Not really worried about the defense, Penn just had a creative offensive plan and our guys didn’t play their best game. Fully believe Lupoi will have our guys right and tuned up.
@@losofn9525I didn't see that many trick plays. We just seemed like we were overly concerned with taking away Tyler Warren and it allowed the Penn State run game to feast
Tackling seemed to be an issue all night, especially twice on 3rd and long. Penn state BARELY makes the first down…if a Duck tackles them 2 yards shorter it would of been 4th down
Uptempo had our guys getting the call in late multiple times, as well as all around poor communication which led to several wide open players for Penn State. Everything you pointed out is exactly what I noticed watching the game live. You give Dan and Tosh 3 weeks to prepare and work on themselves i fully expect them to have this team back to playing like the top 10 defense they’ve been all season
It was a bit of a shock, but it's not a "major concern"... Is not ideal at all, but this is still an incredibly talented roster. We probably will ultimately be able to end up thanking Penn State for making this defense shrewder..... giving them a crash course on staying in assignment when there's a lot of misdirection. It's creatively a tough road to the national championship... It's getting tougher than it's ever been. But there's not a team on the schedule that Oregon doesn't have a solid chance of beating. That in my mind, they should at least be a very slight favorite over... Bring it! Toughest road to the championship ever... But you have to like the Ducks chances at least as much as anyones. Even with the extra hard bracket the number one seed got! 😜
Great points Spencer. it’s good to know the offense can carry the team when needed but I’d put the concern at a 6. Rewatching that game I see way too much reacting & hesitant linebacker/safety play in the run game. It showed up versus Boise, Ohio st & Purdue ran for too many yards as well. The team earning the bye is the best route due to the fact that the run defense can study & practice every single look they’ve been struggling against until it’s muscle memory to shoot ur gaps. Penn state has a good line but this was a wake up call Dan needed to see bc winning big can allow overlooking bad effort & technique. (Harmon should be running for getting another stupid flag)Which is really all it takes to stop a run game bc the ducks have the athleticism to do it. Line up right, know ur gaps, attack the ball & stop waiting while sealing the cut backs.
When you said that you wanted a tight end I immediately thought that I wanted that TE from Purdue. Good to hear you say that you wanted the same guy. They say that great minds think alike.
I noticed 4 things. Missed tackles, lost containment, tempo and communication in the secondary. If the flu was going around that certainly would affect missed tackles and not ready for tempo.
I like Bassa, but he seems to disappear in some of these games. Why isn't he making more tackles? You rarely hear announcers say his name. I appreciate that he is a leader & motivator, but like I said, he seems to disappear. Go Ducks! 🦆
I don't claim to be an expert, but he does seem to get caught up inside sometimes, leaving a cutback lane for the opposing RB. Bryce seems to be more instinctive, more patient , thus blocking off the cutback lanes the RB tries to bounce back through.
Agreed. I’ve been shocked that he & jacobs have not made more of an impact in the big games. Bryce has elevated his game & come rose bowl they must step up bc a lot of on field communication falls on them
The flu very well was going thru Penn State's defense...if you watch the ILB right before the ball is snapped on the play Sadiq caught his second TD the ILB is throwing up thru his facemask😅
Interior DL or whomever was on the stunt assignment to the inside has to be better crashing down or pinching the inside when QBs step up in the pocket...not doing so allowed Drew Allar to gain alot of yardage in crucial moments..in particular the play he scrambled to get them in the red zone that lead to a late PSU touchdown
Just sa the 2025 schedule release. To me, if there were any questions about getting a veteran quarterback or rolling with youth, this schedule plays great for a young quarterback. What would you say about that?
There was too much of a dramatic drop off for the defense for it not to be something health related. Me and my wife have been sick all week and others we know have also have been sick, there is a nasty bug going around town right now for sure.
I know he hasn’t hit the portal yet, rumors are he will but my biggest want from U$C is Zachariah Branch. He’s just too electric not to take and would be so good in Stein offense
Re: Bear Alexander: According to a friend in So Cal, Mr. Alexander has some concerns around being more of a "Me" guy rather than a "We" guy, but with Coach Lanning recruiting him when in Georgia, will have to rely on his judgement, always.
They don’t challenge because the ball was bobbled and he didn’t have full possession of the ball all the way to the ground and the ball was touching the ground. I’ve watched the replay up close and he never had full possession.
That FCS playoff is pretty good this year. Montana State our FCS opponent next year is about to play Idaho; who is going to end up 9-4, with losses to: Montana State(x2) 13-0. Oregon 13-0. UC Davis 10-2.
The key for success defensively i believe will be to take away the run game and make teams air it out. (None of the opposing playoff qbs are like penix last year) Besides Ohio st I don’t feel confident any team in the playoffs has the receivers to rlly give the dbs trouble if they fix the coverage busts over their bye. We know Dan is a defensive guy. I do trust he’s boutta go to work with the extra time & we’ll see a better defense come out in the rose bowl 🦆
I just wish we could play a complete game on both sides. 1 game defense wins then the next offense carries. Only great games were Washington and maybe Oregon. Those backs for Penn are monsters but not 200 plus’s monsters.
I rewatched Ohio st versus Penn state & the buckeyes had to time when to blitz drew allar bc the Penn state line is good & they do a lot of chipping from the tight ends while their rbs block too. So they do a lot of 2 man routes or 3 after the tight ends chip. This is probably bc their receivers aren’t great & need more time to get open & Warren is good at slipping the underneath areas after he passes off his block. Basically a lot of smoke & mirrors when they pass. Kinda reminded me of a more exotic 2010’s Stanford situation.
Spencer, why do our high rated linebackers always under perform? Why are our best LBs usually converted safeties or walk ons when guys like Jacob's and Jackson (or Sewell and Flowe...) seem to chronically under perform? It seems like the only position group that we have that works this way.
I'll defend Noah Sewell from now until the end of time, he was a stud. Flowe got hurt. Jacobs also hasn't always been 100% and got beat out by Bryce and Devon this year. Injuries the common theme
You mentioned the quality of B1G Championship announcers in your podcast earlier this week. An error they repeated was giving credit to #44 Teitum Tuioti leading two plays as fullback, when the player leading the way was actually #44 Zach Grace. Thought you may want to give a 'shout out' to a hard-working guy that should have been recognized... but was not. Wishing you the very best!
The announcers brought up that our front 4 had been in most of the game. This was our problem in 2014, why are the freshman not getting playing time to offset some of the snaps
But yet Georgia is known for defense and 2 games this season they gave up 40+ points and 30+. They have been terrible at times and have been burned a lot. I’m not worried about the defense. I’m sure with 3 weeks off they will get things back on track.
It’s definitely flu or sickness time in Oregon. I couldn’t imagine trying to play that level of football while being sick with the flu. It would make perfect sense why our defensive line couldn’t get to the QB. I mean having 10 sacks the previous game to only 1, or maybe Penn States front line is just that damn good. We will never actually know so let’s not dwell on it. Let’s look forward to the history we are about to make! Winning against Tennessee in the Grand Daddy of them all The Rose Bowl 🌹then play Texas and Show the world we better this year than the second highest ranked SEC TEAM and then show the world that we can Beat the highest ranked SEC team which I’m assuming Georgia makes it to the Championship Game but with Beck hurt, that might be a BIG IF
Last week the defense was $$!! 10 sacks and a do I sting performance against UW! This game they played well at times but relaxed when they got a lead. You could feel it when they went up 28-10 and again at 45-30. They’ll bounce back next game….imagine if both the offense and defense being their “A” games on the same game day! NOBODY can beat this team if the D from the UW game and the O from the PSU game show up together and play lights out like we’ve seen them both do! Scary!
Kicker is interesting Boyle could have a 7th year since he missed all of 2023 with an injury. Not sure if he's doing that. If he does, I imagine he's the FG kicker next year
The defense didn't show up and the offense carried them. What happens when the defense is counting on them and the opposing team has a plan to limit the offense? Every man needs to do his job this next game or it's going to be over. You need to recapture your pride and prove to the sports world you're not down and out or just a flash in the pan.
I'm not concerned. Our defense vhas been suspect against the run all year honestly. And against QBs that can run. So that didn't surprise me. But I also think Penn State had something to prove. So I'll give our defense a pass.
I'll keep saying this until I'm blue in the face. People are suffering from recency bias. Prisoners of the moment. This means nothing for Oregon going forward. Georgia 2021 Generational Defense gave up 500 yards of offense and 34 points the first time they faced a high powered offense. Alabam 2020 team (Nick Saban Defense btw) gave up 650 yards of offense and 43 points to Ole Miss. "Shutdown defense" doesn't exist anymore because the state of the game has changed so significantly. New rules, policies, and playstyles have been implemented over the last 20 years that benefit offense and hinder defense. It's 2024, not 2004.
