  • The Rotolight AEOS2 is the most unique light I've ever used, with the best software interface I've ever seen on a light. But is that enough? Buy AEOS2 here: geni.us/bvNE2Bd
NB: Rotolight sponsored this video, but as always the views expressed herein are absolutely my own.

My friend and videographer Larry Monteith has been using the Rotolights for some time now and I'm quite impressed with them (even the small ones), seeing that they punch much above their "weight" for both stills and especially video. I applaud their thinking outside the box and love the fact that we have more great options than ever! All the best, sir!

Thanks again for your thoughts. Interesting and eloquent as usual. We have a few Aeos1 and the smaller Neo2 here in our studio. The light quality is great and the flash mode works nice for smaller set-ups. I’m really looking forward to these new versions. There’s also a Neo3 underway which combines brilliantly. A small set of two or three gets you in business and the Elinchrome integration works great. One of the biggest benefits of the Roto’s vs. many panels is the round shape. You get perfect catch lights, rather than the square windows…

Given my current flashes are Godox I wish there was (also) Godox trigger support but I believe that it will work with cable sync as well, so that might work for me if I will eventually buy one of these. 🙂

Hugh, I trust you rather implicitly because your reviews are detailed, forthright, critical when needed, and above all else honest. Because of that I backed this on Kickstarter and actually just received my production unit today (Aeos 2)… Still waiting on the Neo 3. I have yet to unbox or try it but I am excited based upon both your initial review and the current one. I hope it is everything that it is being touted to be. Thanks again for a fair and unbiased review

Great review Hugh. Please do a follow up when the Bowens adapter is available. I would also love to see more examples of the light being used in flash mode.

Don't even know why this video popped back up. But another modifier solution for a scrim, would be to just have one of those studio microphone screen arms, that have the flexible arm with tensioner or squeeze clip that can attach directly to the light stand.

For me the attraction of these LED lights and LED lights with LED flash is not in video, but in their ability to provide rapid fire flash when burst-shooting or for fast shooting when focus bracketing, without having to wait for flash recycle times.
Given its portability, for me the NEO3 is the most intriguing version however it may be a while still before I can justify the cost for my own purposes. 😁

Excellent vid. As a strobe shooter invested in all bowens mount modifiers and knowing that gear well... it's gotta be a pass for me. Really nice tho, lots to love

You raise some excellent points, especially the ones related to modifiers which is why I’m still happy in Godox land. However if Rotolight came out with their own version of a continuous/strobe version of the AD200 then sign me up.
I also personally know 2 Rotolight masters of light so perhaps I should discuss some ideas with them.

Jason Lanier has been an Ambassor for Rotolight for years, so his postings featuring the AEOS and Neo devices are far from unbiased, but he has posted a great deal of content demonstrating their usefulness within their limits. Thanks as always for your carefully considered thoughts.

They probably could install a circle magnet to make modifiers just stick on in a snap.

  • @dct124
    @dct124 2 года назад

I like your ring idea. Was thinking half ring with slots similar to those adjustable dumbbells. Say there's a slotted hole around the half or full circle with a simple locking pin so the modifiers can be turned if using designed modifiers. I think they're called Gobo's.
I'm laughing just thinking about one of those old toys from the 70s, the view master's. If they use a blank/black card with combination openings that can be spun for varying effects. Sorta like how an old film projectors cast shadows on the wall. Like think about those old projector machines and how the doors opened housing the film.
The Aeos looks like one of those 📽️ rolls.

Your videos and your breakdown of different equipment like the rotolight absolutely outstanding. However I would highly recommend that you get rid of PayPal, the reasons why will be fully apparent if you Google PayPal's overreach with their customer base. Just watching your videos I'm sure you would not aligned with somebody that does not have your values

Super honest review, albeit, not conclusive until you receive the final product. I applaud Rotolight for ground breaking construction, controls and tech...However...There has been a push for photographers from these manufacturers' via influencers to ditch strobes for LED. Ive purchased a slew of constant lights over the last three years with hopes of photographic use, To include Rotolight NEOs. To be honest, they will never replace strobes. They just simply are not powerful enough. A modest Godox SL60 needs be within a meter of the subject. Even so, Pupils become pinholes and the subject have to squint as if looking into the sun. Any closer, and the skin will blister. I think they are a great concept and very viable for video but with regard to photography, they are a bust.

I don't like the barn doors, they cause hash mark shadows on everything and you cant use them with the dome. So you may have to make a round diffusion disk out of diffusion material to kill the shadows. Then find a way to attach it, Maybe glue magnets to it. Diffuser dome removal from the yoke isn't great, but I do like the location of the power button. And yes a locking power plug would be nice.

I guess AEOS2 is meant to work together with smaller NEO3 when smaller sized modifiers like snoots have to be used

Hi Hugh, the new version is way better than the original Aeos light. The first version has a terrible UI and less power. I have two and there good for indoor studio work. Outside with a ND filter at 12noon is good money too. But the new version I’m very interested in but of course it has a new version price. Sigh……..and more sigh 😞🤓😝

How can you possibly fail to mention what F-stop and shutter speeds you were shooting with and only mention distance of the light from subject-It seems like you may have accidentally left that out. (SPONSORSHIP?)

B ((( Rotolight / Sony Pocket Flash Important Information )))
Hello for those individuals that are thinking about purchasing the NEO PRO and the AEOS PRO lights. You need to be aware that these lights are only half the power of a Standard pocket flash. I did a thorough test on these lights with my Seckonic Light Meter for absolute accuracy. I set the AEOS Pro & a on Camera Flash 6 feet from my light meter. I then set my ISO at 500 I set the shutter speed at 250th of a second and my aperture at 2.8 . Using Flash at max power with the AEOS Pro then adjusting my on Camera Flash to match the exact same Power outage as the AEOS Pro . And found that the AEOS Pro was half the power of a 80 W. Pocket flash / on Camera Flash. Please understand what I am saying it is extremely important for you to know that these lights are only have to power of an on camera flash.
Half the power that’s it. If you would like to know more I have placed a comment below this one to give you much more information if you are truly interested.
