Learn about the key components beyond instruments that are involved in process control loops. This video discusses the control system, also known as the distributed control system (DCS), that receives signals from instrumentation devices and processes them to send output signals to final control elements like valves. It also covers shutdown logic and how safety instrumented systems provide higher reliability for critical safety situations. Real examples are provided of using transmitters and shutdown valves connected to safety systems to protect downstream equipment.

what is the difference between SIS (instrumented safety system) and ESD emergency shutdown in the oil and gas industry and what are their respective standards 0:19

They are technically the same. Sometimes the shutdown system is called ESD, and sometimes it's called SIS but it is the same function. Sometimes also ESD is referred to the total shutdown of unit and not just a small shutdown by a SIF (Safety Instrumented Function). So it mainly depends on how they are defined within a project. For a process engineer, the most important factor is SIL rating as this can cause a great limitation when assessing the reliability of SIF functions.
