Beckenbauer was one of the giants who shaped the modern game. During his NASL days I went to see the Cosmos practice when they were in town and got to meet one of my football heroes. I was a lucky kid as over the years I met also met Cruyff when the Aztecs were in town. Both giants took the time to say a few words about training hard and practicing your weaknesses that stuck with me throughout my time playing a range of sports.
Because of him I played as a Libero with the number 5 in the youth teams. I loved that role so much, almost like a defensive quarterback. I always thought that role had died out over the last 20-30 years of tactics development, 4 back line etc. But there definitely are great CBs that Interpret their role a bit like that, when their team plays a high line and build up play needs to come from the back 4. It's really a wonderful role.

Stones moves from right back to right central midfield when they have the ball. There's nothing free about that, it's an instruction.

He was - no defender - actually he was a - "Libero" - BUT he was a one of a kind "Libero" because his position wasn´t part of the defence line as "usual Liberos were securing the defence line" BUT his position was in the midfield in front of the defence line as a sort of "Build up player who distributed the ball in a genuis way due to his astonishing ball technique = the ball "glued on his foot" and especially his passes played with the outside of the foot were legendary + "Libero just for the midfield = "which was unique to him" - and again he was not a "Libero for the defence" which was the usual "Libero role" - he had total freedom according to his position on the field so he was never marked by the opponents because that would had opened the field if someone had marked him so he was always free and unchallenged to get the ball and he even joined the attacks = "That is no defender" - but - "Basically a second play-maker like a Nr10 but positioned behind the actual Nr 10 play maker who is positioned behind the strikers"
That calling him a "defender" makes me crazy = "This Brit doesn´t understand his actual role on the pitch obviously when calling him a Defender" - No German would never ever dare to call Beckenbauer a "Defender"...he never tackled or slide tackled which is what defenders do..after every game his dress had not a single piece of mud on it...I´m old and I´m actually saw him play live in my childhood and he was never "defending" but always just securing the midfield + initiating attacks and even joining from time to time the attack...

For me personally as an old centre half, Beckenbauer and Mooro were easily two of the greatest players of all time... they both clearly demonstrated how games/tournaments and seasons are won primarily from defence!
