    As a general reply cos multiple people mentioned "piu" - like i said its not technically wrong but most hk people will say "fei" instead. I've seen Lucas do this on multiple occasions, where he speaks in a more "formal/written" way or use word choice you'd commonly only use when speaking mandarin. Its difficult constantly switching between two languages so it's understandable why he gets confused!

    • @Iris-bj5bd
      @Iris-bj5bd 4 года назад +176

      @@tracy_5577 It actually depends on where one's family is from. Due to historical reasons, the majority of Hong Kong people are immigrants from Mainland China. These people are from different backgrounds. There are Shanghainese, Hokkien, Teochew, Hakka, and Cantonese. Likewise, the people of Guangdong are made up of three major groups, the Cantonese, the Teochew, and the Hakka, so even though these people have Cantonese as their mother tongue, they are still more or less influenced by the accent of the older generation in their family.
      Lucas's paternal grandmother is Teochew. Xiaojun's paternal grandmother is Hakka. Also, Xiaojun is from Dongguan and sometimes he pronounces certain words with a Dongguan accent. Hendery is from a Wing Chun Kung Fu family and he grew up in Foshan, so I guess he is from a family of Cantonese origin. This explains why all three members are fluent in Cantonese, but there are very subtle differences in their accents. Out of all three members, Hendery's accent is the closest to the Canton (aka Guangzhou) accent and he's also the most articulate.

  • @coolgirl312
    @coolgirl312 4 года назад +938

    Lucas, Hendery, and XiaoJun definitely speak Cantonese when they're together. You can always here them speaking in the background in Cantonese. Its actually cute that YangYang seems to be picking it up just by hanging around them. And I think Lucas just gets all jumbled up because he's all over the place with the languages; Mandarin when promoting with WayV and then Korean and English with Super M, he always seems to need a moment the "settled" with whichever language he's suppose to be speaking in. Its times like this where I wished my Dad would've taught me Cantonese so I can understand them better xD

    • @a7xmaNga
      @a7xmaNga 3 года назад +18

      I replied a comment similar to yours about Lucas stumbling/his words getting jumbled, and said that i think it's about the speed of processing ideas/words and articulating them match or not match. I mean i am either fluent or semi fluent in 5 different languages including my mother tongue, but still i stumble, butcher my sentences or forget words even when i am speaking my mother language. Though i think it's not because Lucas and I are not fluent, but is because our brains (at least myself) work very quick on the go but the process of speaking out loud/articulating gets jumbled because of not being able to switch as quickly as needed between languages. Just today i had to stop and try to remember the equivalent of the word Genius in my mother language Turkish, to be able to translate something to my mom.

      it's really hard to pick one language when he knows so many. lucas speaks 3-4 languages(3-4 because i'm not sure if cantonese and mandarin are considered languages, they're topolects and have different rules). he's at least decently fluent in all of them, and since cantonese is his mother tongue, i'd guess lucas thinks mainly in cantonese but switches to mandarin, korean and english sometimes. that's why sometimes when he's speaking he slips up a little cantonese. my dad is similar to lucas, and thinks in mandarin, english and cantonese, and sometimes he struggles a little when he's talking lol

      omg though i speak both and I've always thought canto was such a crass language 😂 just because it's so slang-y in every day use and in mando we speak it how we write it, so it's just more polite in general... it's funny how different people hear differently though!

    the thing about cantonese used nowadays is that it's informal and quite casual. mandarin is spoken with the same structure and vocabulary as formal cantonese, and informal cantonese uses words with slightly different contexts than mandarin, so sometimes cantonese speakers who speak a lot of both cantonese and mandarin may be a little unsure of when to use formal cantonese or not

  • @sintura
    @sintura 3 года назад +1

    lucas' accent somehow doesn't sound very local to me but hendery def sounds like he walked outta macau/hk. and xiaojun u can tell he's not from hk or macau or southeast asia, and sounds like he's from mainland/guangdong

    I have a friend who live in Taiwan but speak Canto like he is born in Hong Kong. And he is a born Malaysian Chinese so he speak Mandarin and Malay fluently. I don't even know what is his main language anymore.😂 I asked him before, what language was he thinking with and he said he was confused most of the time.😂 Another question that I asked him made me feel like an idiot was if he dream in Chinese and he said 'I dream about your language.'😆 well, my language is very different from Malay so I was weirded out by that.😂

    The problem for Lucas Hendery and Xiaojun is the written text Xiaojun Simplified Chinese Cantonese PRC while Lucas and Hendery use Traditional Chinese text for Cantonese HKG and Macau. In the case of Lucas and Hendery Yangyang can simply reply to them in Tradtional Chinese Taiwan-spoken mandarin while the latter two use Traditional Chinese Cantonese. To make it easy on NCT Mainland China Taiwan and Hong Kong Line they should be using Traditional Chinese Taiwan text just like how Lucas's local airline Cathay Pacific simply uses Traditional Chinese Taiwan on their website and Aeroplanes.
