Exactly. Oliver Stone came with Dr. Peter Kuznick, history prof at Princeton, to the Lobera Theater in Santa Barbara to discuss their great co-authored book, THE UNTOLD HISTORY OF THE UNITED STATES (later turned into a 10, and then 12-part video series). It too was very honest lively meeting of the mids. Oliver Stone sets the record straight by showing the other side of corporate power in the U.S. After all, the NSA (the National Security Administration) was established after the death of FDR, and its members consist of the Fortune 500, for the very reason they would insure there was never another FDR, a president of the people, vs president of corporations. THE HISTORY OF THE UNITED STATES tells this story, that Oliver Stone aptly refers to as "a continuation of Howard Zinn's great work, THE PEOPLE'S HISTORY OF THE UNITED STATES." Zinn's book and Stone/Kuznick's book are definitely worth reading. There is a struggle between ordinary men and the corporate autocracy

It's important directors like Oliver Stone are around to cast a critical eye on established Gov't story lines and to lend the proper "interpretative" treatment to significant global events that shape our present and future. Of course, the truth is always closer to the intersection of two or more opposing points of view, something only the most thorough and committed films makers aim for... and Oliver Stone has followed that prescription perfectly with his recounting of some of the most tragic and defining historical events in living memory. Snowden wouldn't have needed to sacrifice his way of life and become a whistle blower if the institution he worked for followed the law, also believed in their oath to defend/protect our constitution & one of its heads didn't lie to congress. If all our institutions did follow our laws, defend & protect our constitution, there would be less to blow a whistle on. There is nothing wrong w/whistle blowers, they're exposing wrongs. There should be nothing wrong w/exposing wrongs. If lone or institutional law/constitution violators new whistle blowers were protected and honored, they would be much less tempted to violate our laws & constitution & try to work w/in them or submit a request to change the law via proper channels, presenting their argument as to why this change is needed, fast track it if time sensitive. In a way, a whistle blower is a sleeper agent for defending our laws & constitution, the more the better.
You get the government you deserve. If you turn a blind eye to a lying self-serving government then you deserve that government. Obama, before politics, was very vocal about the need for whistle blowers and that it was a societies responsibility to protect the bravery it took to do so. Since he has been President he has only strengthened laws and punishment of whistle blowers. Obama also said he would get out of the Middle East, close Guantanamo Bay and claw back the wholesale stripping of citizen rights via mass surveillance and we know where that went. What did Americans do to punish him for lying, voted him in for a second term. You get the government you deserve.

A must watch for truth, is "The Untold History of the United States" by Oliver Stone. The best documentary I have ever seen, and should be the foundation for education of TRUE history!
I find noteworthy how many very intelligent people are raised believing the American mythology. A large fraction of the miseducated come from upper middle-class homes, raised by parents who themselves have had the benefits of US education. Ignorance of what was done as the American government extended its reach from the colonies that declared independence from Britain to the mid-Pacific and beyond is broad and for generations deep. Its breadth certainly included the poor and the more recent arrivals to the American scene. Only within a small fraction of the working class had the insights of 19th century European intellectuals opened their eyes to American class warfare and imperialism by the capitalist ruling class. Thus it is that we find that so many among those who became whistle-blowers were idealists, volunteers for Vietnam or members of the CIA and NSA, disillusioned but earnest patriots, rebels with a cause. They were truly victims of their upbringing and education.
I am a fan of all the speakers on your list and more even tho we find many of the"progressive" types have peramiters...example as much as Chomsky has done incredible work...early protester of the Vietnam war...but his gatekeeping narrative in September 11th is sketchy stating the manahattan attacks were not organized or preplanned to kick start the new enemy.."the terrorists"....and even as his friend Chris Hedges says about Chomsky...he is a west bank and gaza settlement defender...max Blumenthal is a phoney progressive along with Ben Norton and Aaron Matte...in my opinion many"progressives" have the backing of forces that are not so much spreading false narratives...but limited in the scope....if you read this and had not heard the antedote with greg and jeremy...try those 2... along with expose the enemy...2 great shows that work together on projects...such as the recent multi part series called the unauthorized history of the US....great reporting
So much of what Oliver says is desperately TRUE. They aren't listening, are incapable of comprehending and even the moderator, all miss the exact nature of the loss of their freedoms.
Yes and some do not want to believe it either like Ed risked his Life for FISA documents proof etc. and now years later some are just aware of the spying now as though it was not widely revealed a decade ago already?
Mr Snowden is an idealist. To perform an heroic act, I think idealism is often an essential ingredient of character. Many young people who are raised in military families are this sort. Other whistle-blowers have such family backgrounds. I doubt that anyone with a good background in American history would be idealistic. It is particularly a mistake of youth. His act of self-sacrifice was not honored by the American people. Our people are poorly educated and richly propagandized by corporate media. I think of the three, Assange, Manning, and Snowden who have challenged the imperial US state, Snowden has fared the best - living now in Russia with his wife in good circumstances. Julian Assange, a great hero who has not committed any criminal acts, suffers the most. Australia's governments have behaved disgracefully towards their honorable citizen and showed themselves to be cowardly in their subservience to US governments as has Sweden and the UK.
In Nuremberg, where Nazis were criminally prosecuted for war crimes, US prosecutors insisted that using " I acted according to prevailing laws, and following my orders" line of defense by the accused, be disallowed! Get my drift?
Totally agree. Not so intelligent to say the least and he keeps changing the course of Oliver statements. I hope he reads this that he is knuckle head.

I wish the interviewer would let Oliver Stone finish his thoughts. The interviewer is too full of his own "insights" and cuts off the more interesting thoughts before Oliver can complete them.
I knew even as a kid the government was always listening, watching. My life's not very exciting so I've never really cared. I respect Mr Stone and Snowden, but anyone surprised by what he revealed is niave.
Well it's been four years.....and now Google, RUclips and fb...along with others direct what you see, what you should believe and what to think...Read the book Hidden Persuasions. It's how advertisers encourage us to buy that which we made not desire too. This is the world in which we live.
@Tranequious Jones Uh it was a general comment not a directive, chill down. Hidden Persuasions is a book , not a movie, and I offered that up as suggestion for those bright enough and with desire to understand a bit more. Such as why soft drinks are at the back of a food store and not closer to the front. Why some products are on the middle shelf and others on the top. Why some use red vs maud for labels. Silly innocuous things which might amuse some readers.
I'm on a Oliver Stone interview marathon soaking it in like a person ought to when a wise elder speaks on serious matters. Not to imply he's that old, really.
yossarian1633 Just because someone is older does not mean they are wise i.e. Kissinger evil to the core. Fortunately Oliver Stone IS A MAN OF INTEGRITY. He is to listened to and admired. Stone has also been persecuted and misunderstood which is a travesty because this man truly is s good man with no agenda except the truth.
Age itself does not determine wisdom obviously, that's not what i was implying. But age does mean more experience, which can lead to wisdom. Especially when you've been through Vietnam like Stone has, and seen the effects of war first hand. That's what I mean. & young people should listen to their elders more often, honestly. That's a big part of what's wrong with modern western culture.
Oliver Stone should try to find and interview HARMON WILFRED. He calls himself a 'refugee' and has been for 20 years. His story is simply mind boggling!
What? No comments? June 14,2022. 'Snowden' was a good movie. Edward Snowden was, is a good person, and of quite the altruistic variety, too. I think in many people's hearts, they'd love to be a "Snowden" who would commit, to such a task as he did[as Steven Drake, William Binney, and others, also] and not for himself, not at all, and I suspect, his decision was agonising over just what the resulting damage to him personally, that would happen.
@@mmmgyrl1976 Congratulations, you just had a conversation with yourself. It's fine, but please don't involve me next time you decide to do it. I can just repeat what I said: people will remain loyal as long as they feel that their superiors share their ideals (when they feel that is no longer true, i.e. their superiors don't share their ideals, the crisis of loyalty will happen.) Where did you find anything about totalitarianism, or anything else you were talking about, is beyond me.
Very interesting discussion. It seems to boil down to if the constitution is the supreme law of the land or the NSA and CIA are exempt from it. Whistleblowers usually argue for separation of powers thru following the constitution and that power corrupts.
It's distasteful to me how Stone talks about adding "Drama" to this movie. He shares about being scared that the movie would not sell because of this. So he adds a sex scene between Lindsay and Ed. I, as a woman, could have done without it. I believe this story has captured the world. I'm sure millions are interested in Ed's story and how he has been treated by the US. Personally, I am very interested in this story as I feel for Ed as well as Julian Assange. It shows the lack of integrity and honesty that is missing in government and how journalists are treated for writing about things they feel are important . That is what is important in this movie. I am not interested in sex, car chases or shootouts.
By the way, I was giving my opinion as a woman. I find many movies today, especially when the director is a man, to have things in them that I don't like (and I am not in any way putting men directors down). However, if you look at a movie like, "It's a Wonderful Life", which I believe was directed by a man, it is very different. I don't think I have to be a director to give my opinion here on RUclips. Many people do. You don't have to be so mean to say that I'm Naive and for me to put my money where my mouth is. I like movies that have sensitivity in them. That's me and I believe I have every right to feel the way I do and to express myself.
Agree. The infiltrated business of film is also a club first and a business. The rules of the club no longer offer happy, bright, family films, straight historic remakes or dramatized documentaries without some level of propaganda and or unnecessary bathroom and sex scenes, drug use and strip club etc. You are dealing with a high level of perversion which thrives on corruption and desensitization. Research, Tavistock Institute. and then think sa t an ists.

1571JohannesKepler - Perhaps a small point but what a pleasure to read a simple, accurate and concise analysis of this clips problem. Their (Harvard's) A.V. club perhaps aught not be entrusted with this responsibility in future when the solution is so glaringly obvious - if someone with ears had been involved in testing the microphone when (oh who would have imagined ) the speaker's head "moved."
"The fear would be a president which would create a room full of Snowden's" what? Oliver didn't say that the interviewer inserted that himself, why is he saying Oliver said that. Is he confused or is he trying to control the conversation? Oliver said we desperately need whistle blowers.

Oliver is always interesting but this Ron guy is more interested in chiming in with goofy remarks & new questions while the guy is in the middle of sentences. Ron needed to be in on it more than just being an interviewer.
I watched with interest the discussion of the movie and its content. What I come away with is this. For all the good people in government who want our constitution to prevail there are a mountain of people who don’t care about whats right or whats wrong. It’s like using a hammer to chip away at Mt. Everest to remove it. Sadly in the end the mountain will remain till the of of time or in another term till our country will self destruct, from within.

You forgot John Pilger!
Thomas Sowell too!
Great list but many more can be added Glen Greenwald, Edward Snowden, Dr King and on and on. The truth is there
Oliver stone: brilliant, the moderator interrupts.
Painful to watch/hear. Stone was class, humble and gracious. Moderator needs to take a lesson and check his ego at the door.
Moderator is a total self obsessed dick
@Tranequious Jones lol...agree!
The interviewers competition with Mr. Stone for attention seriously affects the flow of information.
...effects...
Agreed. He talks too much.
I think he does a good job to moderate and contrast
What happened to JA?
Boy! Did we need Whistleblowers. Watching things like this in retrospect brings us so much irony..... Thanx for posting.
In Nuremberg, where Nazis were criminally prosecuted for war crimes, US prosecutors
insisted that using " I acted according to prevailing laws, and following my orders" line of defense by the accused, be disallowed! Get my drift?
Exactly!
Oliver Stone is a Great Man ! !
This gets on my nerves every time the host interrupt Stone. It feels like most of the time the host is talking, not Stone himself
I agree; As I commented, he can't hide his bias and jumps everything Stone says to counterpoint. You are so right, It is quite annoying.
Gatekeeping...
Totally agree. Not so intelligent to say the least and he keeps changing the course of Oliver statements. I hope he reads this that he is knuckle head.
@@ela111961 thanks for the chuckle. I painted the whole picture in my head, him (ham), at breakfast, over eggs benedict reading the AM paper (dates me?) Saying to himself: "You mean they didn't absolutely adore me??"
@@ela111961 Rude and unprofessional to invite someone to speak and then attempt to interject, interrupt and dominate.
*''Culture eats everything for breakfast.''*
What a profound statement . . .
Oliver is one of the more interesting intellects and keeper of the Good in the USA !
How long has Suskind the interrupter been in the C.I.A. ?
Not one person in that building with a baseball cap for this amazing man...I would walk out of that building and buy this man the first cap I could find.
It's OLIVER STONE for crying out loud.
very grateful for Untold History co authored with Peter Kuznick, and for Stone's other smelling salts, I mean movies+ commentaries.
Untold History of United Snakes sets a new paradigm congruent with Zinns Peoples History in Six Sigma quality.
I wish the interviewer would let Oliver Stone finish his thoughts. The interviewer is too full of his own "insights" and cuts off the more interesting thoughts before Oliver can complete them.
There is a definite art to conversation especially in forum interview context
@@danielj1063 Stone looks annoyed most of the time.
I knew even as a kid the government was always listening, watching. My life's not very exciting so I've never really cared. I respect Mr Stone and Snowden, but anyone surprised by what he revealed is niave.
Yes, but before you could call itconspiracy theory, but now there's proof.
He calls himself
a 'refugee' and has been for 20 years.
FREE SNOWDEN!!✌
I will subscribe and "like" your videos if your tech and production people get their acts together.
Thank you. I'll take that as a compliment.
And just look where we are in America today......
I wish I could hear them.
I'm representing myself now. I am solid.
But I love collaborating with others on the same level. I'm not above asking for help.
People will remain loyal as long as they feel that their superiors are loyal to the same ideal as they are.
@@mmmgyrl1976 Congratulations, you just had a conversation with yourself. It's fine, but please don't involve me next time you decide to do it. I can just repeat what I said: people will remain loyal as long as they feel that their superiors share their ideals (when they feel that is no longer true, i.e. their superiors don't share their ideals, the crisis of loyalty will happen.) Where did you find anything about totalitarianism, or anything else you were talking about, is beyond me.
i hope there will be a room full of snowdens.
Me too!
Nice video. It would be even better if we could hear what these two men are saying.
Very interesting discussion. It seems to boil down to if the constitution is the supreme law of the land or the NSA and CIA are exempt from it. Whistleblowers usually argue for separation of powers thru following the constitution and that power corrupts.
Oliver Stone is always the smartest person in the room. Definitely much smarter than this Pulitzer Prize winner.
It’s odd how Trump never mentions Snowden.
Please watch Oliver Stone's "Ukraine On Fire" (2016) Very eye-openng considering the events of today...
true
@Tranequious Jones Thank you. I'll take that as a compliment.
@Tranequious Jones I got it now.
Oliver is a movie maker, architect and artist.not hard to understand.. Other channels like Public PBS should do what you ask, pls ask them !
Brilliant man 🙏❤
at the 39 minute took over and answer the public questions ???? We want to hear Oliver !!!
WHy did the movie scenes got cut out ?
Fast forward to 2021. Last Americans leave Kabul (almost). How did the Intelligence community not miss how quickly Afghanistan would fall? Time for another movie.
Too bad the audio is so awful going from inaudible to unbearably loud... Had to turn the CC on 🙄
If we give up so easily the whole principles why this country was founded and DEGRADE into a totalitarian power, just because a bunch of terrorists blew up 2 towers then we do not deserve to be free. SNOWDEN - Respect, OLIVER STONE - Respect, PROFESOR SUSKIND - Respect.
The dramatic variations in the audio level make this video unwatchable!
It is strange because I am quite sensitive to this issue and I don't remember having any problem with this video...
Oliver's mic was on his right side of the jacket, so whenever he turns his head left, the audio level decreases.
mic check, mic check, mic awww forget it.
1571JohannesKepler - Perhaps a small point but what a pleasure to read a simple, accurate and concise analysis of this clips problem. Their (Harvard's) A.V. club perhaps aught not be entrusted with this responsibility in future when the solution is so glaringly obvious - if someone with ears had been involved in testing the microphone when (oh who would have imagined ) the speaker's head "moved."
its the sound variation thats impossible.
The interviewer is too arrogant. You aren't that smart buddy. Learn some humility.
No disrespect to Harvard but they need to fire the soundmnan
If you have integrity, nothing else matters! If you don't have integrity nothing else matters!
Who is that 3rd glass of water for?
"The fear would be a president which would create a room full of Snowden's" what? Oliver didn't say that the interviewer inserted that himself, why is he saying Oliver said that. Is he confused or is he trying to control the conversation? Oliver said we desperately need whistle blowers.
He was 69 here. Looks great and is sharp as a tac.
Ron Susskind is the main event. Oliver Stone is his supporting act/comical side-kick.🇦🇺
Good to know that there are still deep thinkers amongst us in this asylum of a modern world. If only they had influence with the ruling class.
Unfortunately the audio problem seems to come from the source the guys doing the audio in the auditorium which is really disappointing because, it’s Harvard FFS.
Freshmen students running the audio...hard on the ears through ear buds. Could not stay with it to the end.
One of the most essential teachings of philosophy: `Epistemology vs Ontology`. The world becomes the stories we tell each other. Yet ultimately, ontology blows the whistle once we go seriously astray...
Was excited about this one, but...couldn't watch long. It's Harvard for God's sake and you can't dim a light or get sufficient mics on the speakers. But the background noise was loud and clear. I thought you Harvard people were supposed to be smart!
The interviewer is talking too much. I didn't click to watch or listen to him talk on and on.
I agree I can't stand him he should be silent.
so much for harvard and the sound engineers , one directional cheap miss
could,t you really do better than this?
every time their heads moves to their right the audio is 50 % lower
HARVARD , my leg
Oliver for president
He would make a GREAT President !
this interviewer loves the sound of his own voice.
and is also a sleazy apologist for imperialism
Terrible audio placements with the mics
Check the sound!!
By any means necessary, By God, "Let freedom reign!"
Ron SUskind "a room full of Snowdens and the consequences of that" implicating that Oliver stated such, in fact he last comment before opening to discussion, Oliver stated the opposite. Ron Suskind a lawyer and his underlying colours showing through padded with his ability to mis truth Oliver Stone and leave an impression which was untrue
So what consequences did the people whose actions Snowden exposed face.
Nixon is his finest work
Much underrated
Oliver is always interesting but this Ron guy is more interested in chiming in with goofy remarks & new questions while the guy is in the middle of sentences. Ron needed to be in on it more than just being an interviewer.
The Bible say there should not be any secrets...
Cheney of course it never ends

I would like it if Oliver Stone could speak without continual interruption by Harvard Mouth.
typical Harvard Tool ~ i was born in Cambridge and lived there & they are a dime a dozen
I watched with interest the discussion of the movie and its content. What I come away with is this. For all the good people in government who want our constitution to prevail there are a mountain of people who don’t care about whats right or whats wrong. It’s like using a hammer to chip away at Mt. Everest to remove it. Sadly in the end the mountain will remain till the of of time or in another term till our country will self destruct, from within.
i think harvard needs to spend money on sound improvements
Stone speaks so well. Suskind seems like a real harvard puff job, though not so terrible
as he could have been.
That wasn't really necessary now, was it?
Good video :) I have seen it several days ago and I enjoyed it.
By the way, yesterday I saw that the IOP was doing a live session about the media and the elections, but I couldn't follow it. Are you going to upload it? Please respond :)
Yeah got say it's rough, bad mic placement.
The recording was impossible to hear.
