Vietnam must be in a latestage with Nguyen dominating
According to wikipedia, 38% of Vietnams population has the surname Nguyen
My last name is Tieu, a pretty uncommon Vietnamese name... but my mother’s maiden name is Le which is pretty popular
Jenna Tieu Le or Lee? Lee is generally more western, and Le is a common Vietnamese surname. My last name is Ngo, approximately 1% of Vietnamese people share my last name, so technically it’s pretty common.
In Vietnam, during dynasties, people would take the last name of the emperor's. So, technically I am not.
Nguyen is now the 3rd most common name in Australian phone books.
So you're telling me, surnames have a possibility to go extinct? My goodness. Every single surname will blow into tiny Smithereens.
LonelyGrayWolfie
I see what you did there
i am the only hope to all my father family surname, my grandfather had just one son (my father) and he only had me... pss
LonelyGrayWolfie forebears
LonelyGrayWolfie my grandmothers maiden name for my bloodline no longer exists, total strangers walk around with it though so small consolation
LonelyGrayWolfie if
dunno if I trust this guy... he called a pie chart a cake. shifty.
In italy the pie chart is called a "diagramma a torta" witch when translated mean cake chart
king potato in Germany we call this 'Kuchen', which... means Cake.
Well, "Kuchen" can also mean pie. It's the same I guess
Also in Spanish it is called "Pastel" which means cake
Pie > cake. Cake is just boring bread.
no mention of how Nguyen is like 75% of Vietnamese surnames?
Trevor Chenoweth I've been waiting for this comment!
That's not due to marriage and birth though. Explanation: "When Hồ Quý Ly overturned the Trần Dynasty, he killed many of their descendants so when the Hồ Dynasty collapsed in 1407, many of his descendants changed their surname to Nguyễn in fear of retribution"
I wonder what fraction of the population the name had after that incident then.
Though what you said is true, it will only serve to speed up the process of 1 common surname and that'll likely be Nguyen. Mine is Do by the way and yes, I'm a Vietnamese.
mine is Hà, it´s a rare one :3
Bru I ain't breading with no damn smith😤😤
Are you african.I am asking because you said bru
Calm down Okonkwo

That's ok you can dare Sniths instead.
Smrlord Ukpong do not insult the village leader you fool
I feel so common...
Chris Williams Have a day, average person.
Chris Williams I AM BIERMAN
i feel you man
I also feel very average
Chris Williams I know what you mean
names like smith were for blacksmiths, tailors became taylor, must be really unfortunate to have the last name Dickinson
Dad, why is there a dick stuck in me?
CounterGriefZombies It didn't used to mean that. This generation sucks.
CounterGriefZombies Dickinson: son of Richard.
What about me? My surname is Lord
No, it's Jayde
Wait...how did the people with surname called "Dickinson" get their name from? oh god
means "son of Richard"
Dick being short for Richard makes it possible it started out with a bloke called Richard who went by the name Dick who had kids who became Dickson. Over time it just evolved into Dickinson as people changed how they like to be called or it was misheard or poorly noted down by scribes which seems to happen a lot in the Middle Ages, unless of course it was just a bad joke about a weird gay relationship between a father and son (Dick-in-son) which would be... different
Drunk Cat Phil "Dick being short" xD
"Dick-in-Son" ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
RICHARD
This video doesn't take into account countries where surnames do not follow the same traditions as most western countries. For example, in my home country, Tajikistan, we do not follow the same principle. Surnames change each generation because the kid's surnames are their father's name with addition zoda(if it's a boy) or i (if it's a girl). My surname is Muzaffarzoda because my dad's name is Muzaffar and I'm a boy so there is an addition of zoda. My sister surname is Muzaffari because she's a girl. So I don't share my surname with my cousins, uncles, or even my own parents. Only my sister and brothers would have the same surname as me. And because usually, each boy sibling will have a different name, each of their kids will have totally different surnames. Considering all the different traditions in the world, I doubt my home country is the only country that follows a different principle when it comes surnames.
similar to iceland. they do the same thing with the father's name except sson and the end if the kid is a boy and dottir at the end if it's a girl
Abdukahor Muzaffarzoda true but Mexico that shit is not followed my mom still has her last name from birth and so does my other aunts
Abdukahor Muzaffarzoda honest curiosity: if you have a boy yourself, will he be named muzaffarzodazoda? I know eastern europe has something similar with the suffix "ova". But more seriously, if you are only adding a suffix once, soon enough everyone is going to be called "xyxzoda" which kinda sorta brings us bac to the video's point.
Mongolia is the same.
This isn't a western tradition exemplified by a lot of eastern societies using the same rules. It's a family name so it makes sense to stay within the family. That being said, you are right that there are other traditions out there, such as not having a family name at all as some people actually only go by one name.
i don't think i've ever been in a class where no one shared my surname, whenever the teacher called out 'santos' we always had to ask which one
I have never met a Santos in my life.
I have
well i'm from the philippines! i don't think there is a santos in other parts of the world other than like spain maybe? in the philippines it's impossible to encounter someone who doesn't know a santos
omg I have a Filipino friend and his last name is Santos lol
Mica Santos it's also extremely common in Portugal I'm still in school I think there's at list one per class
My last name is Mann.
Very creative
Do you sell hats?
Because my Sentry needs a hat.

what's your first name?
Dasha Mann My friends name is that but in Spanish .-.

What about Vietnamese? It's like everyone is called Nguyen.
Chraman
yeah cuz the last dynasty in VN was the Nguyễn(阮) dynasty.
ppl changed their surnames to claim that they're not enemies of the dynasty
Chraman you've made 2 separate comments on the same video.
Chraman that's actually pretty interesting
Chraman
Chraman Im Le! :3
What this video is missing is China has much fewer names not because of gradual extinction by marriage, but by wholesale name changes. People would change their surname to match the name of the ruling dynasty so they wouldn't stand out as commoners. With each new dynasty, many people would just swap out their last names.
Mlogan11 posers
That's why my new last name is Trump.
He should've taken the name schicklgruber after all.
+Owlblocks David Actually the similarity is a huge number of people registered with the NAZI party once they became the dominant party.
Mlogan11 that is too in India....not just families but communities, whole caste changes the surname.
Well guess what! In Spain, you inherit BOTH your parent's surnames! Take that!
But how do you pass it on, then? If you pass on the entire surname, then your child would have four, two from each parents, and their children would have eight and so on. No, it does not work like that, you choose one of your names - soooo the other names can still die ou :P Btw, I inherited both my parents surnames, too xD
In some places, like Basque Country people care so much about their surnames that they indeed keep track of all their surnames (you're not a true Basque unless you have at least eight Basque surnames) and something similar happens in Latinamerica with indigenous groups because maintaining that surname usually grants some benefits from the goverment. Other than that if you choose to change your surname so that you father's surname is gone then you'll have to take you mother's surname twice.
Also many latinamerican families are vastly numerous so the extintion of surnames is somewhat unlikely.
Joshua Steinemann Pießewotzi
Three different languages. I like it.
You can choose the order of your surnames in Spain.
Same with portuguese speaking countries, you inherit both surnames and sometimes end up with more than 2 surnames even. If I recall the record for longest birth name ever is from a portuguese.
I love the sigh he did when he said "Febland" 😂😂
more giggle than sigh
Take a look at korea, everyone is Kim Lee Choi Hwang Ect.
surprised to see my comment getting 10+ likes
Last year I had three Lee's all in one class. And they weren't even related.. xD
Saeran and Saeyoung/Luciel Choi
Back in high school I knew two Asian guys named John Lee that were not related at all. It was confusing and funny. My name is John too but I'm Hispanic with an uncommon last name.

I wish you would have gone more in-depth about the mathematical simulation of surnames in the next 1000 years.
Yea, I basically scrapped 2 pages of script about that, because after I heard myself speak it out loud I realised that this is going to be painfully boring for 95% of the viewers. And I couldn't come up with an entertaining way to talk about the mathematics of surname proliferation for 5 minutes. I programmed the simulation myself btw. If you're really interested support me on patron, download the program and then just un-support if you want (you won't get charged anything).
Good Guy TheRestOfUs :)
It's just a negative exponentiation ffs, it's impossible to not find information about it on youtube.

In hispanic world the wife doesn't lose her surnames (we use 2), she keeps her own surnames
What do the children get though?
The child first surname from the farher first surname and the child second surname from the mother first surname...although today you can choose your mother's first. For exemple, If my father surnames is Perez Garcia and my mother surnames are Martinez Gonzalez...My surnames are Perez Martinez
brx86 thanks to Islamic civilization
Really?...there it works the same?
Good thing you know that, cause Hispanics just can't stop having babies lol
Chinese women don't have to change their surnames after marriage but their children still take on the father's surname.
Anime Argonaut they can take their mother's surname as well although taking the father's is the more popular practice
Yolandalyc I didn't know that that's pretty cool 😮 Nobody ever takes their mom's surname here but I'm guessing that it might happen in single parent situations
Anime Argonaut in Italy too
Anime Argonaut In Argentina too!
Children may take on mother's surname if her surname is very rare compared to father's surname. Based on the couple's willing.
My boyfriend is a Smith... i'm going to become extinct :(
Maybe he won't marry you
Samantha Machen Make joined name.
Samantha Machen make him take yours

Oh shit yeah. I always thought it was just some cheesy trick but it actually could be us in a few thousand years!
I want to be named Wang. maybe Long Wang
gunniesack If you're a rapper your name will be Lil wang
Issa Knife if I was in prison I would be Lil Bitch
Remember the character Long Duck Dong from "16 Candles"? :-D
It would be the other way, Traditionally, in China. Wang(Surname) Long(Given Name[First name]). My Surname is Kruger-Pretorius. My Great-Great Grandfathers were Marthinus Wessel Pretorius(First President of ZAR/SAR) and Stephanus Johannes Paulus Kruger(a.k.a.Paul Kruger, second President of ZAR/SAR) of the Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek/Suid-Afrikaansche Republiek/South African Republic. Pretoria, South Africa was founded by and is still named after my Oupa Marthinus. Too bad the god damned British destroyed our Country over diamonds and gold along with annexing it into hell hole that is still South Africa. My Grandfathers Marthinus and Paul had intended it to be a safe haven for only-White, Afrikaans and Dutch speaking-Afrikaner and Boere in Southern Africa. Oupa Marthinus, had also considered acquiring, what was then the British South African Company's Land of Rhodesia(now the shit hole that is Zimbabwe) from the BSAC for up to 43.500.000 Pound Sterling in 1894. Which, would have saved the cost and lives of the Tweede Vryheidsoorlog. Both of my Grandfather's would have let the British, Blacks, Coloured and Indians have the rest of South Africa and now my Country is on the verge of a Civil War thanks to the ANC and their corruption. I am going back the second violence breaks out and re-organising my Bush War Veteran Friends and Superiors to create a White-only Militia to help protect White Afrikaner Communities and Farms within ZAR territory. I have thought about re-establishing my Family's Country one way or the other if Civil War does break out. Any Brits and especially Blacks will shot on sight if my Militia catches them in our Country. My Family's vengeance is long over due for their treatment of Afrikaners after 1900 and especially the treatment of Afrikaner Women and Children during the Tweede Vryheidsoorlog. Kaffers have had it coming since 1994 for ending Apartheid and with all of the farm attacks on White Afrikaner Families since then.
Americans have a hard time pronouncing Kruger-Pretorius for whatever reason. I just tell my co-workers to call me Krup.
"Mr.Anderson."

what the problem with having a rem pic?
Icare what?
If you're a female with a rare surname, why not keep that name when you get married and then pass that name off to your children so that the name will continue to survive?
If you have family members with a rare surname that is going "extinct," you could either A.) change your surname to that one, and/or B.) give some or all of your children that rare surname.
Why not bring extinct last names back? If you have a very common surname but there's an old family name that died out/went "extinct" (probably before you were even born and/or one that was on a maternal side), why not change your name to that one and/or name some/all of your children that name?
Rayann Midkiff I'm more than happy to let go of my last name-even the police didn't believe my name lol

Teethgrinder 83 what is it?
Rayann Midkiff Chinese, I don't know about others. Chinese people don't take there husbands last name.

Why is it a bad thing?

Its a bad thing because Muhammad was a warlord, pedophile, polygamist, incest, sex slave owner, persecutor of gays and infidels and christians and jews... so yeah.
Bruce Williams, to be clear, he is talking about the Mohammed in the Quran. If we follow the logic you seem to use, where people with the same name are the same people, then practically everyone would be murderers, rapists etc.
You can tell that a lot of work and research goes into your videos. Great work!

Having 3 Hispanic names in the Top 10, that is America.
Chraman a nation of immigrants, a cultural melting pot, yes. Perhaps one should ask why we don't have native names instead of all these anglo and European ones
@Mark Wickham, uh....because they're practically extinct. What a stupid question.
Chraman Perreira ?
is there a problem with that?
Those three were on the top 25 in the 1990 census. However, if you read the list you find mostly English or English-sounding surnames with a few Spanish surnames in between until you reach surnames like Schultz and Schneider that are well below the top 300.
European immigrants tended to anglicize their surnames to make them easier to understand. Lots of Smiths were actually Schmidt, Ferrero, etc. Many Johnsons were actually Johansson and Johanssen.
Spanish surnames however were as common as British surnames by that time. Many of those Garcia aren't even immigrants but it was the land where they were born that changed hands. "Los Angeles", "San Diego", "El Paso", "San Antonio", "Nevada", "Colorado".. those doesn't sound like names an English speaker would choose for a town or a state.
That feeling you get, when you have a such a unique name and last name, that it shows up as There are 1 or fewer people, and you know it's you
Miles Airo how can u have fewer than one?
Miles Airo I always feel self conscious and sort of embarrassed
Start breeding
Miles Airo My last name has 299k other people, but my first name is very rare. I got the same result. I’m the only one with my name.
There is an actor called Bill Nighy, and he pronounces it like the word nigh (rhymes with dye) with ee at the end. Nigh-ee :)
And he only has one child, a woman named Mary Nighy. Assuming she passes on her husband's name, soon we won't have to learn how to pronounce that last name!
You mean Bill Nye the science guy???
Dave Sterling yes he does
Bill Nye the Science Guy and Bill Nighy the actor (who was in Love Actually, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Pirates of the Caribbean, Hot Fuzz, etc) are two different people.
Its Pronounced Nigga
Lol u forget the system of hyphenating surnames so mr brown marrying ms green become mr brown and mrs green-brown
what happens if, say, Jane Green-Brown, marries Bob Black-White?
Their kids will be Anna Green-Brown-Black-White?
elmohead I'd hope not but it depends on the parents
BlueHypothermicReality you know someone will answer with the "mr yellow and mrs red = mr/s orange" joke
No, that's not how it happens. The children don't take on the hyphenated name and hyphenated names are rarely the actual legal name of the person hyphenating the name. It's just used to make them more recognizable to past acquaintances and give them a tie to their past.
Hyphenated names can be legal names, and children do take them on. Joseph Gordon-Levitt's name is a hyphenated name. And I knew kids with hyphenated surnames, growing up.
Thank god the Kardashian's are going extinct
How about Vietnam. %90 of people called Nguyen
Burak Kerten here in the philippines the common surnames is "santos"
Waldoo?!
Erick Eugenio Here in Brazil is Santos, Souza and Silva

Why smith why not McDonald's
Coolguy 27 xD
skye west Wendy Mcdonald's would be a bomb name

Coolguy 27 Why not Zoidberg?
Because Smiths will assimilate all that walk the Earth, you cannot stop us, we will spread, we will conquer, and we will be the only surname on the planet
Hugh Bonneville from Downton Abbey has an endangered last name I guess...
surnames will NEVER go extinct. If their numbers are reduced, new surnames will replace them do differentiate individuals. Most surnames came into existence by pointing to an occupation, skill, social status or, simply by pointing to the name of the father. Surnames commonly are part of the family heritage. Until the point they become too common. Even today if we have two people with the same name we already are giving them nicknames to differentiate them. It's just the natural evolution of surnames. If variety is reduced, new ones come into existence. Simple as that. My surname is :Talas ( which translates into Potter, or Pot Maker). That came into existence because somebody down the line had that occupation. And if his name was I don't know... George, then the community made him different by the other people with the same name by pointing to his occupation. George the Potter. Which made his son perhaps Jack the potter. And His son maybe Robert Potter. That's all there is to it really. Surnames are not special things to hold on to unless you are concerned about I don't know what kind of royal bloodline, which is ridiculous these days. Surnames will never extinct. They will always be replaced. And that time when everybody has the same surname, will never happen.
Many people in the Middle Ages didn't have surnames to begin with. The whole point of a surname is to differentiate people who shared the same given name. Surnames will go extinct but new ones at some point will have to form for the same problem that made them become necessary.
you forgot harry potter
@@GreaterJan I know of at least two new surnames appeared in the last century (coworkers both). Those new surnames: Chesñevar and Chafer, are spanish "translations" of original Czeck surnames. Immigration will create "new" surnames as foreign surnames with non-existing sounds are translated to other languages (not all the world is the english-speaking-world).
Additionally, not all the world is the english-speaking-world where only one surname is carried on from parents to childs (spanish, catalan, italian, etc.) carry *two* surnames (father and mother), and, in catalan, for example, mothers do not change surnames after marriage.
@@buddy5129 or "Hairy Potter" for one with lots of body hair?
Also one could slightly alter the surname so it means the same thing but spells out differently. This way you're not really changing the surname yet getting the distinction.
In India for example, the surname tagore, thakor, thackeray, etc are variations of Thakur. Which is also a common surname.
These spelling changes happened because they were spoken differently in different languages. Now they're seen as distinct regional surnames.
As my surname being Nott-Hommewindish I feel like it could be in danger
so you've never heard of Bill Nighy???
I thought it was Bill Nye?
wtf, I don't think smith is very popular. ive only ever meet 1 person named smith
pilotpig really, fuck, where you live? Siberia?
These are last names.
pilotpig
Yeah, like you've seen every person in the world and have been told their names, in order to make that assumption.
Moron
smith is very popular in some countries
deffdefying good thing you signed your comment, otherwise we would think you are a Smith.
Hmm does the one child rule have an impact on 3 common surnames in China...?
mymcy trust in general, Chinese culture discourages people with the same surname from having children or relationships, so they take partners from the smaller surname groups and accelerates surname extinction.
Farmers were allowed to have many in those days too. Skewing it again.
not necessarily
Chinese don't change surnames on mariage in the first place. Doesn't effect the child though.
In Japan it is common for a man to take his wife's surname if she has no brothers, to keep on the family line via surname. However, there is no consideration for rarity of name, just whether or not it remains in the same bloodline. So a man with an extremely rare surname might be forced to take the name Suzuki or Sato for the sake of his wife's family. On another note, it is not extremely rare for new surnames to be invented in Japan, although the approval process can be quite strict.
i am the only one in my whole family that can continue.
geo grjzzly You now have a legacy my dude
get 3 sons atleast
It all rests on your shoulders now.
grjzzly, at least, is an unconventional spelling. so procreate, my son.
but will you continue
Wait, did you just say humans will go extinct before surnames do?
Something about that doesn't seem quite right.
Amadeus
How? It's perfectly plausible for there to still be unique surnames at the point of our own extinction.
Right before the last human dies, I'm pretty sure the number of unique surnames is going to be 1.
So based on this graph starting at just 10,000 surnames by generation 200 we would have 93 surnames. That's 4000 years. Now because the actual number is much higher you could probably multiply that number a couple of times. Meaning the chance of the Human race still being alive and well with one surname is very very unlikely.
I think you're missing my point lol. The human race is not alive and well in the last moments of going extinct.
What? Are you high?
Zipf mistery!!!
Not rely a Zipf distribution, considering the top 3 surnames in china were all around the same proportion of the population
I see you have a good taste of profile pics :P
+tommy chan Lmao dude
Hey! Nice to see you again. We seem to have a very similar taste in RUclips videos x) Are you by chance studying Artificial Intelligence?
Do that include neuro network?
In Portugal things are becoming different. Many women decide to not take their husband's surname anymore and even concerning their children things are changing. Sometimes if a couple has two children one can have the father's surname as their last name and the other one can have the mother's surname as their last name. That will slow down a little the surname extinction although only slightly since it's not what the majority still does. Of course if you have only one child or three that won't work out because one surname will still be taking an advantage over the other. But at least that process could certainly help for the surname extinction to go that fast.
i wish there are two parts of a last name
first name-mother's last name-father's last name.
and mother's last name part will be part from generations to generations and father's last name part from generations to generations.
so if John Blue Black marries Jane Pink Purple their kid would be: Jack Pink Black.
and unlike the common situation, their kid would be Jack Black or sometimes Jack Purple Black (meaning last name only comes from the fathers of both the husband and wives.
i want to keep the last names from my great great great great great grand mother and father. i want to know the roots of both sides and not just one.
... What a stupid alternative, children and full siblings having different surnames.
Provocateur Not really. It isn't disrespectful with anyone, because the husband also chooses that.
Provocateur Not really, dumbass.
I'm Portuguese and everyone I know has at least two surnames: one from the mother and one from the father. And I've never met anyone who changed their last name to their partner's. I have one aunt that decided to add her husband's last name to her name, but she kept the other two. But not even my grandparents did that, each of them still has the same surnames they were given by their parents
I love my first and last name - Reef Kurupo
I'm very saddened by surname extinction. My grandfather had 3 sons and 1 daughter. From the 3 sons there are 8 children (so 8 grandchildren) who originally carried his last name. Out of us 8 there's only 1 boy! Not a huge issue but made me sad that his name hasn't been passed down as many others have. I don't think Khan is endangered but story behind our surname is wonderful and I intend to pass it on somehow to my children.
If my surname was Halliwell or Cromwell I definitely would keep it
Just call me Ms. Portendorfer.
"Please donate £5 a month so you can save the endangered Portendorfer..."
When you live in South East Asia especially Indonesia and you don't have a surname *Meh*
Ferry Ansony I think the rest of the world would could count your father's first name as a sort of surname. Son or daughter of X.
Sherifa : That would be called a patronymic (ie. "dad's name");
and curiously, nowadays, only monarchs or socially "primitive" people would do that instead of a "real" last name.
Le Huy-Anh Not sure what you mean by socially primitive. Some countries with a majority Muslim population still do this.
People need to stop thinking that "Muslims" are all the same:
*civilised* Muslims will *real geneologies*, like *Arabs and North Africans, have real last names*.
People of Muslim background in the former Soviet Union also have *real last names*.
Only non-Arabs like Afghans or Pakistanis, who have lost their family histories, randomly do that.
Persians are proud to be part of an ancient civilisation far older than Islam, and no longer give their kids Arabic names.
My first girlfriend was Algerian, and I've dated two Moroccans and a Yemeni, and they all have real last names.
I don't even understand what you mean my civilised or "real" last names. I know people that are Malay and their names operate in the system I mentioned above. When you're a woman your name doesn't change, because you don't stop being the daughter of *inserts fathers' name*. Although all Muslim people aren't the same, you lost me the moment you started using *real*. Using a different system doesn't make someone uncivilised.
My last name is Tickel so I think I'm safe
Andrew Tickel: As long as you decide to keep the name "Tickel".
Guess what? *YOU CAN LEGALLY CHANGE YOUR FIRST, MIDDLE, OR LAST NAME. NO NAME CAN GO EXTINCT.*

In Spanish-speaking culture, everyone has two last names: one from mom and one from dad. And you don't give up your last names when you marry.
So that's why there are so many people with the surname "Gonzales Martinez"
"The More You Know"
not necesarialy, in Colombia women can give up her surname and replace it with "de x" x being the surname of her lover.
Well you can always change your name

Well my family name is pretty much fucked! At least there aren't going to be any more Hitlers' in the next five years!
We can always have our names legally changed.
Surnames might also vanish for other reasons. In the 1935 Manhattan phone book there were 25 people listed with the surname "Hitler". 10 years later, in 1945 there were zero. I'm not sure if that surname is extinct or not, but I've never heard of anyone with that name after 1945.
When I was in high school there was a Chinese kid whose surname was "Unknown". This came about when his great-great grandparents migrated to the US. His grandfather was asked his name by immigration officials, then asked to spell it. He could not spell it with Roman letters so the official simply wrote "unknown" with the intention of filling in the correct name later. However this correction was never made, so the surname became "Unknown" because he literally didn't know what his surname was.
I've never meet a Smith. Mr, Mrs, Miss, or otherwise.
E. Louise M. Do you live under a rock?
maybe just a country without a low population of english/american people?
E. Louise M. That's why you live under a rock

My Oma’s maiden name was Nejedly, a Czechoslovakian last name. I’m still mad that she gave it up for Packard 😂
imagine the pressure of being one of the last few people with an endangered surname, just imagine it
It's just a fucking name
@@ofimportance5458 alright spicy one, way to comment with unwarranted salt on a two year old comment. names, including family names, can mean a lot to some people, potentially especially so if they have an endangered last name

approximately 136 People bearing my surname. (I'm pretty sure it's correct since multple sites get to that number) Still wondering what it must feel like to meet someone of same surname, that is not a sibling, parent or uncle.^^
It's a cool feeling, but not sensational. I share my last name with my family (obviously), Jeff Kinney (author of Diary of A Wimpy Kid) and Taylor Kinney (don't remember.)
well its just a name xP
On the other hand, if you have an extremely common name, you are Google-proof. Anyone searching for embarrassing details of ypur life is overwhelmed by a mountain of irrelevant stuff about people with the same name.
I have a good friend with my last name. He's got a brother who's also my friend so they're both friends with the same last name.
Yeah, I'd love to have a really bizarre but cool combination of names, but honestly I could probably post nearly anything I wanted and get away with it due to the fact that my first and surname are both incredibly common, but also happens to be the name of a Mormon religious figure. A little ironic, because I'm a very secular atheist, but not terrible by any means.
So my name could be Onyetenyevwe Ugwemuhwem Osas?

nah , I was joking
wtf
My ancestor was a slave in the US who bought his freedom. When he was freed, he came up with his own last name and chose one that he thought would show his devotion to God. Only a few people in America have that name. My mother had that name and lost it when she married my father. She had 2 brothers, one of which had only girls and another that had two sons, one who is gay and another who suffers from PTSD from war and has no desire to start a family.
Unless my gay cousin has a kid and passes that name on, it will likely go extinct. We had a good run😢
Thanks for sharing! I have to ask - what’s the name? :)
what about the increase in women keeping their own names
it doesnt matter if they keep it what matters is what the childrens names are,
I plan to give my children my last name, if it's a girl, his if it's a boy.
Lucy Hunt i know a lot of ppl who have the surname of their mother (german)
Violet Tippet that is one way to keep last names from going extinct. the other way is to have two parts of a last name but this will take the whole society.
so first name-mother's last name-father's last name.
so even is John Blue-Black marries Jane Pink Purple their kid will be Jean Pink Black.
unlike the likely situation, where four last names are too long so the kid usually became Jean Black or Jean Purple Black (no last name from the mother's mother)
here an idea for your kids,
say if your name is Jane Purple and your husband is John Black,
daughters would become: name Black Purple
sons would become: name Purple Black.
that way they can carry names from both sides of the family.
hahaha "endangered surnames" :)
I don't get what's so funny about that.

Wow man that's a crazy surname situation to be in. I know where you're coming from though. I was born in Sri Lanka but I ended up with a Sri Lankan first name and "Bartholomew" as a surname due to crazy circumstances. Pretty much everyone is like HOW THE FUCK is your surname Bartholomew lol
*When will we all be Nguyen’s
ok but the question is
when did we start our surnames?
My last name is Trigger, and I want that last name to carry on (partly because of it's ridiculousness). :)
BLEACH DRINKER Name your son Edward... cuz "Trigger Ed"...
Sam guy nah, he should just name him ed, so when the teacher is doing the role his name will be trigger ed
Name your son Chrono :V

I have a pretty weird surname, never met another one in person with the same surname that isn't family (it's "Vollans" in case you're wondering)
My last name is Glasgow, there is no way in hell im changing mine when I get married (it's also quite funny since I'm from Edinburgh)
Tess Glasgow OMG that's funny
Tess Glasgow Glasgow is an amazing surname
Hope your man's last name is Edinburgh and he's from Glasgow. lol.
Me too.
Shoot I'm keeping my last name, it's Russian/ polish so it's different
Could totally pass as some form of Eastern European name if you make it look a bit fancier. Perhaps even Celtic.
Bleàch.
In the US, a lot of people have English/Irish surnames.
My surname is German, and I live in the US. Not only that, but it's very rare. I feel special.

Same.
My surname is shared with about 20 people in my country.
Here in the Netherlands we don't have to get the surnames of our dads. My mom got married After we were born, she kept her own name. Next to that me and my brother have my mom's surname 😏
Here in the USA, it's the same story.
Probably never. By the time we're almost all Smiths we probably abolish surnames because they don't make sense by then
MK People will have microchip numbers.
Wow, our ancestors in the middle ages created surnames to differentiate themselves, but now the idea is just going to backfire and we'll all have the same last name. So, we'll just be right back to where we started.
I do like your idea for a solution. I wouldn't mind using a badass name I created from social media. That would be awesome!
However, we're going to have to get rid of last names entirely when the time comes and just stick with one name, but I'm pretty sure we can get creative.
Great video.
There is not such thing as Dark Ages, this was historically debunked.
Maybe soon we will start calling people by their numbers, like 24601.

Robotic Crafter that was mentioned in the video, but the author pointed out that a very small percentage of people do that, slower than the rate of existing last names go extinct 🤔
Adolf Hitlers relatives that are still living had their last names changed, so I guess it's not impossible to do.
