It is advisable not to build structures infront of the Airfield’s Runways-
Build your Airbases with the runways facing the open frontlines; while support structures are to be built behind the Airbases…
*You may build defenses at the at the side of the Airbase’s Helipad for added protection😁

I’ve been able to add some mods but maps and custom missions aren’t going in for some reason

For mods, you can download most of them from GenLauncher, and for mission maps, you just need to put them in the Generals Zero Hour Maps folder in the documents, and then you can find them in the Unofficial maps inside the mod that you want to play.
