      Unless you're on a Fold in which you're gaining about 3 hours of battery despite going from a $2K phone to an $1100.

      they should start measuring the phones in the camera bump area, companies would start focusing on more than just cramming in components and making them impossible to repair...

      God please i swear, like whats the point of a 40 inch phone but thin without making it smaller? With how many companies make smartphones you'd think that at least a few would offer 5.9 inch devices (below premium priced too, tired of only expensive flagships getting a sub 6.7 inch screen for no reason) but nope. But also yeah why make it thinner without making it smaller? Ridiculous

    • @axethepenguin
      @axethepenguin 9 months ago +10

      @SaifKhanisaiff It’s a minor annoyance, usually I can’t be bothered to Google something like that, so if I see a solution while browsing randomly, I’d be happy to.
      P.S. Google is useless nowadays and searching something you don’t actually know the name of the issue of doesn’t yield results anymore.

    I don’t like how RUclipsrs are so inclined towards Apple that whenever some other phone company comes up with a unique thing they always try to degrade it and if Apple does the same, they praise it and kind of market it. I thought a few of them were different, but they’re all the same.

    • @zestycrumbs
      @zestycrumbs 5 months ago +26

      After coming from the iPhone Air review to this, I don't really agree, and I find Marques was pretty fair in both.
      His main complaint for both phones was the battery, and he voiced it equally in both reviews, even critiquing the Air's camera which he didn't do for the Edge. And his praise for their thinness was also nearly the same.
      I guess he did do a more cinematic intro for the Air, but this intro is also very memorable.

    • @ahmadqadri8067
      @ahmadqadri8067 5 months ago +52

      @zestycrumbs see the titles of both the videos for example. Starts this video by saying "Nobody asked for this" on the contrary mentions the Air's features and how Apple has rearranged the internals to achieve this form factor. There is a clear bias Marques.

    • @deadpooles
      @deadpooles 5 months ago +4

      @keithmdesign yeah, also stating that there are "trade offs". and always "builds" his text for iphones like: small issue vs kinda of big plus ("pick up tons of fingerprints but remarkably durable). with this way if you just structure your sentences good enough, every trade-off is good this way.

      While this is to thin and I never wanted it, I also don’t care one bit about flush cameras and wouldn’t want them any thicker than the ultra models already are. Battery life is finally good on most phones and without making them to thick and heavy.

    Every phone seems to have a massive screen + massive camera bump, which kinda spoils the effect of super-thin for me.

    • @makingretro
      @makingretro 9 months ago +7

      Yeah but you don't hold a phone by its camera bump, so the camera bump doesn't really count against the phone's thinness when you're using it.

    • @tragiclostgaming
      @tragiclostgaming 9 months ago +6

      A big point against camera bumps is fitting them into a normal sized pocked@makingretro

    • @woody-0751
      @woody-0751 9 months ago

      Also if you put a case on the phone, then the camera bump is cancelled out, and you still end up with a thinner and lighter phone/case overall.

      I think these phones will still sell quite well if the battery lasts for a day. There is no need to have a big battery if your going to plug it in at night with 30% left. People will like how futuristic it looks and how it feels in your hand. I think the comments on tech videos dont really represent the average consumer

    • @Freshbott2

      Engineers and designers who wanna push the envelope but themselves being phone engineers and designers, sitting in their offices with chargers everywhere, not grappling reality.
      Also marketers knowing they can come up with whatever standard they want to flog “X hours battery life” and let the customer assume what that means.
      What the world really needs is smallish phones. iPhone mini or slightly larger. The mini’s camera’s are just barely thicker than the rest of the phone, they could have just filled those precious mm with battery and it would protect the lenses from drops and it would never wobble. Which is probably the last reason; they can keep shaving it down for marketing, heaping the problem on to the customer knowing they’ll probably put a case on it.

    • @Velk901
      @Velk901 9 months ago +12

      Thin phones market really well to average people, but the real reason they likely invest in it is shipping costs. Thin phones have less materials and weigh less which means less shipping costs.

    • @Renigen
      @Renigen 9 months ago +1

      @-ThatGuy- I guess it's a preference. And the camera bumps themselves look stupid. Like, 10 years ago we were able to make thin phones with the cameras not poking out of the back, and now we can't? That's just lazy.
      Or maybe that's the companies way of conditioning us. Like, they probably think "They don't complain about these huge bumps on the back of the phone. I wonder what else can we get away with now?"

  • @MahHinMan
    @MahHinMan 9 months ago +52

    The thing with silicon-carbon battery technology is that silicon as an anode in the battery suffers from expansion/shrinkage issues when it undergoes cycling i.e., charging and discharging, leading to ~300% volume changes of the silicon anode which in turn causes fractures of the electrode. There are numerous ways adopted to solve this issue, yet none of them could really provide a substantial and sustainable solution to this problem. That’s why we have to look at the silicon nanostack tech from Oneplus with scrutiny and see if the battery can last long (how many years it can survive under normal use condition). And I believe that is also why no company has followed suit in the silicon battery tech yet..

    • @DavidJonSpem
      @DavidJonSpem 9 months ago +6

      They are smart enough to figure out solutions to this problems. It's just that Samsung wants to make the batteries themselves and they don't know how. Note 7 is probably the reasoning for this.

    • @MahHinMan
      @MahHinMan 9 months ago +7

      @DavidJonSpemActually it has been more than 10 years, in fact close to 20 years since research started on silicon-based battery due to its theoretical capacity 10 fold of commonly used carbon material, yet still no promising results come out of it to minimise the negative impact associated with Si electrode. We shall see if they can really solve it.

      For example
      lifepo4 batteries energy density was horrendous and not commercially viable with horrible low temperature performance
      Now they are practical for energy density and can go sub 10°c
      I know they've figured out the expansion issues or at least mitigate it for the typical life cycle of smartphones

The cons honestly aren't much of an issue for me. Its got a decent enough battery to get me through the whole day and I have a wireless charger at work and in my car. Having a 100× zoom was only really used as a party trick for me. Rarely did I ever actually use it. I loved the s pen but again rarely used it. This phone is kind of amazing for being this this. When i had an iPod touch I always thought why cant they just make the phones this thin. Now they can. Even thinner.

      They won’t even compete against each other though. S25 Edge is $1,100 and iPhone 17 Air is going to be $900. Of course S25 Edge has better materials (Titanium), speakers (Stereo vs Air’s mono) and cameras (S25 Ultra level 200Mp vs single camera on the Air), but due to the price and of course, iPhone’s popularity, iPhone 17 Air is going to sell much much much more than S25 Edge and be more popular. But still I’m glad they’re not leaving all the spotlight for Apple.
