Great video. A friend gave me one of these a few weeks ago. Just waiting for my midi to USB to arrive so I Ican rock out on some Arturia machines or Reason. Mines in good nick but like yours missing the battery door.
This is PERFECT! I’ve been researching getting a keytar for the longest time now, and I’m really looking at getting either this own or the SHS-200. If I do get this one, I will definitely be keeping this video in mind for the effects shown :)
@@gearfacts I just purchased one, though, I’m not sure if it comes with a midi cable. From what I read, the Yamaha SHS 10 I supposed to used the 1/4” cable. But I’m not ti sure, because I am very new to the music community as a whole, so are there any other cables or materials I’ll need to help my instrument reach its full potential?
@@gearfacts You can also throw in a pedal board and your favorite amp and you can get some rather funky sounds (I wonder of there's a case for it much like the guitars).
One of my biggest criticisms of anything that has a music keyboard is where the hinge for the keys is located. It's even more important for devices that are meant to be a controller. I want to be able to press anywhere on a key and get the same result with the same amount of pressure.
@@gearfacts, even regular flat keyboards. I've even seen some full size where I couldn't even press a key down from the top edge because the hinge was directly below there. A good design on full size is a hinge that's about 3-4 inches behind where the back of the key is. Mini keyboards tend to make a compromise. But many don't, like the engineers that designed it never actually played.
I Bought an shs 10 new in Nashville back in 89. Still got it and still love it. The chicks dig it too when i bring it out on stage. Its so unusual to them. Yes i like to midi it to synths too.
My sister had one of these way back in 1999. I never knew it was meant to be played like that even with the shape of it. I remember a really freaky glitch happening when the batteries were low, the keys stopped working and the sound came from all the upper buttons instead!
I bought 2 of these in an old Woolworths, one for me and another for my brother. They are great midi controllers, a bit limited but fun. The built-in demo ' Last Christmas' by Wham.........well.... a little cheesey. Still boxed up, complete with even the straps! The poor man's Roland controller 😁
@@gearfacts Hi, No I have two! Both I think have the instructions and straps, even the protective sleeves and are back in the original boxes. I tend to look after my things 😂 Oh......and they are silver grey not red!! Always wanted the bigger, stereo? model but never got one. 😟
Great video!! Do you think this is a good instrument to get started with music? I've never played an instrument before (aside from the flute on school years ago) and the keytar just caught my eye but with the little money I've got this seems like my best option.
Ohhhh yes!!! X2 I'm a keytar lover but my budget isn't pretty high and I can't afford the Roland one. Anyways how it that jewel from the past feels? Amazing work as always. Ps: are you British? Due to your accent I mean
Hi Carlos, no I'm in Australia. At the end of this video there's alink to my review of the Alesis keytar which is quite affordable. Maybe that's an option :) #Gearfacts
@@gearfacts thanks Glynn I'm gonna take a look on your review and keep it that option in mind, I didn't notice about that cheaper option. Thanks again for your huge job who you are doing in your channel
Hmmm I found this thing on the classifieds for way less than what people pay for it on eBay. The only downside is they aren’t selling the iconic red one. Black is cool too right?
Anyone know what keys this uses? I have one with 2 keys missing. Wondered if any other old Yamaha home PSS mini keyboard could be plundered for spares. Great vid btw!
Ah yes I think that one came out after the Miku keytar in about 2017 right? I reviewed that one but it was quite limited in many ways, I think the SHS-500 is more flexible. Or I could be totally wrong. Maybe I should Google it so I know what I'm talking about! #Gearfacts

quite a few years ago, I had the SHS-10. It was my first keytar. It would've been really awesome if not for the fact that the keys were so flimsy. I was playin' it one day & one of the keys snapped in half. Then, it got stolen once when my house got broken into
for a second you showed the neck of a blue one. was that a SHS-10 thats been modded or a different model? everyone seems to think it only came in red black and grey/silver. =) edit: never mind I see what you did there. lol
i borrowed this keyboard. i think it's cool and it has insanely strong aliasing sounds (which is pretty funny) but i would never buy it for over 100 €. that's too much...
@@gearfacts You said "artifacts" in the video. As far as I know, aliasing noises come from the D/A converter, which was pretty bad on many cheaper FM synthesizers. I don't know whether the noises come from the sound generator or from the converter.
Ya know hhhhwhaaat? The keyboard is crappy, and yet brings in so much money for some crazy reason! I will say the beats are pretty good for 2 bar beats and indeed seem like those of the PSS480 but in full FM glory..no PCM samples here! I honestly prefer something else though lol! Such a toy this one is!

I agree, ergonomics is a major issue with keyboards in this physical position!

tem um site especifico de vendas desse Yamaha SHS-10?
Não, foi descontinuado :(
A Yamaha deixou de fabricar este modelo há 30 anos, só usado agora!
couple that with a pedal board and your favorite amp and your ready to rock on stage.
I’d get one if they were cheaper and less than $100, but it’s an awesome FM synth 🎹🤟

Get a midi to USB adapter. Cheap on ebay.
I'm here because I dont know what one I had in the 90's but those buttons look familiar.
