    50 Lessons for Tabla for beginner and intermediate-level students of Tabla
    Lesson 1 - Kayda 1 for Teen Taal (16 beats)
    Notes for this lesson are available here for download: bit.ly/2wCePig
    All lessons in this series arranged, recited, and performed by Dr. A. Pavan
    Videography by Santanu Chatterjee | Editing and captioning by Krissy Bergmark
    This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.
    I owe a debt of gratitude to my Tabla Gurus, Late Sri G Laxmiah, Ustad Shabbir Nisar, and Sri Rajendra Nakod, and many other great Masters of Tabla who have inspired and taught me along the way. None of this would be possible without them.

    Even though it's been 4 years since I left it for studies as parents said, i am planning to restart learning it. It's always so soothing to listen to the bol, the sound of tabla and the harmonium in the background. It reminded me of my days with my Guruji. Looking forward to other videos sir. Great work you did here

    This is so sad that you stopped giving each of your(edit) lessons, Guruji. I belong to a not so rich family so I can't afford to pay for my tabla classes. My friend used to play tabla and when he was about yo buy a new one, I asked him for the old one and he gave it to me, and started taking classes from the internet.
    It would be really helpful if you please continue your classes again on RUclips, I'll be really really grateful to you Guruji , even I am now because I got to learn so much from all of your videos 🙏🏻

      Thank you very much for the kind words. Please do spread the word among other tabla enthusiasts and learners. If you work on the lessons in the prescribed sequence you will do very well. Just work though one completely before moving on to the next. These days most students are impatient and want to jump to the relas that they can play fast. I hope you don't fall into that trap.

    Dear Dr. Pavan, first of all I would like to thank you heartfully for the precious Tabla knowledge you are sharing with us. I live in Hamburg / Germany, unfortunately we do not have a single proper Tabla teacher here. So I try to learn on my own with your lessons. Can you please explain us/me following:
    1. Is it a "must" to memorize the theme of the Kayda and all Prakars of the Kayda? Or do some player read from a sheet when they perform the Kayda in front of the audience? (ok, maybe this is a silly question :-))
    2. Which is the traditional way / scheme for playing a Kayda? How many cycles of the Theka should be played before the Theme? How many times should be played the Theme after Theka? How many times should be played a Prakar? What about one cycle of Theka between the Prakars?
    3. Could please make a video to show us how the whole Kayda has to be played?
    It would be great to know
    Thanks very much in advance

    • @tabaliya
      @tabaliya  7 лет назад +3

      You are most welcome. I'm glad you find the lessons useful for your learning. I'm happy to answer your questions:
      1. Since the Kayda is developed out of the Theme, so yes, the Theme must be internalized. The variations emerge out of the theme. So I wouldn't say "memorized" as much as "internalized" should be the objective. Each theme is like the outline of a story that establishes the main plot; the subplot unfolds the way you want it. Kaydas are improvised in practice, but for the sake of learning, we lay down one particular sequence in a manner that makes sense and also makes it easy to learn. But once you get a hold of the key ideas you are encouraged to develop your own variations.
      2. If you are a beginner, I would suggest the following (just to get you started - there are no hard rules about this):
      Play the Theka a few times, say 4-6 times, to establish the pulse and the gait of the Taal
      Play the Kayda in single tempo (or whatever the introductory tempo you choose - could be double, depending on the Kayda and tempo)
      Then double the tempo (or quadruple, if your introductory tempo was double) and play the theme two times, to establish the composition in the listener's mind
      Then roll through the variations - if they are short (like half cycle or one cycle), play them twice, else play once
      Once you come to the end you have the choice of either repeating the theme or launch into the Tihaai directly
      Once the Tihaai is done, settle back into the Theka once again
      3. I decided not to do that in order to save a little time - the lessons had already become too long. But maybe I can create one sometime later with one sample Kayda execution from beginning to the end to show the whole thing. But this may have to wait a while since I have many more lessons to complete in the 50 Lessons series. Once that is done, I'll get to all the numerous requests that I have gotten over the last couple of months from students all over the world.
      In the meantime, enjoy your journey with the Tabla. Feel free to shoot me questions.
      Pavan

    • @tabaliya
      @tabaliya  7 лет назад

      More to question 1:
      In Indian music, we do not keep a "sheet" to read and play from it. Rather, the entire music is played without looking at any reference notes. With practice you will get there too.

      Kydas are great, I am familiar with Dadra, Kherwa, Teen Tal and Rupak boles. It will be great if there is an indication of each Kydas relationship with boles.... Or perhaps you have different strategy how to utilize these Kydas. If you do please elaborate on how to best use of these kydas. Again Thank you for your efforts and dedication.

      The accompanying notes for each Kayda provide that as also the slide before each lessons component (Theme, Variation and Tihaai) provides the notes in a spreadsheet form laying out the timing relationship of the bols to the underlying Teen Taal movement. Did you miss this somehow?

    • @tabaliya
      @tabaliya  7 лет назад +1

      Thanks for your comments. Regretfully, I didn't do one exclusively focusing on the basic bols since I laid out the assumption in my very first lesson that these lessons are geared towards those who have had a basic grounding in the basic bols of Tabla. If you are interested there are other Tabla videos on RUclips and elsewhere which cover the basic sound production. I would recommend Pt. Sadanand Naimpally's tabla videos, in particular his very first one where he covers all the bols of Tabla.
      Where and when possible, for each lesson I have briefly covered the bols used in that particular Kayda or other composition. Hope that helps.

    Discovered these treasure lessons - amazing job - a great value for learners like me ! You do mention these are reference for your students but a bunch of us out there are learning ‘ekalavyan’ style …wonder if you can pass on some thoughts on how to memorize these numerous variations, how to pick up speed (with time yes, how long ;-) - are these variations more of a practice thing? While on lesson 4, lesson 2 fades away! Any recommended way to reinforce - sorry many questions !
