    couldn't be clearer. Have no idea how you did such clear POV video. Great design. Clever use of term posts. Love it. Very enjoyable to watch you work!

    Pleasure to watch you work. That's the best video set I've seen on making a rather clever low temp sterling. I had to sit and think about how the steel wool might act as both the regen and the displacement piston at the same time. Thanks for the detailed video. That's as well made as your example. Harley

    Nice video, good work. I especially like the fact that you get on and do and not spend 30 mins talking about what you intend to do like so many other videos on here.

    Lovely piece of engineering using everyday materials. I made a Stirling engine in metalwork class at school back in about 1965 when I was about 16. I must find out where I put it some day!

    So beautifully hacky/tweaky/household/DIY... Cans and steel wool! I love it.
    I can't tell you how many times I've made things with bondo or epoxy and aluminum foil!
    AWESOME!

    It was just a general purpose bathroom silicone sealant. If you're using a big fire, you can get high temp RTV that holds up well to the heat.

    Works off the temperature difference causing the air to expand and contract. You need water to keep it cool.

  • @dhavv
    @dhavv 12 лет назад

    hey thanks - i made one.... it runs great to improve it
    1) i insulated bottom of the can to store heat.
    2) i had to add more steel wool to get good fit and make sure it falls freely.
    3) diaphagrm was it tight - so kept it loose.
    wondering what else shold be done to improve efficiency???
    1) thinking to incerase width of cylinder
    please share your thoughs, coz eventually i want to run this without candels but on heat off light bulb.
    thanks.

  • @asshatnowhere159

    also the candles are there to provide heat to make the air expand and thus provide power. without the candles or a heat source, the engine would not run. thats basically its fuel.

  • @Ahennuit
    @Ahennuit 12 лет назад

    You have to watch at what position the displacer (ie. steel wool) is, rather than where it is going:
    If the displacer is in the upper half of the can, the air is in the lower, hotter part, so it expands and pushes the balloon up. When the displacer is in the lower half of the can, the air is in the upper and colder part, so it shrinks and the balloon is pulled down.

  • @ociemitchell
    @ociemitchell 11 лет назад

    the steel wool is functioning as a displacer. other videos on the theory of Stirling engines can explain it better than me. basically, it moves the air to the hot side or the cold side, which in turn makes the balloon expand or contract.

  • @cmsracing

    Great job! Best one on U-Tube! That crankshaft is going to take some practice! You did not however show how to make the templates for the hole in the side of the can, does it need to be a certain size and in a specific location? I can figure out the other one for the three legs on my one! :)

  • @sh1thawk96
    @sh1thawk96 12 лет назад

    this is great, but ihave a few questions about it. firstly are there any videos on how to wire this up to power something? does it need a fuel source (eg do the candles have to stay there or are they just there to start it up? and what could something this size power?
    are they legal?

    Hello, I'm trying to rebuild the stirling engine following the steps of your video, I have a problem to maintain the watertight chamber during movement of the displacer, can you give me some advice on what part do I need u
    special attention?
    again congratulations for the video

  • @dhavv
    @dhavv 12 лет назад

    great video. couple questions though
    1) i see you have displacer connected to connecting rod, but is your diaphgram attached to crank shaft acting like power piston?
    typical theoretically an engine has both ( displacer and power piston) in one cylinder - so just comparing to gain better understanding.
    thanks.

    I built an engine from these instructions exactly to specification. I couldn't get it to start and the water tank ended up leaking out into the heating chamber. I know the can was heating up because the bottom is noticeably blackened. Is there something that could have gone wrong that I missed?

    • @LokiScarletWasHere
      @LokiScarletWasHere 8 лет назад

      I'm not the guy who made the video but I believe I should be able to answer that. Yes, it would. I've yet to build one myself (been browsing different plans to start from) but the power piston (balloon) and displacer (steel wool) are connected to the crankshaft 90 degrees apart. Not only should its spin be sensitive to which end is hotter, but the engine should also be able to function as a heat pump.
      Edit: I could have the power piston and displacer backwards but the point remains. 90 degrees apart, direction-sensitive.

    Bonjour j'aurais une question c'est un moteur stirling Beta ???

    • @AlphaOmniscience
      @AlphaOmniscience 6 лет назад

      Basically, yes. Usually the beta has a piston in place of the latex diaphragm, and the arms would go directly to the flywheel without a camshaft. But I would say this qualifies. It is a single cylinder, single piston engine which typifies the beta stirling.
