I was 13 years old and from my pocket money I bought the LP Maria Callas, my first LP ! I loved opera and Maria Callas was my hero and still is. That is now 57 years ago.I still cry every time when I hear her magnificent voice. I listen to other Opera female singers all the time and no one brings me immediately into tears. Maria is the absolute best for me since not only she has a voice that covers all high/low notes, but also there is so much emotion. You just know she "lived" through all the operas she performed. From her tragic life losing Aristotle Onassis (he did not deserve her in the first place)to Jacky Kennedy. Jacky wanted money , Aristotle wanted class , so he "bought" Jacky . Maria only wanted love. So sad to know that Maria Callas had class and money........and the most beautiful voice ever!
She was also very self conscious and obsessed with her appearance in terms of weight with constantly dieting as well as depressed, had problems with her mother and then, the whole Aristotle Onassis snub was too much for her. If only she realized what a gift she had and that she could do better in the love department than him. I think she is still the best opera singer in the world.

From the late 50's Maria Callas had problems with her voice in the higher register but the middle register was and still is, totally unique. No other soprano in recorded history possessed such an amazing sound and that is why I believe she remains to this day, supreme as a dramatic interpreter.

And was there ever a more electrifying tonic B natural than the one Callas produces at the climax of this aria? One catches a glimpse of eternity in that note.
She touches me more deeply than i ever thought possible.. last night i wept bitterly, hopefully,in awe of the delicate and fleeting moment of beauty, and perfection as i listened to her voice soar above any care i had, life or death and all understanding a word.... her emotions stir a desire to simply be better at being human. ... by connecting to the agony and ecstacy like a raw conduitof genuine feeling made vocally communicable .. and ao much more. Something we NEED DEEPLY but often ignore in lieu of electronoc companionship. INSPIRATION! BREATHE THIS MUSIC!
Noone else sings this with such command. When she sings 'Io son divino' she truly is divine! And she knew it. I love many singers on this, Sondra Radvanovsky particularly, but Callas in the measuring rod.

"La mamma morta m'hanno
Alla porta della stanza mia
Moriva e mi salvava
Poi a notte alta
Io con Bersi errava
Quando ad un tratto
Un livido bagliore guizza
E rischiara innanzi a' passi miei
La cupa via
Guardo
Bruciava il loco di mia culla
Così fui sola
E intorno il nulla
Fame e miseria
Il bisogno, il periglio
Caddi malata
E Bersi, buona e pura
Di sua bellezza ha fatto un mercato
Un contratto per me
Porto sventura a chi bene mi vuole
Fu in quel dolore
Che a me venne l'amor
Voce piena d'armonia e dice:
"Vivi ancora
Io son la vita
Ne' miei occhi e il tuo cielo
Tu non sei sola
Le lacrime tue io le raccolgo
Io sto sul mio cammino e ti sorreggo
Sorridi e spera! Io son l'amore!

One of the drawbacks of Nilsson's technique was that she never sang small fast passages, e.g. passages in Macbeth look far from perfect. It's a direct result of her heavy technique
Walking by some bloody Parisian streets with this beautiful piece in my ears. Flowers and sand everywhere. Young men and women with crutch and rolling chairs giving a last goodbye to their beloved friends. You should see them. I swear they scream in their silence, surrounded by crying buildings.
I can feel you pain and this masterpeace represents it very good. MC the greatest sopran of all. Message of this song: I will survive all misery
La Callas........Grande entre las grandes, lo mejor de la lírica mundial...........
Qué maravilla de interpretación!!!!! Una voz única, para mi la mejor cantante de todos los tiempos. Qué triste que haya partido tan jóven de este mundo.
Suonare la voce...per Carpire il pathos Divino ...che ubriaca un'aria Splendida di una verità Assoluta.
Every time I listen this wonderful song I cannot avoid the tears from my eyes...
Noone else sings this with such command. When she sings 'Io son divino' she truly is divine! And she knew it. I love many singers on this, Sondra Radvanovsky particularly, but Callas in the measuring rod.
I love Callas but others sing with great command as well.
Up there with the best not every artist can leave such an impression on you but Maria callas can her voice is heavenly she is one of the greats
the great maria.. she was a woman of such beauty and talent. a unique creature of extraordinary measure.
