    When you say you've read the books... do you just mean the first book? Because Paul is not what you seem to think he is - he was right to fear his destiny. And the Bene Gesserit have many other options and plans - they're far from done.
    Herbert wrote the series to make the point to beware of charismatic leaders - they should come with a health warning.

    Really good review. Apparently people weren't understanding that he was critiquing the chosen one narrative in the first book and he wrote messiah to nail in the message. I think that was the reason they added Chanis skepticism of Paul to make this clearer to the audience.

    The Fremen do fight the Sardaukar in the final battle. They are the troops that get the brunt of the sandworms bearing attacking Fremen. Sardaukar also guard the Emperor’s entourage inside, before Paul orders that the Sardaukar are killed and the Emperor, Princess Irulan, and the rest are taken prisoner.
    Meanwhile, as planned, Gurney leads the attack on the Harkonnen in Arrakeen. Leading to the thankfully swift and unceremonious termination of the bully villain Rabban at the blade of Gurney…

    • @raymonds8354
      @raymonds8354 6 месяцев назад +1

      There has been some criticism that the Gurney-Rabban “fight” was too brief for such a “big moment”. I believe that this animal-like the Baron-did not deserve to go out like a boss. He just needed to be taken out like trash. And also, a prolonged duel would have been redundant before the Feyd-Paul knife fight. In which Feyd foolishly “played with his food” as he did in the previous fight in the arena against the Atreides prisoner-leading to his much deserved death at the blade of Paul…

    "Chani is part of the prophecy and literally saves his life"
    I don't think that's it.
    Yes there is a prophecy about "desert spring tears" (added in the movie), but I assume that's all it is, a prophecy.
    What saves Paul, as in the book, is giving him another drop of the spice essence.
    Basically, he survives the ritual internally, but he gets trapped inside. Sensing the spice essence (a huge threat that his body had already dealt with) from the outside, snaps him back out of it. The tear being added is functionally irrelevant.
    With that, it makes sense why Chani is justified in being upset with Jessica and telling her to "fix it herself", as Jessica could literally just do it herself
    (the difference from the book here is that in the book Jessica genuinely didn't know what Paul did and how to save him, whereas in the movie she is instrumental in making him do the ritual),
    but Jessica is trying to take advantage of the "desert spring tears" prophecy, to make Paul's revival feel more mythical and prophetic to the Fremen.

    What I appreciated in this movie was, yes, there was epic action all throughout, but also alot of breathing room for character development for Paul, Chani, Jessica, and Stilgar. It also gave alot of time to building Pauls relationship with the Fremen which i thought was great. It made the film feel almost episodic in its structure and while i get why some people had issues with the pacing, it worked perfect for me. I felt like every scene served the story and not a moment was wasted.
    The art direction, music, cinematography, and costume design, made for some of the most gorgeous sci fi visuals ive ever experienced. Accompanied by a complex story that challenges audiences and some amazing lore, this movie was a masterpiece for me. 10/10

      I like that the action scenes were economical and not overlong, including the final battle. They lasted long enough to accomplish their purpose, and this also helped save budget that would have gone to additional special effects and choreography work.
      As you said, this allows the other scenes-involving politics, religion, romance, culture, history, and more-to breathe…

    Hope there’s a part 1 & 2 marathon before the next movie. Totally agree … One of the most exhilarating experiences I’ve had at the cinema in a long time. And looking at various behind the scenes clips and the art and soul of dune photo books I don’t have to wonder why - they had the right man at the helm and the right team to realise the ideas

    I'm fast becoming a fan of this channel. I discovered you guys because of this Dune 2 review. It's great that the conversation is engaging. An hour-long but I didn't feel bored. I like how you are knowledgeable about the story because you've read the books too. And still able to appreciate the movie. Many reviewers who are book readers often complained about this adaptation. If they didn't like this - which I consider as one of the pinnacle of movie-making, then there's no making them happy. I also appreciate you guys not spoiling what happens beyond book 1. I got spoiled what will happen to Chani. And I was bummed. That was not even in the movie yet.
    Also, side note: I think Kade looked like a handsome version of Heath Ledger.
    Now I'm gonna check your past reviews.

    DV made changes to Chani, so she's bringing diversity in though into Freman (North vs South), and young North crowd* displaying more secular ideas but also makes her the audience surrogate PoV. That's probably why she's not revealed to be Chani Kynes, Liet Kynes's (planetary ecologist) daughter. She needs to be 100% Fremen.

      Regarding the Feyd-Paul duel: Paul taking the knife to his right shoulder for a non-lethal wound from Feyd is genius! Allowing Paul to pull out his own knife from his left ribs (that had earlier been diverted there by Feyd) to stab the cruel bully Feyd to death.
      Thus scene must be watched closely. Online it has been wrongly called a continuity error that Paul is stabbed in the left ribs and later pulls a knife out of his right shoulder. They are, however, two different knives-Paul’s and Feyd’s, respectively. One must notice that Paul has no weapon in either hand after getting stabbed in the left side. And notice when he pulls out Feyd’s knife from the right shoulder, he drops that weapon to the floor, and then approaches the Emperor with his own knife in his right hand…

    Those who have read the books understand that, in the film, Paul "sees" a LOT more than he lets on.
    Even in the books (where Frank Herbert's own idea of where the series was going evolved over time), you see that Paul is constantly struggling with his visions, worrying about frequent blind spots he's discovering and trying to figure out how to limit the damage of what he's unleashed (or at least gotten caught up in...)
    Spoiler alert: billions of deaths in a jihad are FAR from the worst of it!

  • @donny1960
    @donny1960 6 месяцев назад

    1st of all. The whole timeline in the book of Dune from first page to last, takes place in a 3 year period. Paul is 15 at beginning of the book. So is 17 or 18 by the end. Alia was not a HUGE part of the book. She has a few scenes. And yes, she plays a role. Mostly to point out that she is different. Alia does have a greater purpose at the end. During the battle. Herbert was great at setting things up. Alia is presented as a character to show compassion for. She knew she was strange and the reader wants to comfort her... like Hanna does. But again, that is to set up the grown Alia and how we relate to her destiny. How the movie handles all this is a good compromise. Trying to find a 3 year old actress that can play these powers and emotions was made moot by how they presented Alia. Your discussion of the movie and book was beyond great. Dune is complicate, dense and profound. But it is also fun and entertaining. You guys all made that clear in your discussion. Thanks.

      That's the point. Iirc in the book he's described to look like "an old, caged lion". He's lost and confused, broken by the Bene Gesserit schemes. Feeling the power slowly slipping through his fingers, but not fully understanding why. But you can still see the glimpses of what a terrifying and powerful man he once was, like in the scene where he's talking to the Baron.
      I went into the movie expecting not to like the performance and thinking that Walker was a miscast, but honestly he did a very good job of conveying these subtle emotions.

Maybe it's just subjective, but I thought she was excellent and written much better than Chani in the book. Javier Bardem stole the show for me tho and it's easily his best role since No Country for Old Men imo
