Rick Martel deserves a mention for 52 minutes in 1991 which made him the Rumble's first Iron Man, which may or may not have happened because nobody was assigned to eliminate him.
Rick Martel does deserve a mention but the first Rumble Iron Man is probably Ted Dibiase in 1990 who I believe went close to 45 minutes but had to be eliminated for the Hogan/Warrior spot.
There were Iron Men every year, Bret Hart was the first one in 1988 (25 minutes), that was only 20 guys too. It's just that the first "true" performance was from Dibiase in 1990.
On a rewatch, the 2001 rumble elimination of Kane may have been the start of Austin's heel turn. The relentless chair shots to Kane's head at the end at least supported the idea that Austin was willing to do anything for the title and wouldnt play by the 'good guy' rules. I know he was always an anti hero but around this time he was even more unhinged.
We all looked past that because we felt bad Austin was jumped by Triple H. He was going in bloodied and battered. With that handicap we accepted he need an equalizer to overcome the supernaturally dominant Kane. You’re right though, it was right in front of our faces.
Nah it was before that ever since his return at Unforgiven 00 (along with a new Theme by Disturbed) he adopted a more unhinged personality, not only does he attacked heels after they won clean (like he did to Kurt Angle at Armageddon 00 or HHH later on at NWO 01) but as you said he'll do anything to get a title shot including trying to beat the holy hell out of Stephanie plus there's also the fact that anytime he almost had the world title won he gets screwed. What was straw that broke the camel's back was his loss to HHH at 3 stages of Hell which J.R. took note of Austin's facial expressions at the entrance ramp at the end of the match but then put much to it.
Rey Mysterio lasting 62 minutes and 12 seconds will always stand out as one of the defining moments of my time as a wrestling fan. Especially when it looked like Randy Orton would win after Rey was thrown into the steps by Triple H.
