Wonderful, Leerburg!
I have trained my own Service Dog. It is a long road but worth it in the end for people who need them
Thank you for this
I sent in an application to Custom Canines almost three months ago and I hope I get placed soon! I’m excited.
Yes, you said "and civilians" but then concentrate on solders and it is admirable for you to help anyone with PTSD but I was turned away and turned away and turned away when trying to obtain a service dog for PTSD and mobility issues because I am not a veteran. Most people with PTSD aren't veterans but deserve service dogs just as much. All any program talks about is veterans and that's great but why not help non-veterans with PTSD? I don't understand. Anyway, I am owner training and its working out but damn it I deserve the same help as a veteran!
Leerburg is a family owned business with a history of military service. Jeff, as a veteran himself, felt that this is a worthy cause and wanted to show his support.
Leerburg Enterprises, Inc Understood and appreciated. Just wish these programs would also help & educate about PTSD non-veteran. I am a daughter of a veteran and appreciate all the help to veterans as many are struggling BUT no one seems to understand non-veterans can and do have PTSD and do need the help of a service dog as well and equaly deserving of one nor does anyone care to help a non-veteran with PTSD. This wasn't a comment to Leerburg but rather to the fact that "and civilians" was quickly said and glossed over and the huge highlight of veterans. It's just more of general frustratuon that when PTSD is in a sentence, in the media, "veteran" is alwaus there and no one seems to know you can have PTSD without being a veteran. And need a service dog.
My auntie works here
But there is no such thing as certification
Correct there is not an official certification through the AWDA. However, most service dog organizations develop their own certification standards in order to maintain accountability.
I think this is a wonderful organization but I have to tell everyone what I witnessed myself.
I was at a Holloween festival in San Antonio and a ex soldier had a German Shepard for his ptsd. This was at night with zombies and very loud noises going off. Strob lights and screams also. I saw his dog so afraid and want to hide when he kicked the dog so hard I wanted to cry. I think there should be more scrutiny as to who gets these dogs. This abusive guy should not own this dog or any dog.
Most organizations that train these types of dogs are pretty particular as to who the dogs are partnered with - they typically work with the handler and the dog as a team for a long period of time so that they know they have a solid working relationship. However, anyone that owns a dog can do the required training so that the dog can serve as a Service Dog.
