What i miss about ber months is the scent of the cold amihan wind rolling down the sierra madre mountains to our our place in san mateo rizal.... the mountains turn white because the talahib blooms that time... my uncles would bring us pirurutong from their kaingin in montalban which my lola will cook biko with .... oh such fond memories....
Filipinos celebrate Christmas so extravagantly that folks have to plan ahead. Thus purchases for decors stary around this time. And if one is decorating, why not keep it longer? The -ber months is also anticipated for the bonuses that tend to be given in mid-November. Based on my experience, preparations for the traditional church cantata start in the ber months.
My Lola would start by buying jumbo hot dogs which for grilling during Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve. It was time to start planning what to bring to our big family reunion potluck. We cousins would be required to perform for all the adults. We kids would get coins from our grand aunt who would host the reunion. Of course, every dawn we would wake up early to walk to the church in the city (20 km away) and attend Simbang Gabi. There were also kids who would come to carol.
Excellent video!!! I wasn't aware of the history behind the traditions. Thanks for this because there's not much on why we celebrate Christmas for 4 months. I'm using this information for my speech!
We Filipinos consider the start of the Christmas Season on the first of September because we love to countdown to something Big. And as a dominant Christian Nation where 90% are Christians, we are happy to know that the Birth of our Lord and Savior is nearing and we want to celebrate that coming day as long as we can. That is true love to the Faith and the Festive Season. We respect all Religious beliefs as we are all brothers and sisters. We do not have Thanksgiving, and we do not celebrate Halloween, though we honor the dead during that day, we do not really hold parties for Halloween. So the next Big Thing is Christmas. We don't celebrate 'Christmas' on September, we celebrate and honor the 'Countdown to Christmas' starting September, hence the term Christmas 'Season'. we celebrate the 100 Days of the coming of the birth of Christ. I don't find anything wrong about that at all, even from the beginning. And neither should anyone else. In fact, people should be proud of that mindset. We just celebrated 500 Years of Christianity in the Philippines. We have Masses Scheduled everyday, we have and attend Sunday Mass and watch Live streams of Masses held across the Nation. Do i have my decorations up now? Yes indeed. And i'm proud of it. Do we have a Nativity Scene? YES, its actually the center of it all. It makes us Happy knowing that the Most Wonderful Time of the Year is closing in. And what better way to celebrate it than to celebrate it as long as you can. And as far as i know, there is no Universal Law that prevents us from celebrating or honoring the upcoming Birth of our Lord early on and decorating our places with festive lights to commemorate and honor the upcoming holiday. it is actually good for our Mental Health as it provides us with the warmth and joy that the Season brings. And for others saying that it is only a Commercialisation or a Marketing Stunt made by corporations is a big NO. because Malls and Brands did not 'invent' this tradition, as Malls and Brands only respond to people's behaviour and interest. Just like when 'Back to School' is nearing and there would be a huge interest in buying School Supplies very early on. same with the Christmas Season. You are not forced to purchase or spend if you don't want to, but you are given the opportunity to freely immerse yourself in the Season if you must and if it brings great Joy and Happiness in Life. We never forget the reason for the season, that's why we celebrate it for a long time so that we are reminded of it everyday. We need to Respect this Unique cultural Tradition that we have. We are Happy with the Season. We are proud of our 4 months of celebrating the Birth of our Lord. Even the smallest things can make someone happy and whole. Happy Ber Months. 🌟🎄🙂
Hello po, maraming salamat para sa comment at explanation! I always knew we celebrate early, but as a kid who was born and raised in Canada, I was never told why.
Me a filipino kid that is11 yrs old and still asking my parents why do we filipinos celebrate Xmas early and i say It's wIeRD and THIS JUST ANSWER THE QUESTIONS :3
@KirbyAraullo, the chilling northeast monsoon wind is "Amian" in Pampango or Kapampangan while in Ilocano it is called "Angin ti Ammianan" (wind of or from the North) and Amihan in Tagalog..
Fil-am here! I always thought it was because mainland Filipinos did not celebrate Halloween and Thanksgiving, the more over commercialized, American holidays. I know they have more low-key Halloween spirit, and Christmas was more international. And the mainland Filipinos were like, “Halloween and Thanksgiving ain’t our thing, so let’s GET LIT MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!”
Hope you create more videos about Pre-colonial celebrations of different ethnic groups in the Philippines that may or may not survive today. Especially in Bicol.

Nice Story, putting a traditional twist to a modern day story :) Why do we start our celebration is Sep? Because, Radio stations started it, by playing Christmas songs earlier than usual, then the mass media reinforce it because of our reputation as a country that celebrates the longest Christmas season. It has nothing to do with our pre colonial ancestors. Amihan starts in November and ends in June of the next year not Sep. Harvest season in the Philippines is celebrated in May, not Sep. That is why most fiestas in the Philippines are in May. Harvesting season varies from region to region, although Sep is the 2nd crop harvesting season in central luzon but not celebrated like the fiestas of May. The celebration of Christmas season in September is a new phenomenon that probably starts in late 1990s to early 2000, and it was the mass media driven by commercialism who popularized this concept. I was born in the 70s in central luzon, and I remember that during that time, Christmas season usually starts on the eve of simbang gabi which is celebrated on the 16th of Dec; and ends in the feast of 3 kings (Jan 6 then become the 1st sunday after Jan 1). Radio stations at the time usually starts playing Christmas songs during this time, schools and home were usually decorated on the second week of dec , but in my highschool years we decorate our school on the first week of dec. During those period the Philippines is already recognize as a country with longest Christmas season, but we're not that crazy about "ber months" back then. There was even a debate on tv in early 90s if Christmas season should start 12 days before (due to the song 12 days of Christmas) compared to the Philippine 9 days of Christmas (start of simbang gabi). Also, after the Edsa revolution, some dj on a radio station think its funny or nice to play christmas songs after all souls day. Other stations followed suite, and not to be outdone every year they start playing christmas songs on the airwave earlier and earlier than the previous year. the 100 days before christmas countdown only starts in 1999 because of the coming of the new millenium, again popularized by mass media and became a tradition since then. Due to this millenium countdown, radio stations also started playing christmas song 100 days before christmas until again, one radio station think its funny or cool to start earlier than that.

I thought this idea of September having the early Christmas countdown and being considered as part of the holiday season, is a ridiculous Americanized, capitalist logic only modern day Filipinos use to justify its irrationality. But interesting you brought out the precolonial reason for this. However, most of us in the country already take it for granted. It's all about materialistic obligations such as Christmas gifts and decorating ones house for showing off.
I like that you gathered all these reasons while christmas is celebrated this long and this early in the philippines, but dude, minimize your hand gestures it's too distracting and annoying. Thanks!
Kami nagwowork sa shopping malls, we despise and hate September until December so much... Because instead of listening to vibrant, upbeat, joyous musics.... We're forced to listen to Christmas songs pa ulit ulit from September until First week of January (after 3 Kings celebration).
It is a true fact that the ancient Filipinos are believers and worshippers of our INDIGENOUS father BATHALA as written in the annals of Antonio Pigaffita that upon arrival in the islands of Zamal and Mindanao the people is praising their god by raising their hands to the sky and clapping it and proclaiming ABBA...a rare chance to reconnect to the Messiah in calling the father ABBA in the Garden of Getsemani on his prayer...if not that our ancestors are true believer of the Messiah but we lost that connection due to miseducation of the Spaniards and introduced the Gregorian Calendar instead of using our lunar counting of new moons or full moons...THUS IN BELIEF TO RECONNECT THE PAST AND PROBABLY NOT TO MISS THE DATE FILIPINOS OF TODAY IN GUISE OF COUNTING 100 DAYS WE CAN STAMBLE ON THE DAY WITHOUT THE MINDFUL EYES OF THE PRIESTS...JUST SAYING...
Not anymore (thanks to climate change) but historically speaking, typhoon season in the Philippines used to end or slowdown starting in September to October. This is both according to oral traditions, folklore, history, and back by scientific studies using data from as early as the late 1500s. 😊

They celebrate Christmas in Sept. So the parents can beg their kids for money and get extra money from them. The parents feel so entitled most of them don’t work even when they are able to. Why would you work when you can just guilt trip your children out of there hard earned money like leeches. Most of the children are so mentally scarred from childhood trauma caused by parents. It’s a vicious and sick cycle. That the younger generation is no longer doing. Children are nothing but ATM’s if you aren’t giving money they don’t want anything to do you with you. It’s the most toxic parenting culture in the world.

It seems that the Christmas season in the Philippines only ends a few days before the Chinese New Year. 😂 That's like 5 months.
