"Waste not, want not." was another common saying back in the old days.
We just bought a house, and its just my partner, my dog, and I. We were only able to afford a small 900 sq ft, 2 bed 1 bath home, but it is more than enough space for us. With a good, functional layout its perfect, but all these shows on HGTV make it seem like bigger is better.
Stop watching HGTV. It creates discontentment.

I've been making sure we do not waste food. It really does stretch the food budget
In my mid 40s(wish I’d started earlier), I started using lessons that I learned growing up(not wasting food,no credit card debt,etc). Before I’ll buy a new container,I look around the house for a container that I can repurpose or I’ll put decorative contact paper on an Amazon box. I’m happy that channels like this are inspiring others
As a kid, I didn't appreciate what my grandparents were teaching me enough. Then one winter when life got tough, Bam! All those life lessons and early implimented knowledge came in very handy and I now understand and appreciate it all.
Honestly, no kid does. No kid has the mental capacity to appreciate such things at such a young age. Neither have I. Please don’t beat yourself up about it. Our brains grow as we (physically) grow.

I dont use dryer sheets or fabric softener. Seems fine to me. I like homemade iced tea
Fabric softener is bad for your clothes and your washing machine anyway, so win-win.
Growing up I ate beans so much… Lima, Navy, Pinto, Great Northern beans with Jiffy corn mix. Mom would cook and we would have them at least two days…. McDonald’s was a treat on alternate Fridays … My parents bought a multi family building and saved for a down payment for another house without selling the building… Dad said to me “Always pay yourself first no matter what if it is $25, put it in a bank away from your checking account each pay period and forget about it. The money will grow
Every year I read the Little House on the Prairie Xmas story to my grand daughter where Laura only got a stick of candy & a doll for Xmas. It leaves a big impression of how little they had in those times.
I loved that episode and used to play it for my children who are now adults. I think I’ll play it for ten and my grandchildren this year
Usually grandma was home, cooking ALL the time.
All true I am wearing clothes I bought at least 10 years ago if it doesn’t have a hole in it I am wearing it same with shoes I will wear for 3 years before buying new ones

I never knew that we didn’t have a lot of money until I started comparing myself to other kids. My parents did a lot of these things. We would have fun going to the park, camping in the car, eating the same foods during the week until payday and only drinking tea and water. We would get clothes from the thrift store but to us it was just a fun shopping trip. These are great money saving tips sometimes coming out of survival. Although I make a good amount of money today I still keep in mind these tips. Loved the video!

Yes. Reducing food waste is a big one for me. Tightening the food budget even more now.
I agree with that last tip. I live in a fully detached 3 bedroom, 1 full bath, 2 half bath house. Its a little bigger than what would be considered a "starter" house in the 90's. Its a single door garage and it needs work done on the front walk way, desperately. Point is, people wouldn't know I have money until you stepped into my house. I'm not rich by any means, but I generally have around $3,000 in my bank account bi weekly before I pay bills. I am able to cover all my expenses, Invest $500 minimum per month, deal with just about any logistical emergency related to my fully paid off 2018 used car or house and pay for the things I enjoy...Which is generally a couple of hundreds dollars per month on new video games and TV subscriptions. Granted that's not exactly as cheap as playing cards, but $200/ month on entertainment isnt that bad in my opinion.
I don't live a lavish life. That is to say my car isn't a high end vehicle, I don't go on vacations, music festivals, heck even the movies. I rarely eat out or go out for drinks after work. However, I am able to keep myself entertained while going to work consistently and not hating the fact I have to go. If I find ms or mr right, I'll be able to take them out on one heck of a date, that I'd venture a good portion of the population would go into debt to do.
The last one was funny. Our house has 140 square meter and I consider it too big. After all - we have to heat it and I have to clean it.
I gave My TV away and I don't miss it. My TV and Streaming is RUclips.

1:00 I've read that a HUGE reason for this is because it's much more difficult to get to the grocery store than it was back in the day (and still is in places like Germany, for example.) This is because the walkability is so low that you have to drive to the store, and most people only go once or twice a week instead of being able to say, "I want to make stew tonight. Let me go get the fresh ingredients and use them today."
We’re shopping 2nd hand for Christmas this year.
Most of my family would be grossed out if I shopped second hand for Christmas, I don’t have a problem with it !🙂

I grew up in a 1500' square foot house, with 5 siblings and my parents. I always shared a room with my sister. We played outside, so we never felt crowded.
This information is amazing. I am extremely frugal, and am downsizing and decluttering my life.

3:53 on this one in a lot of areas it’s near impossible. When I was a kid there was SO MUCH to do for little to no money, so many places to hang out, etc, but a lot of these things just aren’t around anymore. And honestly it’s quite heartbreaking cuz these were often spaces that were very mixed as people from all over the community would come hang out and just have fun.
Differences between our grandparents day and now is mothers stayed home with the kids to cook fresh meals. No takeaways, not ready meals. I know there were some tv dinners at some point. And because there was only 1 wage earner, they had to be frugal. Also no credit cards or buy now pay later. If you didn’t have money, you went without.

Just because you can do something doesn't mean you should.
The home size one is huge! I can’t believe the size of houses people see as “normal” nowadays. I’m building a 1,500 sq ft house and everyone keeps saying it’s small. I’m like huh? It seems like a good size to me.
Some people look down on me because my house is only 750 sq ft. They are living paycheck to paycheck in their bigger houses, and I'm the one laughing with extra money due to a cheaper mortgage. I think 1,500 sq ft is a decent size (I grew up in a 900 sq ft house with 7 other people) People's perception of what is considered a small house is wild these days, eh?
I have a 700 sq ft 2 bed condo. Definitely not a fancy one, but I already have more space than I need and therefore have more stuff than I need. I pay a lot in HOAs, but my maintenance is cheap, easy, and I can clean the whole place in 30 minutes. My utilities are low, and it's easy for me to pack up and leave for the weekend without much fuss. There are some tradeoffs for sure, but even if I had a standalone house this size, I don't foresee myself needing to size up without some serious life changes.
Yes, homes are way too big nowadays. I only see older homes that are smaller.
