Thank you this video was very helpful, as a guitar player a lot of this info has been going over my head but this was the breakthrough I needed. If anybody is watching this video copying this dudes moves and still can’t get playback out of the drum sequencer on channel 1, as in you can assign sounds to the 16 button panel but when you hit play it doesn’t do anything, here’s what you gotta do: Take note of the MIDI channel window at 2:55 of the video. At the bottom there’s a ‘Sync’ section. Input for the key step pro needs to be set at internal for that field in the control center. I just recently got my key step and downloaded the midi control center and by default that setting was on something else, after I switched it to internal the rig worked just as it is in this video. I was on the verge of pulling out my hair when by chance I noticed that and recalled something I read in a forum about internal denoting “master” in which the master, in this case keystep pro, is in control. Idk if this guy assumed that setting is set to internal by default or perhaps when this video was made that was the case, but that’s what I had to do. There are a few other settings in the clock section that affect this particular feature too but my key step was setup appropriately for those out of the box (again mine was clearance so I can’t be too sure that is the standard). For those more curious, it has to do with a master/slave relationship with this sort of equipment. Basically the master is the device setting the clock or time or whatever and the slaves are following suit, so changing the parameters to “internal” in the control center cues Keystep to be master. Google “keystep pro master or slave”, the instruction manual does a decent enough job explaining it but there are other resources out there as well.
Sometimes I am mega knuckle head w/ technology (I’m 22), and tonight my first night with keystep pro I spent a couple of hours trynna figure this out... how to map it w/ my DAW... dude I am so grateful for vid rn. Thank you!
Awesome video thanks Patrick. However I notice the MIDI setting "Auto demix by channel if multitrack recording" is gone in the new Logic update - will you provide an update on how to handle this in the latest version of Logic? (10.7.2)
Man this was so helpful. Thank you for this! You are right, it’s simple but if you don’t know anything it’s hard to figure out some of the small details on your own.
Really appreciate the video patrick. Can you share how you connected the drum brute and the mini freak into the rig ? Connecting midi cables confuses me a bit when to use out / in / thru etc any help appreciated! Cheers steve
Greg Hill 0 seconds ago Dude mine glitches no matter what buffer size I set... I got this cuz my old Launchkey 25 was doing that and I thought it was defective. WHY do my keyboards do this??? Is it because my Macbook Pro only uses USB C ports? Do you think I need a powered hub?
Jared Humphers lots of differences man... size and keybed obviously, but each keyboard is really intended to be used for different purposes. To simplify, The keylab is better for linking up with analog lab / the DAW. The controls on the keylab give the user seamless control of all of analog lab’s instruments and sounds. It can control outboard synths but has limited I/O when compared to the KSP. The KSP is really a performance tool, but personally i find it to be really use in DAW setups as well. It’s meant to be the brain / centerpiece of a setup that contains outboard synths, modules, drum machines, etc. (often DAWless setups). obviously it has a USB out and can be used as midi controller that works with software instruments as well. For me, the KSP is the ideal size. 37 keys, small-ish footprint. Also has really enhanced my writing & beat making process. It’s cool to set up a sequence and just have it looping in the background while I’m writing vocal parts and adding guitar. I’ve also started getting into hardware synths, drum machines, etc. so the KSP has allowed me to start adding those into my production process really easily. If you’re only working with software instruments, the KSP can still be cool (hence why i included that first setup) but it’s probably overkill. My favorite thing at the moment is running the KSP in a hybrid setup like I showed in this video. (That’s probably more info than you needed lol. But hope that helps!)
You’re videos are helpful for choosing gears, much love from India 🇮🇳, I’m gonna buy my first midi but I’m confused between “Akai MPK 3 and Arturia minilab MK2” while I’ve been waiting on for “Arturia’s MKIIl” to release !! Do you have any information when it’s gonna be out ??
Hey Patrick. Big fan of your channel. But I'm finding what you're showing in many of your tutorials is not what I'm seeing with the newest version of Logic Pro X (10.7.2). Are you planning on offering any updated lesson?
Can you do a video as clear and concise but for the beatstep pro possibly? I want to sequence 2 x boutique from it, but it has 1 x midi out? I’m newb to this hardware game so any help would be appreciated;)
HELP: I'm in Logic X Pro. My arturia Keystep is triggering my Juno-106 fine. BUT, when I record the midi (sound coming through fine) and want to play it back, the midi is not triggering the Juno-106. Again, the issue is that the MIDI is not coming through during playback.
I notice the MIDI setting "Auto demix by channel if multitrack recording" is gone in the new Logic update. I can't get my BeatStep Pro to sync to Logic on my MacBook Pro now.
So i set up like you said, 1st tack i set to drums but when i set the 2nd tack to a synth it sets all 4 channels to the synth, i just want the 1st channel to be drums and the rest synth sounds, why is it doing this ?.
Hi, I changed all the MIDI channels in the Inspector, but for some reason the keyboard still only plays the synth that's on whatever track I have selected on in Logic. Do you know why that might be? Did the Auto Demix check too. Thanks!!
Hey man, you probably don't have this problem anymore but the trick is to arm all the tracks for recording. The R should be lit red on all of your midi channels. Then when you switch on the keystep it'll select different channels.
WARNING. If you are on Logic 10.7 or Kip few 2.01 most of this video is redundant. Auto Demix is now part of default and no longer a tick box, KSP default is midi set 1,2,3,4 for each track so no need to go to Mac except if you want to check. So just create tracks as explained. Enjoy
Question: Using a KeyStep 37 (not the pro) I find that the arpeggiator is triggered when I start recording in Logic. Is there a way to turn that off so the KeyStep arpeggiator doesn't automatically start?
Anyone know how to go about this process in Logic 11 yet? Everything is just slightly different enough to make it all confusing as F again, for instance, the very first thing he said to do was "go up to recording settings and make sure the 'auto demix by channel if multichannel recording' option is clicked", for me, Logic 11 doesn't even have that option under the MIDI heading lol. This all worked for me years ago when i first got the KeyStep Pro and ran it on Logic X, why mess with the little things for the newer version, awkward shite now....
Hey this video is super helpful. In my case, the Keystep still triggers the instrument track that is highlighted, regardless of the midi inputs. It's acting like "Midi input = All". I need to de-select all the tracks in logic in order for the keystep to be able to control which instrument I hear. Anyone else have this issue? It's not a big problem, but I noticed your machine doesn't do this.
I've experienced this as well. Be sure that you have your tracks armed for recording, otherwise Logic seems to default to MIDI ALL regardless of what you select on your controller. I have been using Logic to jam with a complex rig of external MIDI devices and software instruments and it seems like there is always some little box that isn't ticked somewhere that can make you scratch your head for hours.
@@jeffreyjbyron I got it to work by making sure all of the instruments are armed to record. I notice that the midi control will occasionally switch back to all if I switch the instrument type.
Actually, I can’t get this to work. The midi channel drop down on the tracks inspector in Logic is for the output channel, not the input. So you can’t use that to direct your KSP midi tracks to corresponding VSTs. All the KSP output from all KSP midi output channels is played by whatever is the selected VST/track in Logic. Very frustrating. It does work in Ableton, where you can easily select the input midi channel per track. I am slowly starting to give up on Logic. This is a basic feature. Please tell me I am wrong ?
You've got to arm the software instrument channels for recording. Make sure the little R is lit up. See 5:45 in the video. This got me too, lemme know if it works!
can you do a vid explaining how to plug and use synths like the Behringer line, NEUTRON,K2,MODEL D,PRO 1,WASP,CAT , into the cv or voice plugs , there is literally nothing ,no vid or tutorial that actually shows new users how to plug and use these functions
I'm trying to figure out how to do this with fl studio and i'm struggling. I can't seem to have it only trigger the drum sounds from one track, instead it's just working like a normal midi controller and when I switch to track 2, 3, or 4 it still triggers the sounds from the daw, as well as the other hardware synths I have routed to those tracks. anyone know what I'm doing wrong?
in version 10.8, this video is unnecessary, it's a drama, I can't set any midi keyboard to work properly, including Arturia Key Step Pro, I've been working on Studio One 6 so far and it's nothing compared to the midi configuration in Logic 10.8. A week has passed and I still don't know how to do it

I am a BST owner so this was helpful to a certain extent, thank you for teaching me how to update the firmware, never knew that!
Thanks for the transpose trick on the drum track. Was having this issue today and this cleared it up. Great job!
Super helpful ,thank you! Can you do similar set-up for the live loops function of Logic X pro and do the whole thing at a live show?
Thank you so much for this vídeo. I’ve got the beatstep pro and I presume the procedure should be the same , right ? Thanks a lot !
Man you make it easy...watched 4 times and still learning!
Have you experienced a lot of bugs / freezing / weird arp behavior like most of us? Very curious.

How did you setup it as a transport control?
What are the main differences between the Keystep Pro and the Keylab?

Really nice and understandable guide. Does anyone know if there is a similar guide to setting up Presonus Studio One 6 like this?
So you can only plug 2 hardware instruments to the KSP and be able to record on separate tracks in DAW/ Is that correct? or up to four?
