  • This video explores Conservative views on Human nature going through from Hobbes' rather bleak view a 'nasty, brutish and short' life if human nature is left uncontrolled through Burke the Oakeshott's One Nation view and finally the views of the New Right. Part of my Political Ideas series designed for A Level Politics (EDEXCEL)

Hi Alan. Great primer on conservative views about human nature. But I've always wondered something: could someone with a Hobbesian view of human nature nevertheless be a socialist? Or would this make little sense?

Hi Alan, how would you recommend to revise conservatism and socialism. I was thinking to plan essays but it feels pointless due to the massive variety of questions they can ask.

Base it around the key elements- human nature, society, state and economy. Make sure you know how each of the different strands feel about each one support this with examples from the key thinkers. This then covers narrow questions on any of the key elements and broader ones about levels of agreement and disagreement between strands. Also pay close attention to the specification qualifications.pearson.com/content/dam/pdf/A%20Level/Politics/2017/Specification%20and%20sample%20assessments/A-level-Politics-Specification.pdf
Looking at the subject content and glossary which has key definitions (these words are likely to appear in questions).

Hi Alan, I’m doing some practice questions on conservatism every now and then. One question i found is ‘to what extent do conservatives agree on human nature?’
Can i say that one nation and traditional conservatives agree on their pessimistic views on human nature, believing humans to be flawed and imperfect. Then as a counterpoint, can i say neo liberals have more of a focus on atomistic individualism, and believe humans are self sufficient and self reliant creatures.
    Would that be ok?
