Check the description for a link to the TELESIN chin mount. Also hit me with any questions you might have about mounting the GoPro on the chin. Personally, I have found this to be the best solution for how I go about filming my rides!
Thank you for your Sugru video. Did that to my helmet chin mount and i’ve been using it for almost 2 years now and it still works and still holding up. Good job!
Right on! Glad to help. I think some people imagine riding with a DH type full-face and haven't tried something like the Proframe. I mean, they're never gonna be as comfortable as an open face, but yeah...I have had enough face smashes to warrant full-time full-face.
Fun fact. By mounting the camera on your chin, when you lean your head into corners (this happens naturally) the camera moves in the opposite direction. This makes the viewers head tilt in the required direction minimising video sickness. Also I’m now checking out the glue. That other mount is a bit :/
I find that the HERO7 and HERO8 actually back processes the footy and leads movements like that. Either way, the footy definitely feels more natural and not so seasickness inducing. Yeah Sugru is pretty cool. Useful for a lot of things. I might use it add bumps to reduce chain noise.
I started with a Telesin mount on my Stage helmet. The black plastic cracked and broke pretty quickly. I taped it together to try to salvage it... But ended up doing the Sugru mount like 10 months ago. It's survived many faceplants & OTBs at the bike park & racing. Thanks for the idea Alan, it's solid AF.
Hey Alan, I followed your lead with the sugru several months ago and love the angle. I've got on a full face with detachable chin bar & I have a spare chin bar from an old same helmet that I headbutted a rock with (chin bar wasn't on) but have never gone to that option. I also bought the Telesin for my other full face but still haven't used it as the sugru one is perfect. I agree with what you say re go pro mounts under the visor & on top 100%. On the rare occasion I ride without a full face but want to film then the chesty makes an appearance. Glad you are back in the saddle & ❤️️the channel 🤘🇦🇺
Yukonpeteneff I can’t speak for DM MTB, but the Sugru will mold easily onto any shape and most surfaces. I’ve seen it work on a branch. So it should work on any helmet. 👍🏽
hey guys. ima just point something out. when making a product sometimes we invest in something called a weak link. a part that is meant to break to protect more expensive parts. if your chin mounts break it may protect your camera or helmet from permanent damage. if you where to put a bolt through your helmet and screw on a tripod adapter on it and then that snapped off your helmet would probably break on the chin bar or screw up your camera
I have a telesin mount and so far there have been no problems with it. The plastic will most likely never poke you and the buckles move and are flat so they won't do much damage. Just make sure the blue rubber matches your helmet.
I actually found 3d printed mounts made for my specific helmet, they still require a ziptie, I could sugru them on but the 3d plastic could break and leave me with a stump impossible to remove.
Hey Alan, I’m wondering if you’re ever concerned about the extra leverage produced by having the camera mounted there? It would seem that if you were to crash face first (which I seem to do also 🤦🏻♂️) the chin mount could produce a significant increase in rotational leverage on your head. Have you found that to be the case or not? I’ve always just used a chesty since my videos are 99.8% for my own personal consumption. But definitely like the POV created with the chin mount. Thanks, stay safe and shred on 🤘🏽🤘🏽
Thanks for the questions. I think the crash examples in this vid are good examples of the kinna crashes you’re talking about. The weight isn’t enough to make a difference in regards to rotational forces. And the mount, as shown with the hammer test, is gonna break before it’ll transfer that much force into the helmet. Hope that clarifies. 👊🏽
I used your method and got a mount and bought the sugru at target. I installed it and it looks clean!! Also I used 2 packs of sugru to cover it good and make it look clean
I love your mount setup. Films well and looks clean. I’m wondering if the gopro screw could be shorteny if you used a stand screw and use a tool to tighten? Not sure how much you adjust on the trail. Then again if it aint broke. How freaky was it to take that hammer to the helmet?
Thanks Andy! I actually do use a driver to tighten it up a bit...but partly because my hand is still weak. Ha! I wasn’t worried about the hammer. It was my old helmet. 😉
I got that same telesin mount but it never worked out for me. I’m using the gopro helmet mount for the chin bar and it’s working out pretty well. I can send you some pics on IG if you wanna check it out. Great vid! It’s good to see a follow up on your sculpting skills haha
I'll stick with the Sugru option. After watching your original video of how to do it, I haven't looked back. I put mine on a Bell Super R3 with a removable chin mount, so when I am done filming for the day - it all just comes off 😄🤘
It's amazing to see how much room the bike takes up when a ride is filmed at chest level. The chin mount seems to be the way to go. You still get some good views of your bike, but the viewers are actually able to focus on what you are doing, not how nice your bike looks. You might be on to something here Alan.
Right on! That’s precisely how I feel about it. And because of natural body positioning, you see the bars more when it’s steep or gnarly or flowy, and you see the bars less when there’s not much going on.
Thanks for the great info Alan! I am also coming from a Gimbal + Gopro5 setup to the new GoPro Hero 8 Black. I am trying to decide on the chest mount vs the chin mount. You are really selling me on the chin mount. I just took a trip out to Palm Canyon with the new GoPro 8 + Chest Mount and was a little bummed that I lost some footage because the camera was pointing downward. I find it hard to line up after using the gimbal setup for a few years. What kind of angle do you have on the chin mount? Is the camera facing forward or upward a bit? Thanks so much for the help & info! :D
Yeah getting the angle with the chest mount is tricky. On the chin, it’s about straight forward. But really it’s about doing quick runs to test and adjust and then using a sharpie or a blade to make a mark across the mount “fingers”. Hope that helps.
Very helpful video. I just got my proframe and thinking how am I going to stick my gopro. I also looked into that telesin mount but same thing with your concern. I will try that Sugru this week just waiting for my order to arrive. Thanks man.
Right on. Do make sure you follow Sugru's instructions and wait 48 hours. I only say this because I've had a couple people tell me it doesn't work after they did stuff wrong. 😆
Nice follow up on your original sugru vid Alan. I just tried using one of those clip mounts (clips onto your camelbak) and the footage was garbage, although that may have been attributed to my riding. I may have to try and find some sugru and follow your method. Keep up the good work champion
Yeah, getting good footy always takes some initial experimentation. I’ve found Sugru at Target, and I’d bet you’d find it at an arts and crafts store too.
Yarrr! Outsider take it personally when you talk smack on his personal camera POV! It like you walk up to him and pee in face! Alan hurt Outsider feelings! Outsider wish he never help Alan with camera video! To be continues!
Do you have any experience with removable chin bar helmets and GoPro mounts like the way your doing it. Really good video I would rather not wear my GoPro bra while filming but don’t want to buy two helmets or wear full face on a trail ride in the heat . Thanks
I don’t but using Sugru or the Telesin to attach the mount to the chinbar that is detachable shouldn’t be very different. I know another person commented that they successfully used Sugru in their detachable one.
This was super helpful. You have me rethinking how I capture my footage. The GoPro "bra" is just adding to my heat so I may try this out. Also, now I can't unsee the Teletubby mount. 😧
Hey man, Ive got my proframe set up like yours i think I have teh tripod mount invesred on the chin bar tho. Either way its super secrue and looks great with teh sugru. I havent gotten out for a ride yet but sat on the bike with the helmet on to get an idea of the angle. The camera touches my chest here and there depending on my position. does this happen to you too? does it screw up the angle or video at all? any tips?
Nice! I haven’t had it got my chest. You may have the angle too low but you’ll figure that out once you get on the bike. You can also do a quick test just rolling down the road of course. 👍🏾
I did it to my helmet. Only did one layer. Did it last night around 6PM and tried to pull it off this morning and it came off....Should I do two layers and let it sit for a whole 24 hours?
Funny. I was just talking with a buddy about the weight. I don’t actually feel the weight other than the helmet feeling more settled onto my noggin. It’s not like having it mounted under the peak or on top. Hope that helps.
Awesome boss! I got the TLD helmet which comes to a point at the chin. ☹I used a 4 inch wide e tape on the chin and apoxy molded a gopro mount to it. When it dried I pulled it off, sanded and painted it. Then I used the double stick grey 3m to adhere it to the helmet! Looks sweet! It took a few hits and it's still there! And if I need to remove it all I gotta use is a heat gun. Gonna go hammer it 🤣
Yup! Set it up on every helmet I've gotten. Currently using it on my Smith helmet up at Snow Summit. Ha! Just smacked it into the dirt, and it was all good. ruclips.net/video/cMtnr7ce3nA/видео.html

You can sand your chin bar with course grit and paper to allow the SuGru to grab harder
Thank you for your Sugru video. Did that to my helmet chin mount and i’ve been using it for almost 2 years now and it still works and still holding up. Good job!

Sugru for the win!
Yew! Have you tried it yet? 👀
I'm still on the zip ties atm. I'll have to find some sugru

Great info Alan! I was worried about you might brake your helmet when you hit the chin mount😂
Thanks Yuka! And I like that you were worried. I used an old helmet for the hammer shot. 😉
Fun fact. By mounting the camera on your chin, when you lean your head into corners (this happens naturally) the camera moves in the opposite direction. This makes the viewers head tilt in the required direction minimising video sickness. Also I’m now checking out the glue. That other mount is a bit :/

Which helmet with the detachable chin bar did you set up on? Thinking of buying a Super Air R. Do you think it would work on that helmet?

@@mtb_alan agreed 👍
Thank you for the idea. I ordered everything to do your style of mount on my daughter's new helmet. We are going to Sedona. Maybe I'll see you there.

Boom! Well said. Also you don't want your teeth or face bones to be the weak link either. 😆

Fun vid dude. Once my gimbals break I’ll be using your method.
Thanks man!
I actually found 3d printed mounts made for my specific helmet, they still require a ziptie, I could sugru them on but the 3d plastic could break and leave me with a stump impossible to remove.
Just make sure you smooth off the pointy bits of the zip ties and point them away from your face.

I really like this camera angle it is just the main problem with it is I don't have and don't like wearing a full-face helmet. Great Video!
Fair enough. Thanks!

Can you make a video on how to mount a GoPro to your chin?
