Catholic Public High School, commonly known as Sangota Public School, is a private Catholic primary and secondary school for girls located in swat Sangota, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. It was established in 1962 under the direction of the Diocese of Islamabad-Rawalpindi and gained a reputation for providing quality education in the entire Malakand region. The majority of the teachers at the school were Irish Sisters of the Presentation, who dedicated themselves to educating children in Swat.
Initially, Sangota Public School had a co-education system, admitting both boys and girls until the 1990s. However, with the establishment of Excelsior College, the boys were shifted there, and the school became exclusively for girls.
Unfortunately, the school faced significant challenges in recent years. Between 2009 and 2012, it was forced to close due to threats of fundamentalist Islamic suicide attacks and damage caused by bombings. The region experienced a rise in intolerance and the spread of Islamic fundamentalist groups, resulting in attacks on numerous schools, including Sangota Public School.
The history of Sangota Public School dates back to its establishment in 1965 by Miangul Abdul Haq Jahanzeb, also known as Wali Sahib, the last ruler of the Swat state. Wali Sahib not only donated the land for the school but also provided generous financial aid for its construction and operations. The school's majestic building was situated in a beautiful location on the left bank of the Swat River, symbolizing its commitment to spreading education in the region.
The Sisters who served as teachers in the school were dedicated to educating young girls in nearby villages and hamlets, without seeking personal financial gains. They taught the same curriculum to the girls in the morning as they did to the girls attending the school.
The school faced temporary closure on September 10, 2007, after receiving a letter threatening suicide attacks if the Sisters did not close the "factory of Christians." The letter, sent by a group called Jan Nisaran-e-Islam (Sacrificers of Islam), was published in local newspapers on September 9. However, the school reopened on September 17 after receiving assurances of protection from the Swat district coordination officer.
In June 2009, the school was destroyed by raiders, as reported by the Pakistani Bishops National Commission for Justice and Peace. Attackers targeted the girls' boarding school, which was run by the Sisters, using explosives that demolished the building. Fortunately, there were no casualties, as the Sisters had preemptively closed the school as a precaution. The school catered to nearly 1,000 students, primarily from poor Christian and Muslim families.
These attacks on schools in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, including Sangota Public School, highlight the rising intolerance and the efforts of Islamic fundamentalist groups to undermine the work of Christian educational institutions in the area.
