Thanks Steve, we had a similar challenge which you gave me advice on. We had a warm roof joing a cold roof with a vaulted ceiling. I installed 100mm PIR at the junction of the 2 roof construction types and painted all of the joints with passive purple to try and eliminate any airflow from the cold roof to the warm space under the warm roof. Its really frustrating the poor quality of building work that is still happening in the UK. Our build is subject to BC inspections but these are really not paying attention to detail. I do understand that it cost more to do the job right and thats why people cut corners.

Yes, unfortunately, we just can't get the tradesmen and nobody seems to be interested in doing it properly.

Nice one, Steve. I'm sure the gentleman involved will be pleased to see this video. It's a real shame that this problem wasn't considered during the design of the extension. However, as you pointed out, some improvements can be made. 🙏 Thanks for sharing it with us all

Some great advice there for this home owner.
Another option would be to use thermal insulated boards on the inside of the room and with the addition of closing of the junction between the cold and warm roof with multifoil.
I would also make sure that the air in the cold roof can circulate and escape from the soffit and through ridge vents.
    Should solve the problem

Are people really building in this way? This is basic physics! 😮

Unfortunately, you know that and I know that, but I don't know what it is. Maybe I'm getting old because the more I see the more I can't believe it.

Very useful Steve. The other option is to take the tiles off and stuff the gap with insulation to maintain continuous insulation from wall to ceiling. Only if the ceiling internally is already finished otherwise like you say taking the plasterboard off is the other option. By the way have you seen any warm roof done with multilayer foil insulation only and not rigid foam..

I haven't seen any flat roofs done with multi foil yet I've been close to doing one or two that's for sure and yes I forgot to mention that he could've done it from the tiles but realistically that would cost a lot more money and be a lot more difficult is much better off to take the ceiling down can you imagine doing it through between all the joist? Keeping the rain out? You'd have to take the Phil and all the buttons off and all the tiles off and reaching whether it would be much easier to do it from underneath.

@SteveRoofer thanks Steve . Would be interesting to get your views on multifoil approach in a future video because I have looked at details of one of the multifoil companies website on how they do a warm roof and just wondering about your take on this

I think my new build (Outside of snagging period) has these same issues. NHBC are not interested either.
The house is spread over three floors and has bedrooms in the roof space.
I can feel air movement through the light fittings on the 1st floor bedrooms.
Thermal camera shows the first 1.5 meters of bedroom ceiling as cold.

I do a lot of surveys on NHBC properties like most insurance companies they're just not interested

      I wasn't sure if I needed a roofer or a general builder.
The void is not accessible, so will have to work out best way of accessing it.
Annoyingly its the same issue at front and rear of the house, so I have to fix the same issue twice.
Might be able to cut an access hole in the 1st floor landing ceiling and then crawl in the void.

How the hell does this stuff get signed off by building control!?

    • @davideyres955
      @davideyres955 2 дня назад +3

Because building control dosnt actually do their job which is stop crap building. My place has so many builders bodges it drives me up the wall. All of the insulation in my flat roof was nigh on useless as it didn’t touch the ceiling and has a channel down to the end of the roof where the cold air came in. The more work I do the more short cuts and bodges I find.

that is gonna be one of my next videos because it actually says in their statement that they are sign of work that is wrong because it's not their responsibility. I've got that in there 64 page downloadable PDF.

Easy fix, lucky for them it's only got concrete roof tiles, strip back first 3 rows of tiles, pull battons off, celotex joist in triangle and upstand inbetween joists foam all gaps., not perfect but night and day difference for heat retention and will stop all cold draughts.
