  • This is a tally of all taxes I paid, including income tax, social security contributions, sales tax, gas tax, property tax, living in Vancouver in 2022. The high cost of living (particularly housing), coupled with taxes make the city very unaffordable.

Imagine getting robbed and cops telling you it was just a "contribution"

Over the past 10 years the Canadian way is to be comfortably numb to bad governance. Numb to 1/3 taxes with a massively rising national and provincial debt. Numb to Real Estate costs going up even though we have plenty of land to build (bad governance through permits to build). We could be rich through resource extraction but we don’t because… environment… sort of… bad governance again. These days all our problems are bad governance. It’s so clear. We have shot our economy with a giant bazooka through bad regulations, slow government, and high taxes. China, Russia, Iran and North Korea must laugh at Canada on the daily.

Agree and even when we do extract natural resources, somehow we don't get the benefit of it :/

It's funny I want to save money but it's hopeless. My solution is literally to move out of this country…

It’s super tough, especially now with sky high inflation. But keep grinding, continue to develop your skills & become more valuable in the marketplace and save every penny (live like a broke student). Good luck!

What is the most affordable city(s) in Canada in your opinion? Or the ones with lower taxes? Thank you!

Toronto and Vancouver are pretty unaffordable cities in general. In terms of housing, AB, SK, MB or the maritimes provinces are generally cheaper, but you have to factor in things like job opportunities and pay to make a full determination (many people stick to the larger cities for the social circles as well).

What's your situation man? There's some money on BC Wildfire, I recommend you look at being a medic and finding a company to pay for your certification or signing on to a ministry firefighter team. Do your best not to sign onto to independent contracts, you'll be stuck with type 3 and lower crews and they don't pay at all for that kind of work. If that's not your shtick, you could try working in film. Even PA's go home with a couple hundred in a day. There's also harder jobs like general labour for construction, janitorial work can pay more than minimum wage too. Lot's of options for you man, don't settle for less if you can take the hit of finding a new job.
