In my opinion carrying a fixed blade is one of the best options. Since I live in Germany and carrying a one handed, locking blade is illegal a fixed just does the trick. Fast and easy access, reliable and you dont have to worry about closing on you like when carrying a slipjoint. I EDC a Sanrenmu 7130. Awesome blade, great bang for your buck at 20$. Its only made out of 8Cr13MoV but they did the heat treatment very good
Same here, I’m also from Germany and I’d rather carry a fixed blade because it’s also easier to explain to police that a blade length up to 12 cm is allowed. I’m more scared that the Officers don’t understand what a slipjoint knife is and that they are legal.
Unsere Gesetzeslage ist einfach so seltsam. Fixed bis 12 cm? Kein Problem! Klappmesser 5 cm mit Einhandöffnung?! Ab in Knast.
When people went covid crazy, I carried a cheapo mossy oak bowie. I dailyed this knife for about a month then switch to a mora companion and I love it. It's as sharp as a utility knife but can handle abuse
Next: reasons to edc a sword
Was thinking the same thing. Pictured something like from Blade series.
I live in Kansas - I can carry a sword if I wish.
Dude...I needed that laugh 👍
Every day accessories
No cap my dad's friend in Poland yrs back got stopped by a few kids with knifes and they tried to mug them, to which his friend (at the time wearing a trench coat) pulled out a medieval sword on them. To which they quickly dispersed
Thanks for the sheath options especially! I find the achilles heel of all EDC fixed blades is the sheath design. The Boker AK1 has an excellent sheath that's included and works for a few other knives of similar size.
I just made a RUclips Video showing my edc as a beginner lol I just found this community and I’m doing so much research. Thank you for your videos they are so helpful!
I'm a bigger guy, an outdoorsman, and have worked in rugged industrial environments for 40 years. I use my knives a lot and am hard on them. Being wider in the ass, I can move a folder from the pocket clip to inside the pocket before sitting down to a box of donuts so it doesn't hang up on the arm of the chair. :) That's the main reason I prefer a folder over a belt carried fixed blade. I also own a few "neck knives", Cold Steel to be more specific. Those are handy because I can hang extra shit on the neck string and are no more difficult to re-sheath than a fixed blade belt knife. I have over 100 knives, Boker, SOG, Spyderco, older Cold Steel, Mora-kniv, Leatherman, CRKT, Gerber and other brands. My EDC folder is a Cold Steel T-Lite 4". My back up folders are all Spyderco's. Go to hunter is a Cold Steel Master Hunter San Mai. I enjoyed your opinions on knives.
I agree. Best bang for your money: Morakniv. Made in Sweden, Superior steel, lifetime warranty. Not expensive. 👍
Man!! I love your knives!! Texas you can carry what you want in a knife without a problem.
Yea some idiot was carrying a machete while waiting in line for academy to open #texas
IMHO The Bob Dozier Sheath has been around for years as well as his knives. He had us all beat a very long time ago. He's been making customs for years. He made one for me back in me back in 2007. Been a workhorse since.
Ive carried a pine ridge knives high country for a year now. Great small fixed blade.
Just started carrying an Esee xancudo fixed blade. Loving it so far. Sold all my folders
A clip manufacturer out there is missing a big trick. How difficult to produce a pocket clip which is angled to minimise the space taken up by a sheath (Kydex) and not chew up a pocket (Ulticlip take note).
My problem with fixed blades is I rarely wear a belt. If I am wearing a belt, my legally concealed firearm is on it.
My concealed weapons license allows me to carry a bit longer knife. I been carrying the Fallkniven A1 Pro wrapped around my calf with pants and my ZT562carbon flipper for as my back pocket folder.
Love the new camera angle and that sick leather chair
Another great clip option (that also don't destroy your pockets) are the mummert knives clips. Very very nice.
I like my Lionsteel B35 fixed blade great knife .
I think you would like a dangler sheath for your fixed blades, many leather makers can custom make one for you. They are very comfortable and visible since they sit low. LT Wright makes them but you can have them custom made too.
I can't edc a fixed blade, but when working or camping dangler sheaths really make the comfort a lot better for me and eases resheathing. With traditional sheaths, I often feel like I end up with the handle pressing into my ribs when I bend in certain directions, or the bottom digging into my thigh.
find a 3 - 4" blade one, might come with a sheath ... if not make one
had a similiar experience.. bought 3 sheaths for one knife and an ulticlip, nothing helped, it was very uncomfortable. Gave up.. Then I bought a new belt pocket organizer and found out by accident that my fixed blade fits perfectly and since then I ve been happily carrying it.
The Rainier Fastpak is a winner too.
I personally love edcing a fixed blade and I carry the Esee izula in s35vn. Love your content btw I really liked your target and Home Depot carry videos like that
Agree totally about the importance of the sheath to the experience with a fixed blade knife. I recently picked up a bark river gunny and the sheath absolutely sucked. Love the knife - hate the the sheath. I ordered a kydex sheath for it and what a difference.
If you want to stay relatively local - Winkler (In Boone) makes some great knives. Or get you some Cold Steel (before all their stuff goes to hell in a hand basket w/the new ownership).
I started to EDC small fixed blades a month ago and will never look back! ESEE Izula 2, and the TOPS Tom Tracker Scout (CAT) are my goto, carried mostly horizontal in front or back, though I've carried them vertically comfortably as well. The strength of fixed blades can't compare to folders
I'd have put money on the Bradford Guardian being your favorite. It just seems like your style. I also love that knife.
For 5 years I have carried EDC the benchmade bushcrafter... with a custom homemade kydex sheath. I carry it in the pocket of my Fjallraven Vidda Pro pants; which have deep pockets; also which I own many pairs of and wear exclusively. The knife barely sticks out of the top of the pocket; which is great, because I have a pinch point to grab the handle with. It's hard to even tell I have it on me.
You said that people react negatively to pulling out a fixed blade knife. Some of the folding knives that I carry are relatively large. I have had people react negatively to those also, especially if I open them quickly.
Open carry of a firearm is legal in my state, but very few people do it because some individuals freak out. Same principle.
I've always thought fixed blade carry was a neat concept, but I never have pulled the trigger. I have carried folders of various types for about a decade, and I keep finding myself going back to smaller knives. I've carried larger ones, like a full size griptillian, and some stuff that I would consider average sized, like a mini grip or delica. I personally keep going back to my SAK Cadet or either of my smaller spydercos, a Dragonfly and a Squeak. I just feel like they are the least threatening to outsiders, and they get most cutting tasks done with no fuss. On a side note, I think a month of slipjoint carry would be awesome. I love SJs. The Spydey Squeak I mentioned is a sub 3"one hand opening slipjoint, and it's legal in even the strictest areas like the UK and Chicago. I'd love to see you cover it. Utility knife only for a month would also be cool to see. I've recently started working in the shipping industry, and I've been carrying a utility knife to avoid dulling and gunking up my primary blades.
I just bought a White River Sendro pack knife. Might try carrying it
Seems most makers of small fixed blades ship the same sheath - almost always vertical (dangler) carry. I've taken matters into my own hands and bought some leather and a few leather working supplies. I now install a strap of leather on my sheaths to enable a horizontal cross-draw carry. If the makers won't - I will.
You should take a look at the steel will nutcracker
Boker Pry Mini Pro for me - stout little blade with a nice sheath!
Agreed, loved fix blades but the sheaths are a paim
First
Edit: Great vid. Have been considering getting a fixed blade for a while now. Hadn't taken into consideration how sheath selection would affect how I like it. Will keep that in mind as well.
Yep
Been carrying fixed blades for years. ESSEE candiru, Essee izula, Crkt Sting
I like the pocket clip idea. I plan on carrying my LTWRIGHT Patriot everyday, but I don't always wear belts. Sometimes I wear overalls, so I'll need a method other than stuffing the knife and sheath in my pocket. I'm not opening the knife for use until after Christmas. My wife wants something to put under the tree, so 35 years says so.
Luckily I’m from TN so we have practically no knife laws
Washington state is kinda bad. Wish i could carry more.
Carry the dark timber 1911 elite daily. I like blades 4 to 5" fixed and folders.
In Commiefornia, we are allowed to open carry any fixed blade, but the handle MUST be visible at all times, and that means from the hilt to the pommel. Those sheaths that cover half the handle are technicaly considered concealed... Unfortunately, we cannot conceal carry a fixed blade AT ALL. Period. End of argument. Large folders are the only conceal carry option.
I got a Kershaw Emerson with the wave draw it’s pretty awesome
So weird hearing about the US laws from the pov of a Finnish guy. Our law says, we cannot carry a knife if our job doesn't require it (e.g. construction workers) and even still only on the job. Every construction worker carries cheap Mora puukko knifes (fixed blade). And in Lapland, Sami people and other reindeer herders can carry up to three puukko knifes with different sizes, the largest being the "leuku" with like a 20 cm blade.
Mine is the tops 3.5 fieldcraft. Only 5 ounces. Awsome
I just put the crkt spew with my keys. And I carry my key with a carabiner on my belt loop. Gonna replace it with the óbake skoshi.
I don't leave the house without my guardian 3 , I don't mind the stock sheath, maintain the leather and has pulled through for me every day.
There are companies that sell pocket clips for kydex sheaths. I want to get some for my TPK mini raptor and mini camper.
I can live with a well designed cheap knife if it is sharp, but cheap knives often have sheaths that made carrying a fixed blade a problem. What's the point of buying a cheap knife if you have to invest upwards of $50 for an adequate sheath? Unsaid in this video is one of my favorite reasons for carrying a belt-mounted knife: it frees up my right-hand pants pocket (as I am right-handed) for keys, etc. More than once I have reached into my pocket to to retrieve my keys only to have my pocket-clipped folding knife snag on the back of my hand as I withdraw my hand from the pocket and having the knife fall to the floor or concrete. This is especially amusing when witnessed by whoever happens to be there at the time. This led my to dedicating my right-hand pants pocket to my folding knife or carrying the knife in my back pocket which displaced my wallet. Where to carry the wallet? Not one of the worlds biggest problem but a bother nevertheless. Belt-mounted knife? Difficulty solved. By the way, carry your knife any goddamned way you want. If you're not a drunk or meth fuckup who has an ongoing relationship with the local law enforcement community, what's the problem?
I live in Raleigh and I didn’t know about the laws on fixed blades, but have never carried a fixed blade because I’m in a wheelchair, and it’s hard to carry a non folding knife on my person!
Hey fellow Carolinian here, you should consider carrying a neck knife! Maybe a Becker BK-14. Take care
does anyone know if Blade HQ delivers to the UK? and if they do, what will they ship and what will they not ship? I have heard different things form different places. cheers
I plan on edc one in the future but first I have to find the right fixed blade
Hey Taylor, two things i wanna tell you to try out... First, actually a pair of jeans cause I saw the bradford with the custom sheath didn't quite fit in the back pocket. try Off The Grid Hideout jeans. extra pockets for EDC items! Secondly, another fixed blade. The Ferrum Forge Lackey just got back in stock at BHQ! Keep up the good work!
It really frees my pocket thats why i carry a fixed
I live in NC too, that does suck but there has been lots of stabbings hence the law
We need a clip sheath video btw
I EDC the Bradford Guardian 3 in horizontal carry, dont cut anything with it (maybe a piece a pie)
I have found that my Gerber Principle is pretty much the perfect EDC knife for a wide variety of tasks. It can handle EDC tasks like opening packages, food prep, etc very easily but can also handle survival/bushcraft stuff like fire starting, wood processing, etc.
i carry fixed blade when I'm in the woods on a dangler front right side leather sheath
Nobody talks about the edc stockman knife anymore. I think you are all crazy. Three blades, fits in your pocket. Made for just general cutting. Get the congress model if you want a forth blade. It is not for self defense, but the best everyday use knife for most of us. You can carry either one and a defensive knife. I carry 3-4 different knives on me everyday, all at once. Think out side the container.
How bout the links for those sheaths with clips.
You sir rock thanks Taylor
Question what is the 2nd knife with the pocket clip?
Those are reasons to carry a fixed blade instead of a folder, but what would be the reasons to carry a fixed blade at all? BTW, I'm genuinely curious, not being sarcastic. For some reason I really like knives, just don't have any reason to use them at all.
Just subscribed, awesome video and I've really liked other of your videos.
New video setup! Looks good!
Curious, do you carry *A* knife, or do you carry one knife for day-to-day usage and another that is strictly for self defense?
...but we're all just opening Amazon boxes, let's keep it real
But we’re doing it with convenience and style 😎
To get the next knife😂
Been trying to get my hands on a gmf1-f for a year now.. they sell out so damn fast lol
what is the name of the first folder you show in the vid? Thanks
Slightly off topic what brand shirt are you wearing
I hate belts on my knives too
i edc a tops al mar mini operator on the small of my back every day. idgaf about what's legal, i care about how i can effectively protect myself in a life threatening situation. it is what it is. 🤷🏼♂️
Edc fixed blade knife carry.i can just see the boss and co workers now.not a chance and you would be told to leave or be fired now if your job requires yes ,but only on the job
I’ve been looking for a belt can someone please tell me what belt he uses or can someone tell me what video he showed his belt off in
Taylor where did u get the hat? I live in Statesville
Is what the brand of he sheath at @12:45 a “Rogue Customs” sheath?
Roac
What knife is in the thumbnail?
Hi! Check Speed Demon from TRC Knives (Lithuania). You’ll love it!
What part of NC are you in?
I only use an OTF but I love these types of videos to give me excuses to buy more sharp things.
For me the biggest advantage of EDCing a fixed blade is the variety of carry options. I mean 9 out of 10 times you carry a folder in your pocket for quick and easy draw. While there are much more carry options for a fixed blade, as long as you have kydex sheath, some 550 cord or ulticlip/tecloc and a blade length not exceeding 4 inches.
Plus if you live in a place where cops love to perform illegal searches and don't bother learning knife laws, it is easier to conceal a neck knife, since pockets is the first (often the only) thing they check.
Damn all these smaller fixed blades and I’m over here carrying a full size single mark Ka-Bar
Same here lol
Why not carry both? I carry at least three knives on any given day, and one of them is always a fixed blade. I live in a constitutional carry state, and I can open carry or concealed carry everywhere except a courtroom, any size of blade.
Your state's knife laws are ridiculous, Taylor....
There really not that bad I think it’s just one of those things where it’s says it’s a law but the police won’t enforce it
@@mavsgarage5245 should look up washington state
Lol try living in Canada
I leave this under every video I watched, it helps the algorithm.
Thank God I live in Texas. I can carry any length of knife
God bless Texas
Damnnit...
God Bless texas
Washington has stupid knife laws, I can't concealed carry a 4.25" blade or larger, but I can open carry a 32" katana if I wanted, can't wait to move to Utah, their knife laws sum up to "just don't kill nobody please"
The fact we have to even debate about OPEN or “concealed” carry of KNIVES is a very, very sad tale of where this country has ended up.
Our great great grandfathers would be rolling over in their f*&cking graves.
who knew that NY knife laws would be more freeing than North Carolina?
Fixed blades that size make good neck knives. Just carry them outside your shirt to stay legal.
It's funny how the american and canadian knife laws are the complete opposite. In Canada you can pretty much carry a 10 inch dagger with you (as long as you say it not for hurting people), but you cannot carry a folding knife.
The empowering part comes from stability. I've been using a fixed for my EDC for a few years now: Lionsteel M1, Becker bk14 and most recently an MKM Makro. Love the M1 and Makro, the BK14 was the most disappointing knife purchase I've ever bought. The sheath for the MKM is awesome. The magnetic belt loop let's me put it in my pocket, belt, sleeve, waistband....
I live in Massachusetts, and literally everything with a blade longer that 1.5" is illegal, with the exception of folding knives. Unfortunately going by their definition, 95% of pocket knives aren't folding knives, anything with a locking mechanism isn't considered folding. The law is really ambiguous because they're illegal when you have them on you "while in the commission of a crime." I read it like the seatbelt law: you need to have them on, but they can't pull you over just for that. I used to be wary of staying away from automatics, certain blade shapes, etc. After a while I just said Fck it I'm breaking the law anyway, might as well carry what I like. It's like robbing a bank: whether you get out with $2000 or $200K, you're facing the same charge.
I don't like black blade finishes, but in a city they have an advantage of perception. I used to take the commuter rail into Boston everyday. I would pull out a knife with a 2" satin blade would draw eyes. I swear I could pull out a Rambo knife, but with a black finish people don't blink an eye. Besides being hard to see I think there's some instinct that kicks in when people see naked steel, whereas black and some gray finished almost make them look like toys.
And another reason i live in texas cause i carry a 12 in fixed blade everywhere
Same here in arkansas. Gotta love the the rural areas.
Funny because it was illegal in Texas for decades. They JUST legalized it.
Totally depends on your needs and usage. You can carry a Rat1 (for $20) and beat the crap out of it. Am I in the Wild west where I need to be able to 'draw' a weapon on demand...I think not. I camp and am outdoors a lot. I ALWAYS have a folder or two on me (sometimes a neck knife). I also have a multi-tool, a fixed blade & a hatchet in my car all the time.
As far as the law goes, unless you commit a crime or are waving a big freakin' machete about, no one is going to bother you (People who live in CA. you have lots of problems, I won't even go there). I live in NC also....Carry what you are most comfortable with and does the most for you, it's a tool after all.
Benchmade hidden canyon hunter here. Beautifal knife to carry.
I'm not a hunter but I edc either the canyon or Izula right where my belt buckle is, and now I find myself resting my hand on the handle.
I’m carrying the same right now
I love pulling out my esee 3 from scout carry/stock sheath. esee makes the best factory sheaths. best fixed blades too, for that matter. I carry it daily without a problem.
Fixed blade EDC for life. I still carry folders, especially during the weekends, but for work I carry a fixed blade every day. Usually either an Esse Izula or an Ontario Rat 3
I’m carrying a 2020 benchmade hidden canyon hunter in s30v with the wooden handles scales and a leather sheath
Down in TX, if people notice/care about your knife, it's usually for conversation. It must really suck to have to be aware of so much crap just for a knife. I've used mine in the bank, no one cared.
Do you EDC a handgun? I've found that carrying a fixed blade and (concealed) gun both on my right side is inconvenient. I make my own knives and tend to use Kydex sheaths that clip on my left hip so as not to interfere with my right-side concealed gun holster.
Great,. Now I'm curious. To BladeHQ .com I go.
