"In his eagerness to save you, your God has also saved the Roman fleet"... I love that line. I have paraphrased it many times in my life.. I flew Huey helicopters in Vietnam.. In my 11th month of service, I was coming out of a jungle hover hole with 6 troops.. We made it to the tops of the trees and my engine failed.. We autorotated down thru the trees for a very HARD impact with the jungle floor. I got it in flat and we didn't burn.. Everyone survived but there were some broken bones.. Another powerful scene from William Wyler's Ben-Hur released in 1959. It deserves its eleven Academy Awards (or Oscars). Jack Hawkins is excellent. Charlton Heston is legendary. A masterpiece epic movie.
I did not know this until recently, but Ben Hur was written by Lew Wallace, a Civil War General who was a Corps Commander at some famous battles like the battle of Shilo.....Surely his philosophy of life and spirituality was shaped and informed by that great struggle...much like Juddah Ben Hurs struggles.
He was also the governor of New Mexico territory when Billy the Kid was raising Cain and later he was minister to the Ottoman Empire. Quite an accomplished man.
I like this scene, shot in the water tank on the backlot at MGM with a very large painted backdrop of the sky and a forced perspective horizon at the far edge of the tank, the actors are probably about 50 feet from the horizon, it works really well, old fashioned film making at its best.
That subtle gesture of the soldiers looking at each other in confusion when Quintus Arius hands over the cup of water to Judah... makes me chuckle. This movie is awesome.
If the movie was only about this one part it would still be powerful. Arrius, for all he achieved was a man without faith or hope, ready to just lay down and die while a mere slave stayed true to himself and his faith. When Judah Saved him he wouldnt let him take his own life or grant him death, not out of any kind of loyalty, but because he didn't share his belief that his life was worth throwing away and in the end he was right.
I just looked this up. They spent, in 1958 when production started, 15 million to make this, which is easily 150 million, probably more, today. It grossed 150 million, the second highest grossing film after Gone With the Wind for may years. Heck, 150 million is not bad money for a film to gross even today. The cost obviously the elaborate sets and battle scenes, filmed of course completely without computer graphics. They films sea battles in giant water tanks.
I must have seen about ten thousand movies! From " City Lights" to "The empire strikes back"! From "Wizard of Oz" to "Predator"! From "Gone with the Wind" to "Platoon"! And so on! But no movie can ever beat "Ben Hur"! Not in a 1000 years!
I love the way the slave Judah verbally repeats the Roman Generals words back at him on the raft. Almost like the slave Judah is mocking the Roman with the Romans own words.

Ships water was presumably stored in barrels deep in the ship for ballast. After a few days green gunk would form on the surface especially in warmer weather. Sailors would take water from lower down and sift it through their teeth. It must have caused upset stomachs at the very least.
