Take notice of something very subtle but with a huge effect that James is doing. As soon as he walks in an office; if he is met with a welcome greeting, he reciprocates and states his business. However, if the government employee comes at him sideways or snippy, he will say that he doesn't need help at the moment, he is just documenting but he will ask for help when he is ready. This sets the stage for the entire interaction.
The biggest problem seems to be, besides the public employees not knowing the 1st amendment, they do not know or understand FOIA law. At that point, for the interaction to go well, the public employees must be open to education. This is another fine example of how James is playing chess and they are playing checkers. If the only way to educate public employees is one at a time, then that's what James will do.
Great work, TTA! Keep standing up for our rights. 👍

He needs to TEACH every Deputy in the Sheriff's Office all about First, Second, Fourth and Fifth Amendment RIGHTS that everyone absolutely HAS to do certain things and USE their rights if they so desire. As the saying goes, "Knowledge is power", well then, if members of law enforcement and their departments WANT respect, THEY need to START by earning that respect, i.e. by KNOWING the laws, the Constitution, high federal court rulings on people's PROTECTED RIGHTS and how to DE-ESCALATE (all of that IS their JOB).

I like how you agree with them and then tell them what you are going to do. Very calm, cool, and professional - no reason to get upset with people that don’t know how to do their jobs. One would hope they would want to know and go to inservice training regularly - too bad they think they don’t have anything new to learn once they’ve been hired.

Sharice is living proof that only educated, knowledgeable, take-their-public-servant-jobs-seriously people should EVER be a Supervisor or Manager, period. She thought she knew something (WRONG!), she thought she had some power over citizens (WRONG!), she thought she knew the law (WRONG!), she thought she could bully someone and get away with it (WRONG!) and she thought if she just REFUSED to do her job she wouldn't get in trouble (WRONG!)...but the law, individual rights, federal court rulings and the Constitution don't give a flying CRAP what people like her want or think...THEY ARE ALL JUST GOVERNMENT PUBLIC SERVANT WORKER BEES...THAT'S IT!

    • @steph_nyc

Be careful with the first impression. They know what's the deal, and they're gonna act nice in front of the camera and even tell the public servant he has the right to film but...eyes speak louder than words and I think they strongly disagree with what TTA is doing but play the game. One of the two officers said : "unfortunately" he has the right to film.
Words have a meaning. But they know the deal with auditors, they know they are filmed...so they play the game.
Back in their car and the office, I have zero doubt those two might have expressed how annoying these auditors are (according to them).
And I'm sure TTA wasn't duped about what was really going on here. But as long as they respect his rights, they are cordial and he replies with the same politeness: mission accomplished.
After all, auditors are not doing this to become friends with cops...but to make sure they enforce laws and not policies or feelings.
And for this reason only, it's important to point that they did the right thing.
I saw some cops who really really understand and agreed with what auditors are doing. I'm not sure I could put them in this category.
I could be wrong but again, at least, they did the right thing. In reality, they did their job. They don't have to agree. They just did their job correctly.
