If you tune into KYD every Sunday and like seeing the family dynamics combined with things not exactly going to plan, you'll enjoy this episode.
We start out with the Hobbiton movie set tour, which was better than we expected. Well, better than Marc expected. Marc & Tori do their last tips segment before Tori flew back home to college. Then we make our way to the stunning Bay of Islands after a brief overnight stay in the lovely accommodations of our 4 door SUV rental. *Tip: don’t do this. At least if you’re over 30, wait… 25. No, don’t do this.
Marc had a small mishap while playing king of the mountain with the boys and possibly fractured his collar bone. Air BnB life has been a fun change of pace, but it’s not for us. We like the freedom and flexibility of traveling in an RV. At the end of this episode, we pick up our Class C from bit.ly/KYD-Wild... which has already proven to be the best way to see New Zealand.

The dreaded hotel! Reminds me of when we used a sheet, covered in sand from the beach that day, to lay over the bed in a horrible room. So much more to the story but we still laugh about it often! Family memories 💕

I really enjoyed seeing you all back to gether for this holiday, it's sad that our children grow up and eventually move away from us, I look back over the years and think how lucky you are to be able to capture all these magical moments of happiness that in years to come you will be able to look back on and be thrilled to see your marvelous family, so no matter what happens you will always have these great recollections to jog your memories
loved Hobbiton back in 2006 when I went there, but then it was just the remnants of the set. Looks so much more awesome now.

So many likes in this video!!! Cows coming up to Marc and Tori then when she jumped and got excited the cows ran back away from you! 😅 How sweet the boys and you guys were to Tori leaving!! Such a loving nature family!! Then Tori being carried by her younger brother because she didn't want sandy feet 😃! And I'm with you Trish, boys including Marc jumping off the rocks, omg I would have to seat in the car too!! Then not to mention the bugs in your room, that is probably why the motel was available no-one else wanted to sleep there with bugs crawling on ya!!
Those dodgy hotels and sleepless nights in a car make for some good memories. Glad to see it isn’t all waterfalls and cappuccinos, really enjoying your videos.

I can say we were travelling, and we had a reservation in Myrtle Beach, and planned a stay in Hilton Head, and did not reserve a room for the travel day with the expectation that surely we would find a room between Hilton Head an Myrtle Beach. Luckily we did and as we drove to get the room upon arrival we found out the front desk sold our room with a confirmed reservation. We looked and called every hotel in Myrtle Beach. We ended up staying in a Walmart Parking Lot in our Van. I'll never forget that trip, that night or that parking lot. This year we ventured back to Myrtle Beach, and the first thing the kids said when we went to Walmart was, "This is the parking lot we slept in." PRO Tip "Have reservations or plan to stay in the Walmart B and B."
I went on a lot of road trips in my adolescent years and this video (sleeping in the car and crappy motel rooms) had me laughing because that’s really how it is sometimes

Slept in my car and ski'd 10k vert at Abasin the next morning. I did not however bruise my shoulder struggling on the mountain like you did Mark. Looks like y'all had fun, we took the west coast down in Fall/Winter, got to witness the North Island's first snow of the year, then took the dolphin escorted ferry to the south island where we saw the first snowfall of the year there. Incredible experience, cannot wait to go in summer for swimming. We did tons of hiking and even spotted that rare "smurf" mushroom.
I cannot wait until I can see Hobbiton. Thanks for the tip about the evening tour. All of this looks amazing!

What a FUN video! New Zealand is so beautiful! I bet that was such a unique experience getting to see where Lord of the Rings was filmed. I had no idea that the tree is hand made. Didn't you say that all the leaves were hand woven to the limbs? It looks so real! WOW! Really enjoyed this tour. Thanks for sharing and for all you guys do!

The story was that tree was in the first movie and then it died and they needed to recreate it. Each leaf (200,000) was painted, but the director didn't like the color so they repainted them again!

There never was a tree there of the right proportions naturally. They 'deconstructed' one from elsewhere, put it back together where it was needed, and reinforced with fibreglass and metal, (but as it was now dead they needed to hand-attach artificial leaves all over). By now you will know the UV light in the sunlight is quite strong in NZ, and the leaves kept having to be repainted to look green as the UV kept bleaching the color. After the LOTR shoot ended it was left there but not maintained. When they came back to shoot The Hobbit, the new batch of leaves were a different green, so it was repainted over and over again. So yeah - it is totally artificial. :)

LOVE YOU ALL... LOOKS AMAZING !! LOL , I hate to admit it..but we have spent many nights sleeping in our car when all hotels were booked. Not Fun when ya got a bunch of cranky kids and husband. Our nickname for Rest stops is "A STOP AND DROP" because we drive till we are so tired, we find a place to park and sleep.. we turn the key off and drop our heads and pass out ! Hahaha

Accommodation is a tricky beast in NZ!
We did a fair bit of parking up away from official sites, I think you call it boon docking. The really awesome thing is the number of dump stations and fresh water supplies. Each little town seems to have one. We did use official sites occasionally to catch up on the washing.
Going to Rainbow Falls is just as spiritual of an experience today as it was way back when. It's all in how one perceives it. The times we live in today are just as spiritual as the times in which indigenous societies lived, it's just that we have a hard time seeing ourselves without a gulf of some number of centuries to give it 'perspective.'

Lesson learned? When traveling in unfamiliar territory you may just ask if possible to see the room before payment has been made. Or look online to see where it stands on a roach scale of 1 to 5. Lol. Hope your shoulder feels better. Love the videos
Funny, I did check out room first. Even looked at the sheets, but didn't check Carson's bed. There were little things moving. Probably not bed bugs, but there is no way we could fall asleep wondering!
