- LLYT here, this video helps answer the common turtle pet owner question: Can fish live with my pet turtle? Check it out!
In this video I try Rosy Red Minnows and Goldfish!
In Part 2, I try Convict Cichlids and Sucker Fish! - • Can Fish Live with You... - Животные
Several reasons this didn’t work out. The tank for one is to small for even the turtles much less adding fish. There is almost no where for the fish to hide or get away from the turtles. And if ur gonna try fish with ur turtle it’s better if you only have the one turtle. However it does partly depend on the individual turtle.
i have one turtle it those well with our 3 year 3 fishes
The fish were way too small, They could easily shallow most of them whole
Non of that matters we have had a couple yellow bellies... we have a hatchling now... and have a dozen of goldfish feeders and had a pleco sucker fish... our yellow belly(Ralphie) just destroyed the pleco which was twice his size... our yellow belly is the size of a quarter...
And he is in a 65 gallon tank with sand floating docks and vegetation... and wood
I have a red ear slider and I got her minnows to eat and she ate 4 of them and then became friends with the last three. She could care less that they are in her tank and from time to time I see her mimicking them. It’s the most wholesome thing I’ve ever seen
Aww that sounds amazing! Thanks for sharring.
I have a yellow belly slider. HE EATS EVERYTHING.!!!! I feed him feeder fish tho. Lol. I have put sooooo many plants and he eats them all. I have put moss balls in there and he ate them. He is for sure a serial killer.😂
Ha! I hear ya. Yeah I don't use any plants anymore, turtles like to try EVERYTHING!
Yeah I tried fish as pals and they ate 2 dozen in one day. Tried plants and they ate them too. I tried to put romaine lettuce but they ate that then the aquatic plants too. So now there are rocks and wood.
i swear my turtle do the same
As he talks about aggression at 7:25 all I can see is one turtle trying to bite the other lol
lol
I got 5 feeder minnows and 5 goldfish, specifically for my yellow belly slider to eat. One year later they’re all still alive, and after seeing she wouldn’t eat them, I’ve added different kinds of fish and started a nice community tank. I guess my turtles a vegan 🤷🏻♀️ lol
Lol wish I could say the same the few yellow bellies my wife and I have owned love goldfish... and our current turtle just destroyed a 15 dollar common pleco in under 24 hrs of owning the fish lol
Lol
All my turtles do well with rosy minnows but the key has been to add a couple dozen at a time to diffuse aggression and give them some durable plastic plants and rocky caves as hiding places. You can also put them in a clear plastic container with enough small holes to allow water circulation for a week or so until the turtles lose interest and then release them.
That's a good idea. I'll need to get a bigger tank if I am going to put more hiding places in it. Thanks for the advice!
Yo that's smart as fuck Def going tk try the fish in a bottle trick 🤘🏻.
Mine do well with Guppy's and Gourami's, but they love to eat shrimps.
@@bjrn-olleolle3141 my albino, snow red eared sliders and albino pink belly sidenecks all do well with fancy tail guppies however the albino pink belly sidenecks started out going after guppies but currently they do not even bother going after them.
Yes they can my fish swim with my turtles all time it just gotta be perfect timing I did it as they grew up together
Yeah it really just depends on circumstances.
Thanks for that I have been wanting a baby turtle but I wanted to add two Ryukin goldfish and I was worried they would want to eat them I mean they are babies but they could try right 😂 any other advise would be helpful
@@coolgal13 I would not recommend housing goldfish and turtles together, they’re both VERY big waste producers.
And this specifically goes for sliders due to the fact that they are capable of out maneuvering some species of fish: and eat it. 🥲
Go for something smaller and agile like Zebra Danios, Cory Catfish, or Convict Cichlids as they can defend themselves pretty well.
As for the goldfish, if eaten, can be very dangerous for the turtle if eaten since they produce thiaminase.
Maybe going for a musk or mud turtle may be more safer, since I don’t think they’re great at catching fish in general.
True I have a musk turtle got it a few months ago and it’s doing fine. Musk turtles are slow swimmers so that is good. And it was a baby hen I got it. I have cichlids, barbs, sharks, gourami and a chinese algae eater. You just need to get the right breeds of fish for example no long tail fish, no slow fish.
@@coolgal13 Not gold fish. You can’t get long tailed fish it will get devoured you need to get fast moving fish no long tails.
I got my two red eared sliders feeder fish . They’re all friends 😭
Then ....Why are u crying?
@@therock3393 feeder fish
My wife has a turtle and because of that I have now gotten into loving turtles. Your channel is helping me learn so much so I can help care for her beloved red ear and musk turtle. Thanks!
Your tank is no where near the set up you need in order to house fish with your turtles, it's all open space of course the fish didn't stand a chance 🤦🏼♂️ 💯
U don't know shit kid
My turtle never are his feeder fish...he had to have them as pets...
Yeah me also
Same lol
your turtles are in a jail box the tank is way to small for the size they are and your oppressing them
Completely agree
🙄🙄
I'm sure he knows this already
There are turtles in much worse conditions they are are fed alive/cared for properly so please get a grip😂they don’t look stressed or unhealthy
You post about shoes and knock off ps4 controllers chill
You need cover for the fish and enough room. I have one large slider in a 125 gallon with a baskingcarea the size if a 40 breeder with african cichlids...no problems for years. You have to have cover and things like fake holy rock so the fish have a safe place to rest. It is unfair to put fish in a tank with no cover! Those fish were chased until they were exhausted.
Great video love ur channel don’t stop !!❤️
Dude I love this video. Gave me the exact info I wanted/needed and it was presented in a unique and memorable way. Thank youuu
Glad I could help! Thanks!
Hey, I have three red eared sliders myself. I was wondering if I could ask you some questions for advice
I have 6 2” goldies with my 1 5” yellow bellied slider. The turtle was about 2” when I put him in with the fish which were the same size. I’ve tried some Poe is but the turtles ate them all. I’ve put a couple crustaceans in also and they didn’t last either.
2 years ago I had 9 Goldfish sizes 7" to 9" .
Someone gave me a baby turtle 🐢 and put it together with my fish.
The turtle bite them to dead. All of them died and others disappeared 😔.
My turtle now is about 3 to 4 years old. A week ago I put 4 Zebra Daniels with her. So far they are still ALIVE!!
Good luck zebras! Yeah, unfortunately you never know what your turtle is going to be feeling about fish in their tank.
Do you need to clean up the driftwood, rocks, etc. Because my turtles are living in a plain tank with a basking area.
I found that sand and driftwood are great for turtles because they do not collect lots of waste. The turtles move both around so the poo is kicked up and the filter can do what it does best.
Yes you do need to clean them before putting them in the tank. Woods are cleaned buy boiling them in water and the rocks can be cleaned up with a brush.
I'm surprised your turtles don't fight each other. We had two in a tank and one tried to kill/mate with the other- we had to separate them.
Funny you said that, Moses started biting Harold incredulously, Moses has been separated because that is the only option I have, but more opportunity for more videos now! Stay tuned...
I have 2 red ear sliders and I have fish in the tank too. What I noticed is when I add new fish the first 4-5 days are the test period lol. If they survive past those 4-5 days then the turtles leave them alone after that.
Yes I agree with that, you get a very good idea after a few days. Thanks for the comment!
I think adding more decorations and places for the fishes to hide would help them live longer and maybe separating the turtles
A summary of the whole video: Today we're gonna kill some fish for the sake of entertainment.
Well that my friend is a glass half empty kind of a view. Fish are a common source of food for turtles (that includes pet turtles). This video is more about what fish are most likely to survive a turtle's reign of their tank. In the end though, they are food and the turtles love an active snack as enrichment.
For people saying his tank is too small, that’s his feeder tank. Not their actual home.
Funny intro turtle and fish
I usually just overwhelm my turtle by adding 24 or more goldfish at a time and add more every 2-3 weeks. Its a snack for the turtle and also help him get some exercise as he chases them. I had one last 6 years it was actually bigger that the turtle before it died.
Goldfish are bad for turtles
Gold fish make the tank sooo dirty, they can also make ur turtle sick if it eats them too much. The turtle may get obese. Goldfish are fat
I would stop that IMMEDIATELY!!!!! Goldfish are very bad for turtle health when they eat them. It can cause them to get very very sick
We have two turtles in our backyard pond and they are living peacefully with our 8 goldfish. They also have alot of space so thats probably one of the reasons why
My dream is to have a backyard pond! I have moved two of my turtles into an 100g indoor turtle tub. They are living peacefully with GFs now!
Thanks! I needed this.
I love this video 😆
My RES has 4 (possibly 7) roommates:
1 Polypterus senegalus (he’s around 15cm/6”)
1 Sewellia Lineolata
1 Siamese Algar Eater (C. Siamensis) ((Used to be 4 but the other three didn’t develop survival tactics fast enough.))
1 Red Swordtail (X. hellerii) ((my dad breeds these, and once they show signs of being too aggressive, my RES gets a new roommate :P
The last 3 are shrimps, they were tiny and see-through when I got them and thanks to plenty of potential hiding spots I don’t know if they’re alive or not.
These current fish has been living with my RES for the last 2 years and they’re certainly comfortable together. No signs of aggression towards one another.
Harmonious :)
That’s great! It really comes down to the first week I found, if the fish make it that long they are lifers ;)
My fish and turtles are fine together. The fish are on the bigger side. And they chase my red eared slider away
They can’t even swim without touching each other plz get them a new tank or separate them
I tried not to laugh at this 😂😅
Right no one should listen to him because he has three big turtle in that tank it’s too little for them
I have a beta fish living with my turtle they are very friendly with each other
Wow that's cool, I have never seen that before!
Betas have a toxin within their bodies if your turtle does eat him. Most tropical fish do have toxins, fatty or unhealthy but there is 3 fish that do not. I disagree using feeder goldfish in this video as if someone researches, goldfish have toxins that overtime, shortens the turtles life span.
Come on man. Rosie's? Feeders? I have Parrot Cichlids, Oscar's and Bluegill with my turtles. You need big fish the turtles cant eat. Your tank is completely inadequate for your 3 turtles. A 125 with those 3 turtles would still be too small.
egresk1 you know they could still bite them 😑 slowly but surely they will murder yo big fish. Also k agree with the small tank for 3 turtles isn't enough space for them lol but hey I'm sure he'll upgrade.
I used to have a pet catfish that was like 1 inch and he grew to like 5 inch and he killed all the fish in my tank. The catfish was so aggressive and even growl I forgot what kind of catfish it was.
Wow!
I’ve 2 hatchlings in a 4 foot pool. That’s some straight up torture do the right thing and upgrade them.
I got feeder fish goldfish and after 20 1 is still alive and about the size of a bream. He’s loving life right now
7:28 did you notice?!
😂😭
Turtle bit it tail
He needs to separate them!!! ☹️
Plecos get decent spines as they get bigger which can injure the turtle internally
U should have a bigger tank for ur turtles.
I watch this vid to help maself to sleep. I'm Effed. Love ya man. Haha. Just subbed.
I keep Tiger barbs with my turtle, she'll catch one once in a while but they're too fast for her for the most part.
Minnows don't last a few days.
No fish is going to survive in a tank that size when you have 3 good sized turtles. that are too big for that tank. I’ve got 2 small turtles in a 75 gallon tank & we have tons of minnows.
Ok Karen

Can you do a video on your normal feeding. Just curious to see how and what others feed them
ur not hyper aware..lol. 7:34 Ur turtle back there giving his tank mate the business
Fair! Although while making this I was in the planning stage of creating a turtle tub for Moses because she was getting nippy. She was really showing off in this video, poor Harold. They are separated and happy now though! Thanks for the comment.
Minnows?! Yea right! They are just as susceptible as the other fish you put in the tank. They are fast but somehow my turtle was able to catch every last one I’d put in his tank.
I love turtles, I also love Goldfish, that was merciless not a treat, not about money
i have 2 male turtles living with a whole family of guppies various ages, my theory is babies that survive their parents will likely make it, my two turtles may eat some babies, i dont know, but the grown guppies have been fine
Cichlids make a good tank mate I have one with my painter turtle in a 40 gal it's just a plain African and they play it's pretty cool.
Nice! I plan on getting a 40 gal for Harold (the smaller RES). If you notice in the video Moses likes to nip him, so he is going to be separated. But that is a great opportunity to try cichlids. Thanks!
Except the Algae eaters. Mine bit the head off of my first one and hasn't bothered the other one yet. But all other fish and crustaceans are gone get ate. I bought 2 minnow and 2 goldfish a couple of weeks ago; I got 1 of each left 😂😂
what filter could you recommend for a terrarium with an adult iguana
I put 3 goldfish in with my baby painted turtle. Was only a inch shell size maybe. Same with the fish they were all small. Theyve all been friends since🤣.
Aw, fantastic to hear! I hope it stays that way!
its cruel to keep 3 turtles of that size in such a tiny tank. should probably upgrade the tank before spouting "rules for thee, not for me!" content.
That definitely doesn't look like a 75 gallon tank, did you get confused with liters? What are the tank dimensions?
It definitely is!
There was two minnows that survived
Ni
Yes my red eyed grow up with fish a LG eater since it was a hatchling I have goldfish in the tank with the one and a half year old red-eared slider and he does not try to eat the three goldfish in the tank if they grow up together it can be done I would put a algae eater in the tank with a hatchling and let them grow up together and they will not eat the fish
That tank is way too small for the turtles alone, if you add more they’ll get territorial and attack. Also if you just keep the turtles fed and in a comfortable environment the turtles will not be interested.
The only way to have fish and turtles together is if the fishes are bigger than the turtles, meaning baby turtles. Btw, did you note that one of your turtles was biting the other turtle? You got a nipper. It may be related to the lack of space. You need a larger tank with plants for them to hide.
Yes Moses is a nipper, it is a recent habit that she has started. I will most likely separate the two turtles as I cannot get a larger tank. I can get another smaller one though. I have had some luck with goldfish that are smaller than the turtles. But I may have just got some epic goldfish. Thanks for the comment!
@@LongLiveYourTurtle Well, if Moses just started to bite the others recently, may be related (or not) to her reproductive cycle. They get territorial, both females and males. Are the other 2 girls?
I got 3 nippers and I needed to separate the big one but they are still babies...I'm planning for a big thank for the community but let's see.
@@albertsrour8687 I have read that could be the case! Thanks for the info! Moses is the only female. I still want to separate Harold... Interestingly Moses has no interest in Crackers (the yellow belly) so I will keep those two in the big tank. But yeah big tank all the way! Good luck.
That tank is too small for thoses three big turtles
My baby turtle tried to ate my gold fish yesterday 🤦♀️🤦♀️
I actually did not think of feeding my turtles with live fish! Good exercise for them!
Yes they can be! I would avoid feeding rosy red minnows and goldfish though as they can be unhealthy for your turtle. Livebearers like guppies or platys or similar are perfect because you can breed them yourself in a 10 gallon without any effort and feed them to your turtle.
@@LongLiveYourTurtle it's not cheap, but turtles actually like to hunt for fish. So, technically it provides them with more natura habitat/behavior. Few $$$/year in live fish will not be as bad. True, if breeding could be easy, that is definitely idea. Guppies is my answer 😊
not enough space and know where for them to hide
i have 2 turtles in a 100 litre tank and have fish and they are fine ive lost 3 fish in 3 months. i originally had 12. just added 12 more and will see how they last but so far so good : )
I have a few Cory catfish in my tank with my red
I still have regular feeder fish with my turtle and I have a red ear slider
That's great! Moses is the one that does all the fish in, if she was separated I think fish would thrive.
Woah, ur turtles got huge fast, they need a bigger tank, even though you did so much work for the basking platform. ;( and I 100% know what the answer to the fish question is, lol. They love eating them
Your turtles can live together? My two boys started killing each other when they were sub-adults so I had to get each of them their own tank
They could… but at around this time they actually started bullying each other and I had to separate them.
Hey, I followed your tutorials and made the above tank basking area. It looks really good but it’s been 2 days and they won’t go up. Anything you recommended?
Had the same problem my turtle NEVER basked... still doesnt but hes a snapper so i guess he doesnt really need to? Who knows
your basically keeping a 4 inch wide goldfish in a half gallon bowl
btw I like the video other then the tank
My 2 year old RES has been living with four rainbow sharks, plecos and an Oscar for a year.
Cool! Glad they all get along :)
My one turtle in biting the other turtle and snatching out his nails....so please advise me in this...
Yes, if you notice in the video Moses was doing that to the smaller red-eared slider (Harold). I will have to separate them unfortunately. It is a new behavior and is stressful for Harold (obviously).
@@LongLiveYourTurtle exactly my big turtle does to smaller one....I also have a red ear slider.....thanks for the advice
I have 10 fish living with my turtle and none have gone yet. However my turtles a little different i bought him at a flea market he was missing an eye so lil buddy only has 1 eye which of course makes him less of a predator than he is however he does every now and then chase the fish before losing sight and sometimes doesn’t mind them they swim across him look at him and he just looks back. One big thing keeping my fish alive is the room alot of space and decorations as hiding spots. I have 4 buenos aires tetras 2 black mollies 2 platys and 2 little comet goldfish
Awesome variety of tank mates! Yes, this setup left little room for the fish to escape. However I have split the turtles up and they fish now stand a chance! (not minnows though) thanks for the comment and I am glad your 1 eyed turtle is doing well.
I’m get fish’s for my yellow eared sliding turtle thanks for the help
No problem 😊- here are some better options (in my opinion) ruclips.net/video/khi4Qy8_GaE/видео.html
Can glofish live with turtle
I have had a goldfish living with 2 smaller red eared slider for over 2 months now and they tried eating him a few times but so far has been unsuccessful. Hope that helps
He ate the fish
Bro 3 big turtles in that tiny tank no way
Fantastic video, super informative- thanks!
Thanks!
How do you deal with your turtles fighting with each other? I noticed in the background your turtle was biting at the other one a bit.
While I was making this video was about the time Moses starting getting aggressive with Harold. Once in a while harassment is OK but it started stressing Harold. So, I separated them. Got a 100 gallon tub for Moses. So short answer, separate them. ruclips.net/video/H8I33HL9MFE/видео.html
Long Live Your Turtle I have a female & male red eared slider and sometimes I notice the male nip at the females legs but I really want them to breed, any advice?
@@mastercommanderdragonsir679 I do not have experience in breeding but all I can suggest is get the biggest enclosure you can. That way there is no territorial aggression. Otherwise I would research what the optimal conditions are for turtle breeding. Sorry for the lack of advice here, good luck to you!
I think they need hiding stops to survive.
also i remember hearing goldfish have something in them turtles shouldnt eat and Plecos have spines on them to protect them, same as Cory cats, so not sure id get them just in case
Dude. Small tank u got there
I have a red eared slider. Female. We got her when she was a baby. Put two golf fish in with her and they were bigger then she. She ate the biggest gold fish about a week after we bought them and they were in a big tank. Lots to hide under and knuckles our turtle was so tiny. A year later and we had to upgrade our tank, due to knuckles getting bigger and her being so aggressive at trying to eat nemo. Nemo is twice her size and she has finally eaten her. So no more gold fish friends for knuckles. She’s to mean.
Happens! I actually got some goldfish for my indoor turtle pond and they are thriving! I think the turtles have officially given up on them and they will live, but you never know!
I also have cichlids and a turtle in the same tank
Cool! My convicts are doing great!
oscar with a medium sized turtle???
I would say you'd be taking a chance with that duo! Oscars are, by nature, very aggressive (and get big) so if you do decide to do that keep a very close eye on them and be ready to separate them if things get nasty.
@@LongLiveYourTurtle i tried but failed at the end....I kept oscars parrot and pacu with a medium sized Indian turtle and they eventually attacked the turtle every time ....
We got 6 fish that we got about 2 months ago, and our 2 red ear sliders love having them around
Excellent news! Sometimes it just works out ;)
7:25 to 7:32. Glad it didn't bite its junk off thats scary
I have turtles and fish living together and have been doing good. Yellow bellies no go. They don't give up. But best way to get fish and turtles together is get at least 20 gold fish. Most will not make it. No minnows. Let them together for two weeks most turtles give up within two weeks. After that you will see some nipping but they will do well. Then you can add more.
That is a great idea! It is really only Moses, the big turtle that gets them. If she gave up I would be in the clear!
@@LongLiveYourTurtle what type is your big turtle?
my yellow belly slider is perfecty fine with feeder fish
I did that today they didn't eat it and I got 6 of them and I have 2 turtles in the tank
My pet is a baby turtle but I wanna know what happens if you a fish with a baby
The baby will probably chase it! Fish are food. Either the fish learns to stay away or they will probably be food. Just be careful on your fish selection. You don’t want it to be dangerous to your turtle. Thanks!
Largemouth bass and red ear slider
Haha I’ll need a WAY bigger tank for that fish.
I did but did not need to watch this because I learned by alot of experience that they can not live with fish
I saw three surviving minnows
Three turtles in a tank of that size .. come on man upgrade them already

Those turtles are not even hungry, they just don't want to other turtles to have them.
