during it gave me a new found appreciation for it, thanks dude :-)
This is such a beautiful and powerful song. The elemental EPs you mention are The Alchemy Index, Vols 1-4. It's really cool stuff, that remains my favourite work by them so far, although they have a solid discography. They have matured into a more alternative, softer style, but still interesting. They are an amazing band with great lyrics too. Great analysis as always, Bryan!
This makes me happy that you found Thrice, been listening since 2003! They are honestly one of the most talented bands from that era of post rock. No album sounds the same, but every album you listen to works perfectly together.
Nice man. Thrice was my absolute favorite band for years starting in about 2001, so I'm still partial to their oldest stuff, but almost their entire discography is pretty mindblowingly great (imo). Based on your reaction to "For Miles," I'd also rec these songs: -Music Box -Beggars -Broken Lungs -The Abolition of Man -Words In the Water -Atlantic -All the World Is Mad -The Messenger For an introduction into the best of their oldest stuff, you could check out "Phoenix Ignition," "So Strange I Remember You," and "To Awake and Avenge the Dead." Cheers dude!
Loved the way you’re commenting about that there was unresolved tension right before the release of emotion in the song. That’s what I love about songs like this
Noooo I'm so sad that The Earth Will Shake didn't get picked, it's one of my favorite Thrice songs, but I'm glad you're doing some Thrice anyway! They're one of those bands where every album sounds completely different and that's one of my favorite things about them. I'm gonna push for them to be on the channel again at some point with either The Earth Will Shake or Paper Tigers (which is literally a metalcore song, it sounds so different from this!)
Of Dust and Nations and Earth Will Shake are usually the two "go to" songs on this album and it's easy to see why...but I always thought For Miles deserved more love. Really nice to see someone reacting to it.
Thrice are amazing. I know For Miles was partially inspired by Miles Davis. Dustin (the singer) tells the story in the liner notes of the deluxe version of the album.
As someone who has every album including the rarely found Better Days album, its great seeing people blow away but the tremendous musical knowledege and the raw power of Dustins voice.
You mentioned "Atmosphere" in the thumbnail so I had to give this one a try, haha. Gotta say, that's the best part of this song. The atmosphere and tension. The vocal o's that were going for a while just before the heavy part dropped really brought the tension and anxiety. I mean that in a good way, haha. The way the higher note carried way farther when you felt like it should go to the lower note, or even eventually to a higher note that never happens, but it carries on and lets off on an off beat and I love it so much... This song does what Neurosis does for me in a lot of cases, which is kinda like musical blue-balling, haha. They build you up with no payoff, sometimes just switching to a new concept and back again before you finally get something to release the tension. I'm into this for a lot of the same reasons I love Neurosis, but this sounds far different nonetheless. I dig it! I guess *this* is *your* Neurosis, haha.
Thrice is a band that evolves their sound in each album. Tappei's guitar composition proves that a rock song don't need to be filled with guitar solos to sounds great, abrasive to ears, above sublime.
Right after high school one of my best friends used to always try to get me into Thrice and I just couldn’t. I’d roll my eyes when I’d put them on and say dude it’s not going to happen. Sadly he died in a car accident a few years later. I ended up going to see Deftones play and Thrice opened for them. It was during the Vheissu tour and I remember being in amazement. Red Sky and Mustic Box are my biggest memories of that show. Literally from that day on they became my favorite band (next to Metallica of course). I highly highly recommend listening to everything from The Illusion of Safety up to their latest album. I’ve seen them more times than I can count and they’ve literally never disappointed.
Maybe my favorite Thrice song, but this doesn’t take away from their very very strong catalogue. Please check out more from them. The Earth Will Shake, Hold Fast Hope, In Exile, The Weight, Daedalus, Circles, Like Moths To Flames, Of Dust and Nations, The Window and many more.
The crowd participation when they play 'The Earth Will Shake' and get to the acapella part adds another level to me. Everyone stomps their feet in unison and sings "iron bars", call and response style. I get chills remembering it.
I've had Thrice's discog downloaded for a while but have yet to get around to it... after this I'm going to make them more of a priority. This was really great, though oddly I find it hard to put my finger on why. Ostensibly it's just alternative/indie rock with some post-hardcore elements, but everything is done so well. I especially love that tense middle section with the strings and the guitar, but it also leads so well to that really powerful climax. Good stuff.
I think that's the thing, it's just done so well. Doing everything just the right way at just the right time can certainly elevate something that is otherwise "just [genre]" into exceptionally pleasing.
I know this is an old comment but, what you described is pretty much thrice. They do what they want and it's hard to label a lot of it and it just works. Of course I'm incredibly bias haha.
This was me until I heard this album. Had their discog just sitting around, had listened to a couple of their older songs. When I finally heard stuff off of Vheissu it clicked, and they've been my favorite band ever since.
Followed you for a bit, loved t he between the buried and me reactions. But this Thrice one got me to subscribe. The Earth Will Shake is a quintessential song that probably has all the elementals of a Thrice song in one, but I'd love to see a reaction to Beyond The Pines by them.
I feel like Thrice isn't even music at this point. it's like a meditation, spiritual journey type of band lol. The Alchemy index scarred my life in a good way.
This song blew my socks off so hard the first time i heard it. I have a strong reccomendation that you listen to My Epic - Lower Still (i prefer the original)
This album is for me, as close to perfect as an album can be. 10/10 the whole way through. The other stuff Thrice does is all great in its own way but there is something special about Vheissu. Grab yourself a copy and get lost in it.
the heavy part of this song gives me the chills too. i think people dont think of it, but i think it might be the heaviest thing ive ever heard. heavier than firebreather etc..
I forgot how crushingly heavy this song gets at the end, during the screamed section. This is a great example of how some non-exclusively heavy bands can sound just as punishing as your more unerringly br007al bands. A band like Thrice or even Mogwai can crush your skull as ferociously and thoroughly as Slayer or Meshuggah. It’s just that the latter bands will bust down your front door to stomp you out, while the former will sorta Trojan Horse their way in.
dude if you dont know their music, you are really missing out. i think they they make the most well-written music out of any band ever. they are incredible. and its not just a few songs. they are ALL really damn good
Cool video. Identity crisis and illusion of safety albums were almost all I listened to back in high school. My musical tastes didn’t mature as there’s did but I came around and to this day I still think Dustin Kensrue is one of the greatest songwriters of all time. I’m a bit bias though being a Jesus loving punk rock musician. I saw them waaay back in the day opening up for face to face and they brought the house down. Had to be one of their fist tours if not first. Everyone in school the next Monday was a huge Thrice fan after that
The Audio Techinica M50x (Wired). I use for both listening and creating. It's known for having a really neutral sound which is great for mixing and creation. The Bluetooth variant is nice for the extra simplicity but it had a much heavier bass presence than the wired version. They would be good for people who really like bass in their listening but I wouldn't recommend them for mixing/creating.
@@CriticalReactions Nice. Have you ever looked at the dt1990 pro? I fell in love with the hd600/hd650 but the problem is that they are too laid back for extreme metal and the dt1990 seem to be a bit snappier, more aggressive. Any other ones you'd recommend besides the ones you use now?
Hey Bryan! Been watching for a while and really enjoying your content. I'm unsure how to request stuff, if it's here in the comments or adding stuff to the spreadsheet. So im going to request it here. If there is a right way to do this let me know. Anyway, i'd like to request some World's end girlfriend and their song Scorpius Circus ruclips.net/video/ccNtYBX0vyU/видео.html. One of my favorite artist. Their style is probably not for everyone, using a lot of glitchiness and effects and even noise from time to time, but at the same time i find it incredibly beautiful. But when you are doing more "experimental" stuff for a lack of a better word, i highly recommend them.
Thanks for the request. World's End Girlfriend sounded familiar so I checked the spreadsheet and it's been requested already (which is a good sign that I'll get around to it eventually) but there wasn't any specific songs requested. So I added Scorpius Circus!
Vheissu is a 10/10 perfect album
Masterpiece as well as Alchemy Index
YES. Criminally underrated and still my favorite album full stop. So happy that I got to see the 15 yr anniversary show before the pandemic blew up over here.
Agreed. The last show I went to before covid was them playing all of Vheissu in Seattle. What a night.
@@strummer33 I was there too! Amazing show and a life wish fulfilled to listen to my favorite album of all time in its entirety!
It’s in my top 3 albums of all time. Thrice is amazing, so damn underrated.
This was... TREMENDOUS! How have I been sleeping on them? If their other stuff is even close I'm in for a ride!!!
I'm going to leave the same comment for Bryan, but I wanted to leave it here too.

You have a ton of homework to do.
Thrice is so good. One of the greatest bands to come from the 2000s
They have been my undisputed favorite for quite a while now. Their range is fantastic but their storytelling is what hooked me. You got it! I was looking for this comment to see if someone else also has the liner notes from the CD.
I love how you said “there’s all this tension that is unresolved” haha and I knew what was coming… All these years and I still get goosebumps 4:48

Yes they are. They've jumped so many genres, philosophies, stories and sounds. They never miss.
Great comment. And they also confront the lyrics of John Lennon's Imagine with Lullaby...
Either Dustin or Teppei, or both, have said The Beatles are a big influence on them.
