Matt Johnson is an amazing human. For as long as I have known him, his passion for salmon is like nothing else. We need more people like him in the world.
I participated in the 2008 deer creek survey on my home water. The numbers were already trending poorly then. This is truly a very sad story, beautiful spawning habitat up there
Thanks so much. Yes, very tragic - sort of a slow motion free-fall too as we’re watching the Deer Creek (and shortly all CA Spring Run) go extinct right in front of us.
I fished it last Sunday for small rainbows about a mile and a half downstream of Hwy 32 bridge coming from Chico. No sign of salmon 😢 Still the best creek for a pretty hike and swim within an hour of town
Have there been any fires on Deer Creek in the last 20 years? On the creek with salmon the area is more open to sunlight and willows appear on the shoreline. No mention of the food chain of the young salmon returning to the ocean. Why?
The area on Butte Creek burned pretty bad during the 2018 Camp Fire (very late season fire, November 8th). Deer Creek canyon has not had a fire of that scale and intensity in many years.
God, yes. I'm assuming this was 2022 when the segments were shot for this series...yea, its a devastating situation for SR. This part has described the situation well. I've been sending these links out to all my CA biologist friends. I hope you get a lot more views and likes, because your efforts are amazing and I highly appreciate this work.
Thanks SO MUCH for sharing!! That means the world to us. Yes, not shot in 2023. And if you have any ideas on who might amplify, please let us know...we're conservationists/storytellers (and not bad at either), but poor promoters of our own work!
Wait, why are dancing around with the facts about the “trunk” the Sacramento River isn’t a good habitat for juvenile salmon? Explain!! Is it the seals and sea lions killing them all? Is it fishing? What is it?
This is thoroughly explained in the next episode (number 5 in this series) titled "Juvenile Rearing Habitat". TLDW, the levies in place have reduced the width of the "trunk" that is the Sacramento River, and so it's a deep and narrow channel, the shallows are now gone which were ideal rearing habitat for those juvenile salmon.
thank you Joe and crew! appreciate the work that you do for us.

Ya, Matt is the best…he really made this story possible and is a passionate conservationist. Much more Matt content in the next few episodes too 😊
He was teary eyed and almost cried saying they only saw 40ish fish left 😢
This is a fantastic series--thank you!!

Stumbled upon this series and it’s amazing (yet tragic), keep up the good work and I hope this spreads far and wide!

@Where_The_Wild_Roam I'm asking around to find a peer with access to a large audience like Amer Fisheries Society or others. Fingers crossed!
Thanks again. This is amazing. Much appreciated
A mouse🐀?
Did it ever show any spawning fish ?
Anyone know what part of deer creek this is ?
Upper Deer Creek
Devastating episode
Ya, it sucks...and hence why we made this whole series...
When these populations become terminal, intervention is a must. Broodstock hatchery programs have to happen to maintain the genetics.
Well said--and good foresight. This has indeed happened just in the last few weeks.

Just the thought on that poor female laying eggs without a partner is just so sad!😢
