We call it "jazz" but Monk basically invented his own form. Its why so few can play it. It requires throwing out everything you know about jazz and starting from scratch.
Masterful playing on a 'toy kit'. Most modern 'drummers' would burst in nervous laughter if presented with such a Setup...and told 'you're going to have to be impressive man' 'cos that's all we got.
I read from the notes on the CD that his own drum kit was still in transit. That was all he could drum up. He was surprised Monk would have him solo, but lucky for us he showed us his talent.

A piano teacher would say, that's all wrong! You can't go dancing across the musical universe visiting planets that haven't yet been discovered. The liquidity of creativity and a drum solo that launched a thousand marching bands.
Monks solos are variations on the songs main theme. That’s amazing in the sense of really breaking down the songs structure and playing around with it. The possibilities are endless as to what you’re able to explore and play.

My father instilled to me the love for jazz. He was a fan the best fourth: Monk, Ellington, Davis, Coltrane. Dad is gone but when I listening this guys I know that he is nearby. Honestly, only them Jazz I love so much that I don’t need another one. Monk is really fucking genius and have never been made a movie, was only 1 documentary film. 🖤🖤🖤
Those 4 are also my four favorite. The fifth being Mingus. I hope my daughters will one day write a comment like this under a jazz video. Much love to you and to your father.
I would say Rollins is better than Coltrane, and I would also add Louis Armstrong's name. But otherwise perfect list. And to the unacquainted I guess jazz is just a bunch of notes anyway, and to their ears it's gobbledygook.
I just learned about this amazing pianist through researching Don from Steely Dan's influences, and after listening to him and playing along with him a few times, I feel a connection to him. It's as if a supernatural force is expressing itself through him, and I'm learning to just let go.
I love Jazz. In Robinsdale, MN, in the '60s, the was a coffee shop that had an open stage. Mucicians with day jobs came in and jammed. Pure genius. There are those who add notes to a composition. Then there are those who remove notes from a composition. And still there’s Monk who removes notes and adds selective silence between each note. He chose 1-2 notes per chord. A lot harder than most know.
It's pretty amazing when you see this live ... as a drummer, I'm inspired at how Ben Riley is doing so much with so little... I noticed a tom against the wall, so it's by choice! Bravo!

It’s sounds so wrong but exquisitely right
Charlie Rouse as well. Seems like every time I'm like, "that sounds like...", I look it up, and sure enough...🤷🏽
Drummer is 🔥. I love the simplicity of his kit in first part of the video.

That drum solo at 8:50 is enrapturing!

Bro, when Charlie Rouse is playing such a diatonic solo you just KNOW Monk is cooking up some advanced fire in response.
the first funkpianist long before funk even existed. groove. timeless. pioneer of r&b.
I hear where Bernie Worrell got that be-boo funk from. Blessing to him and Monk.
Wrong. Check out Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington from 1926, both doing funk infused music long before the genre became officially recognised.

Still mind bending stuff in 2022. Now imagine this almost 60 years ago. Would have been world shattering for many.

Hans Teeuwen hahahha i love it ! Lets grab a drink someday Hans where u at ?😄💥👌
yes, but do you finally appreciate your aunt's genius now, too?
I think Monk and your aunt would have got along just fine ...
I think about your aunt when listening to this.
I love how you can hear the melody so clear in his solos
Yes and Rouse was so adept at exploring those unique melodies on the horn
Monk would dig that! He always told his musicians to play the melody when in doubt. Made for some great heterophony.

Someone else that hears the family guy theme in the first song?
I was just about to write that
@americadeserved9-11covid6It wouldn't be surprising, as Seth McFarlane is a jazz fan.
I love how groovy and minimalist the rhythm section is, both during accompaniment and solos.
this makes me feel human. thelonious is my hero. what a genius.
I concur. He is my hero too !*****
Sorry he's my hero but we can share
I love how even Ben Riley carries the melody through his solo
Loved how he goes off on a little dance during the solos.
Genial
I love how Monk and Charlie Rouse understood each other, musically speaking. Great Quartet!
if you listen to Rouse in other contexts, you can really see how he adapted his style to fit Monk's music!
Can you think of any one who can play Monk's piano like Monj?
Larry Gales was a monsters on the bass
A piano teacher would say, that's all wrong! You can't go dancing across the musical universe visiting planets that haven't yet been discovered. The liquidity of creativity and a drum solo that launched a thousand marching bands.

Read Thelonius Monk by Robin Kelly - describes every gig and his whole life. Excellent book!

The bass and drum solo on Lulu's Back In Town are really good. They don't try to overcomplicate things and keep the groove going.
The advantage of such an essential drum set, is that the groove is all you got.
if you couldnt swing, Monk would throw you right off.(and out the band)
They were there to provide dance music for Monk 😀
