  • Mel Phillips never thought that he'd play a sport like tennis. But when the right coach came along and urged him to play, it changed the course of his life-on and off the court.
He went on to become a tennis coaching professional, bringing countless new players to the sport in the Chicago area who, like him, may have never played. Inspired by the approach of his former coach, he sought to make an impact on their lives, not just their skills.
In 2010, Mel was diagnosed with neuroendocrine cancer, a disease that he had watched his mom struggle with for years. He had no idea what outcome awaited him. So to get through each day, and the challenges that it brought, he relied on the values instilled in him by his mother and later by his coach: that service can often be the most rewarding therapy of all.
    This is his story.

Wow! Watched it twice. The first time with tears in my eyes, the second time with pride in my heart. Coach Mel is such a beautiful spirit and soul. He brings so much more to lessons than skills and technique, he brings a calming spirit and a dedication to the youth of the area. So blessed to know him! Truly an inspiration. I loved seeing his sisters surround their brother with so much love and support. It was just beautiful to watch.

Amazing man of God. An inspirational message and life changing story. ❤️ I love the Phillips family because as a young Maywoodian I was close to them by way of the relationship I had with Mel's sister Carol. The family is close and awesomely intimate with one another. I pray for Melvins strength and well-being through a greater and closer relationship with the Lord. I know he shall walk in all the ways which the LORD our God hath commanded so that he may live, and that it may be well with him and that the Lord may prolong his days.
