Blow molding model airplane fuel tank

  • This is an 8oz Hayes tank being blow molded at MECOA K&B in Irwindale CA. It takes a while to cool in the mold because the wall thickness is heavier than an average bottle.
    It extrudes a sock (or tube) and that has to be perfectly aligned with the mold when it closes.
    After this it's trimmed, then the neck is machined and the 2 holes are drilled in the nipples.

    I wish MECOA would start producing the hay's tanks again, The 3 and 4 oz tanks were perfect for Profile control line models, nothing else better. However they have been out of stock for years. I guess I will have to be protective of my stash of Hay's tanks.
