    The Silver Spade
    Giant Power Shovel
The Silver Spade was a giant power shovel used for strip mining in southeastern Ohio. Manufactured by Bucyrus-Erie, South Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the model 1950-B was one of two of this model built, the other being the GEM of Egypt. Its sole function was to remove the earth and rock overburden from the coal seam. Attempts to purchase and preserve the shovel from Consol to make it the centerpiece of a mining museum exhibit for $2.6 million fell short, and the shovel was dismantled in February 2007.
    RIP

I live in Southeastern Ohio and I used to watch it work in Belmont County Ohio I drove coal bucket and it had to cross interstate 70 we got to remove all the dirt it put on the highway in order to cross just West of Belmont County in Ohio right around Cambridge Ohio. The bucket is steel in around Pope County South on I-77, between Ohio river, Marietta and Cambridge Ohio. Just the bucket you could park about 12 cars and 4 semis in it. And there was still Room To run around.

Largest machines in the world at the time and British !

I only discovered posts of The Silver Spade a few days ago. I was wondering if it was ever used to load the big haulers. Without any good perspectives against other equipment, I only figured it was too big to load, until I saw it here with the wheeled dozer, in the foreground. Half a bucket would bury a mining dump truck. An impressive machine. My favorite, so far.
