Frederik Rabe _really_ nailed the introduction. I finally was able play the song with the volume up high enough to hear that undertone of grit in his voice. Chef's kiss. The instrumentalists, too. I could go on and on and on about how well-done so many things are. And Henning May went IN. This is one of the very few (maybe even sole) instances where I actually like a cover of a song, let alone like said cover _more_ than the original (though Suzanne Vega is an incomparable artist whose original will also forever be immortalized as the benchmark for the MP3). Well done to all, and a huge thanks to Vega for letting AnnenMayKantereit x Giant Rooks take the wheel for their own spin!

I don’t know how y’all did… My wife and I have been singing this song at our restaurant since we heard it. It’s so weird seeing it blow up now like it has but great at the same time. We have gotten to being back an old song we are so familiar with and the younger folks go nuts over it. If this surprises you, you’d be blown away at the other stuff people ask for lol.

@@The_Major_LM That's not how octaves work. Two voices of different quality can sing in the same range and sound higher and lower because of their timbre.
Maybe I’m wrong, but it appears everyone is overlooking the musicians-essentially two different bands playing in two different rooms with the singers transitioning from one to the other flawlessly. The ability for everyone to stay so fluidly together is brilliant.

This is crazy-good. Both voices are just astonishing. What blows me away the most, though, is that English isn't their first language. You'd never know it. Such talent!
Not to be that guy, but their are subtle tells, like the way they say “counter” for example.

the first time i saw these guys was in 2014 at the musikschutzgebiet festival in homberg, germany. the whole crew of annenmaykantereit came to the campground with their instruments and started people calling over to a circle. they claimed that they are going to be on stage this evening on the festival but are not that well known, so they kinda tried to get people to their gig. i joined the session with a couple friends and we were blown away by these guys music and especially the singer.
now nine years later i am looking at this video with 92 million views. respect guys. vote this up so they can see this story, they'll probably remember this story.

What's crazy is they sing in English so well that you would never guess that they're German, in the interviews I've been able to find they can only jokingly say English phrases, and with a HEAVY accent
This just shows how much singers get away with mispronouncing words intentionally that we’re used to it. I mean listen to the halfway point. It’s not a dig at them, I think the mispronunciations actually sound fine here. We just never pay attention to these things. Can’t wait to get ratioed by the comment below me because people can’t handle having the music they like not be described at the utmost perfection.
@@lirich0This is actually a reasonably well known phenomenon iirc. When people sing in English they tend to take on a standard American accent. A good example of this is Adele and how much soul she sings with. Without knowing you'd probably assume she was from the USA. There's also a good example of this shown in a movie from the 1960s called "To Sir, With Love" it features Sidney Poitier as an African-American teacher who gets a position teaching to disadvantaged youths on the east end of London. Near the climax of the movie once the students begin to appreciate Poitier a white female student sings him a song as a goodbye, and I believe at the time audiences (especially black audiences) thought they dubbed her song over with a black singer due the the shear amount of soul and the perfect American accent she sung with. It's honestly a fantastic movie that you should watch if even just for the banger of a song near the end it touches on a lot of social issues we still deal with in a manner palettable to even '60s audiences.

I suggest you check out their bands catalogue, AMK has great tunes like ausgehen, tommi, orangefield and pocahontas. Henning May the second singer likes writing songs in his native German. I've also read he doesn't want to become so famous he can't go to a football game casually.
