I turning 69 today. As a white high school girl in Detroit I signed up for the first Black History class ever offered. It was fascinating and enriching. I can't believe this is being taken away from kids. Seems like we are having to fight all the same battles again. We can't move forward if we keep having to go back and redo.
Btw I also took the first Sex Ed class offered. This class also wouldn't be allowed today in some places. We even learned how gays and lesbians make love. We were very curious about this stuff and it was good to get the real facts. Btw. It somehow did not make me gay
The GOP has plunged us into an Orwellian abyss of ignorance and irony.

As a Black girl, I did the same in my area. I was thrilled andas a result, ended up going into education as a field. As you know, there were "freedom schools" that taught mostly Black kids about culture, civics and other important things during the civil rights and Black power eras. Local adults with the knowledge taught the youth. We may have to go back to that model if the supremacists get their way. Are you ready?
The way the GOP can scream and rant about "cancel culture" (not a thing) and at the same time get away with actually censoring Black and LGBTQ culture and history is bone chilling.

Of these, the most important was undoubtedly what was called 'the traveling telegraph,' which allowed trains to continue communicating with stations and each other even while in transit. Without Woods' input, it is unlikely we would have radio, television, or satellites.

In 4th grade, we all had to do a report on a historical person; as a white girl I chose MLK and all my black class mates looked at me in shock.
