- Margaret Hamilton, best remembered as the Wicked Witch of the West in "The Wizard of Oz", singing "Liaisons" from a live recording of the national tour of "A Little Night Music", in which she appeared with Jean Simmons and George Lee Andrews. I saw this at the Kennedy Center when I was a student nearby and she was not an aged Scandinavian courtesan but walked off with the show anyway (much to Simmons' displeasure during the curtain call). She also very sensibly refused to fall asleep after walking across the stage with her stick, but just walked off. Stritch recently said she wanted to top Gingold as the best Madame Armfeldt but she had Angela, Regina, and Margaret at least in front of her, and Glynis, Elizabeth, Sian and several others too. Cleaned by Tormented Artist Ink Studios (me).
I saw her in Chicago and she literally held the audience breathless. We did expect this memorable performance from the Wicked Witch of the West. I met here in St. Louis when was DOING the Witch at the 11,000 seater Muny. A little woman, very pleasant and she reminded me, a teacher, of a teacher, which indeed she was at one time. She worked to the end and I think enjoyed life.
What a wonderful curio. This is why I love You Tube
Margaret Hamilton so amazing doing "Liaisons" Shubert Theater with Jean Simmons went twice, mesmerizing & magnificent...still remember it well
Thank you a million times for this. I do imagine that the audience lost their minds for her curtain call. She is, after all, a legend.
Love this song.
Bravo, Maggie Hamilton! 🎹
Holy Crap! Amazing that this exists. Who knew? What an amazing talent. Thank you for posting this amazing gem.
I was so lucky to see her do this in Chicago. Can't say I would be eager to visit through a false chiffonier with her, but she brought a lot of stature to the role.
I saw her at a DC matinee and she walked off with it by being very simple with great dignity - she's much more pulling things here. I asked the conductor of the tour about that, and he said, "Well, it was the end of the tour."
Magnificent performance. Who can sing like that today?
It was said earlier but this rendition gives me chills. Bravos!
So much for Mr. Sondheim's snarky comment about Ms. Hamilton ("She never had a liaison in her life"). Incidentally, I wrote this great hip hop musical about her life, but I was stuck for a title.
This is fantastic. Thank you so much for sharing.
So terrific to hear her in such a different kind of part.
"She's never had a liaison in her life" said Stephen Sondheim.
I just... can't. Simply amazing. No Gingold, of course, but... definitely my second favorite.
What a find!
I believe that there was supposed to be maybe two or three songs for the Wicked Witch of the West on The Wizard of Oz, but I believe that they never made it on the Final Cut of the movie.
I just wish we could have heard Margaret Hamilton as the Wicked Witch of the West to sing a couple of songs on The Wizard of Oz
I wish I had seen this. Too bad the balance is off. But still can feel her.
Also, Stritch wanted to top Gingold? Jesus Christ, in drag, couldn't top Hermione Gingold.
Angela Landsbury was wonderful in concert with this
I saw her in St. Louis
I saw this in Boston. I was only a teen, maybe I didn't appreciate her but she didn't seem totally right for the part to me.
I saw it in DC and she was very simple, and nearly walked off with it. This is at the end of the tour when she had gotten very mannered.
Hilarious that Jean Simmons was pissed off by Hamilton's success
Sorry that I can barely hear this.
Does she die at the end of the song?
No, she merely falls asleep. (SPOILER ALERT : She does quietly die at the end of the musical.)
Adam Lebransky bad manners
I thought Claire Bloom was nice in the role, with a surprisingly sweet voice.
LOL. She was late wasn't she haha
In person it was very dramatic. She always sang it this way. (There are a couple other records and they are the same.)
You can see that she comes in as soon as the clarinet starts. She waits for the clarinet, she is not late.
