It's a korean book of short stories but I just checked and it does have a english version. Not all stories in the book are about lgbtq or any kind of love, but it is a lovable book and I'm currently in love with the author's other books too😌 Soo if you have time it might be awesome to spend it reading the book!! ☺ You could get more info abt Yi-kyoung and Sui's love story since there are more details than the anime, I rly loved the discriptions of their emotions. This was beautiful and, heartbreakingly realistic. I hoped that I was wrong, but I saw that ending coming. Loving someone is a multi-faceted ACTION. It requires constant, deliberate growth; both as an individual and as a couple. It's not enough to be wanted, we need to be needed as well, and Yi-Kyoung never felt that from Sui. I think Sui was allowing their relationship to be a distraction from doing the inner work that she needed to do, but wounds can't constantly be bandaged over, they must be properly healed. Though they both loved each other, Sui's inability to love herself would always be a block to allowing herself to be truly known. That requires vulnerability, and if you can't be vulnerable with yourself, you can't be vulnerable with anyone else. Yi-Kyoung was growing, and the reality is, that you can only hold space for someone for so long before you will start to stagnate yourself. It hurts just as much to let go of someone as it does to be let go of, but I think Yi-Kyoung did the right thing with both women and for herself. Maybe Red Dog didn't have the production budget to do a "redemption" arc, like in "Bloom Into You", but I could see these two coming back together after more growth and having their "50 years of Marriage"! While I love happy endings like in the aforementioned anime/manga (and loathe the "they're just reaallly close friends", "oops, she died", or, "it was just a phase and now she's straight", tropes), I think there's a place for this type of realism too. No one was at fault here, they just grew at different speeds. That happens in all types of relationships, not just romantic ones. I think the takeaway is that healing, growth, communication, vulnerability, and being true to oneself are paramount to having a healthy relationship; with anyone.
You're one of the only people in this comment section that understood the assignment. The amount of people saying "aww poor Sui" or "Sui didn't deserve that" is...not surprising for the younger generation out there in the dating world. They aren't accepting that Sui *never* communicated, ever. About anything, or with anyone. And they think that she didn't deserve to be broken up with, for being an immature partner unwilling to budge on the lack of communication. Last time I checked that's an extremely VALID reason to leave somebody. If they're never gonna TALK to you, about anything, and you're never truly gonna see *exactly* who they are, then that relationship is built on a lie and a facade and is doomed to fail. I'd love to see a sequel where they've both grown more and Sui has learned to communicate! But at this current point that the movie left us with, she's not ready for a relationship, she isn't mature enough for one. She was actively harming her lover by brushing her off, or making her feel bad every time she tried to talk about the hard stuff so she wouldn't have to have uncomfortable, but necessary conversations. That's immaturity at it's finest.
@chubbybunny6975 I understand what you're both saying. But at the same time, I do feel for Sui. She reminded me a lot of my partner. She was outgoing enough but never really spoke about how she was feeling or why. Just not communicating, it was frustrating, but in time I learned she did communicate just not in words. And I learned how to communicate back... in her language. One day we did talk and she explained to me that her throat would litteraly close up to the point of feeling painful whenever she wanted to talk about her troubles. I suggested therapy but she wouldn't go. We've been together nearly 10 years now and she communicates somewhere in the middle with me. Enough that we understand eachother. So maybe I'm biased, but I do wish Sui had a happier ending, but I can to an extent understand why it ended the way it did.
@@hannahbailey3649 i think it goes to show how people are diffrent and handle things diffrently. we are all diffrent at the end of the day and thats bound to create friction, and some realtionships can endure it for long while others may eventually lead to a break up. either path is understandable tbh, some realtionships may truly change for the better while others may not due to the fact that change is not happening or its taking too long thats its harming the partner. life is often grey and i dont blame someone for being scared of change, change is hard. but at the same time refusing to change will affect your partner and also ones self. and in this story i personally think breaking up was the better option, but i dont hate sui for the way she was, i empathise with her, but i recognise that yi kyoung getting hurt by sui. This reminded me so much of my ex girlfriend and I. She was my first love and we fell in love during highschool in a small, conservative town. After graduation we both escaped to a big city and moved in together. The time together were the most beautiful 4 years of my life. But after some time she got bored of me and started spending all her free time partying with her friends without me ever being invited. We grew apart and eventually she broke up with me. To this day I still think about her all the time.

See, this is sad yes. But it feels so real. We've all been through this, rarely first loves last, but they will always have a lifelong impact on you and will always be special to you, regardless of how you split. This was beautiful. Reminds me of my first love but we weren't in a relationship I actually didn't realize what I felt was love for her until I graduated college, she and I were best friends but I always had feelings so strong that it's impossible to call it anything but love, I still dream of her and think of her to this day It has been 10 years, and I still see her in my dreams and I get to have what I could never have in real life. This movie is so well put together, and it's amazing how relatable it is, regardless of which character you relate to most. Love this.

I keep rewatching the ending cause I could not understand some implications on it. Then I noticed that there's a change from using a flip phone to a smartphone indicating that the relationship and the break up happened years ago. Yi kyung doesn't wear glasses anymore means that she matured and a lot of things have changed. Going back to their province, she still imagines a young Sui sitting in the bridge which probably means she's still reminiscing or stuck in the past trying to understand what happened to Sui that lead to their break up. Her vision of Sui's back is blurry which probably means she's trying to remember all of Sui's memory through the years though it became a blur. The bird emerges and the question "what kind of a bird it is" is on screen then a clip of Sui answering "The common heron" then the bird flew then the screen went back to Yi kyung but young Sui vision wasn't there anymore. I think it means that Yi kyung suddenly realizes who or what Sui is to her. Releasing what she thought of Sui (the young one in the bridge) and now has a grasp of what Sui really is (the common heron bird). The flying of bird can also mean Yi kyung fully letting go.
It hurts much more when I translated the dialogue towards the ending where Yi-Kyoung was breaking up with Sui. In Sui's eyes, there's no problem in their relationship and was the opposite of what Yi-Kyoung was saying. (Starts at 52:06) 💔
When Yi-Kyoung (22:01) was coughing maybe because of allergy to molds, Sui took care of it (52:46). Yi-Kyoung was ashamed of Sui's appearance in the party (38:53), Sui was actually particular with her appearance (52:48).It's just that she's from her part-time work where grilling meat and smoke are abundant. Unfortunately, we also know that Sui is really a closed-off type of person who doesn't want to burden her Yi-Kyung with her problems - sometimes lashing out to Yi-Kyung that she doesn't know her. That led to Yi-Kyung being gravitated to Eunji, where she also imitated her (e.g watch, necklace). There is also a problem with Yi-Kyung delivering her feelings to Sui when Sui asked her if she was crying (46:15). But we all know she was too deep with her feelings with Eunji that time. Yi-Kyung hates 'greedy' people as it reminds her of Sui's unrelentless pursuit of soccer because Sui was already a lost cause because of her injury.

She hates herself for being attracted to Eunji and even going out with her, but still trying to keep her relationship with Sui intact. She’s greedy for wanting to keep the both of them at once. She eventually did do the right thing by breaking up with Sui and cutting it off with Eunji.
the story depicts two sapphic characters on their "first love" as it says. the story itself was an amazing depiction of how recent generations and how love usually blossoms and withers away. the two lovers sui and yi-kyung are a perfect depiction of how love is and the reason they didn't last was because sui lacked communication and yi-kyung lacked the courage to try to talk deeply. Sui as a character is a person who keeps to herself, does most things herself and doesn't want to bother anyone as you guys saw her dreams as a pro football player got crushed yet she kept to herself trying not to bother anyone because as she saw it, if she made a racket about it it might prove to be useless to try asking for help. after the affair sui and yi-hyung were not the same IT HURTS TO REWATCH THE BREAK UP SCENE!!!! RAAAAAHHHHHHHHH!!!!!! Well now yi-kyung as a character is basically the same except she wants to know more about sui and she wanted to reach out to sui but she knew if she tried sui might not try equally and it might hurt even more then if she didn't. she ended up falling out of love for sui and falling inlove with someone else eunji and thats how the love affair happened but she was tortured by the affair in the process becuase after they ate hotpot she converses about sui and eunji got shaken up bc eunji didn't she had a gf and maybe eunji overthunk it somehow but she was already depicted as a character who hurts feeling seeing as nubi was hurt after her relesionship with eunji but the point is yi-hyung got hurt by eunji and in the last moment when eunji texts yi-hyung she felt dark joy, after bawling her eyes out yi-hyung gets a fever as shes been through a lot sui called 911as yi-hyung collapsed after recovering yi-hyung sat sui down and BROKEUP WITH HER she hurt someone she loved in the process but it was only natural to cry out of frustration for sui. i think the story would've ended better if sui had opened up a bit but in general the movie was amazing and a beautiful example of the habits and mannerisms of love are. there was smth else i was gonna add but i forgot
Sui and Yi-kyung had different love languages and communication styles and were just too young to know they needed to meet each other halfway to make it work. Also, it was for the best that they broke up because Yi-kyung was definitely emotionally cheating on Sui. The moment she started pursuing her attraction for that other woman, that was cheating, they even went on dates. At the end of the day, Sui and Yi-kyung both had things they needed to work on about themselves. And perhaps their relationship was never meant to last forever anyway and that's okay.
It was inevitable! She wasn't communicating, at all. You can't go into a long-term relationship with somebody and expect it to actually be a successful, loving relationship if you don't communicate. Sui never shared anything about herself with anyone, not even the person she was in love with. So no, maybe it wasn't *deserved,* but it was absolutely expected. If one person grows with wanting to communicate and be more open, and the other would rather stay shut-off from the rest of the world, including their loved ones, that relationship won't last, and that's okay! Growing apart hurts, absolutely, but it's best for everyone involved to go their separate ways if they can't communicate and come to a consensus. That's what maturity and growth is.

My headcanon or something like that, thinks that in the future they resumed their relationship. Perhaps time apart and meeting other people and experiences has helped them grow and mature. Perhaps later they became friends again and then resumed their relationship but with greater maturity and care. ❤😢
I should really not be watching this after getting broken up with lol. But I felt all of this, especially when Sui started crying and couldn't control it because that's when she needed Yi-Kyoung the most but it was really too late. I can relate so much to her since just like them we did everything together and we were like that for an entire year only for them to break up with me. I'll miss calling them everyday, laughing with them, and just being ourselves together but there's nothing you can do when you both change but just not together and there's just continous issues in your relationship without truly talking about it. Thank you to whoever made this movie and to whoever uploaded it, I really needed it!!!

I cried so much at the end, but there were many points leading up to it that gave me the *tug at your heartstrings* feeling. This movie is so beautiful omg. this was the most beautiful gl ive ever watched. its so scenic, somehow so romantic yet realistic. yi kyoung was able to grow as she got older but didnt find the stability in the love she had with sui like they once had as teenagers. in the end, she decided that what she wanted she couldn't get from sui. sui's self esteem is what affected their relationship the most and created a harmful barrier of no communication. they loved each other, and they tried to make it work, but in the end they found themselves better off without each other. what a moving story ❤
I'm non binary, at least for now. On almost every aspect other than being a lesbian, I have been in Sui's place. Even the water chugging bit. And not bein able to let go of my athlete past and keep working out just for the sake of it. Being alone... and not being pretty or good enough for the community... I broke down cried for days when I first got to watch this because I fell when Sui fell into the abyss. It felt like I was in it. I still tear up. I am not blaming yi-kyung for doing what she did. I just feel inadequate... I'm sorry

the painful truth we will all learn at some point in our life: “love is not enough” it might be when you are just kids experiencing first love but the reality is as you grow, it takes more than that. we need to grow together, we need to accept changes, because our partner will keep changing too no matter the age. both need to take care of themselves and work on themselves in order to love properly. that’s why i always like the saying, “you take care of yourself for me and i take care of myself for you”. those are things only older me could comprehend and so in my current relationship i see it as, literally, growing old together. we are both “growing”, changing, dealing with our own problems. but we know we’ll always have each other’s back no matter what.
This was... pretty painful to watch. It's really similar to something I went through for years that culminated a few months back. I don't agree that this is a 'sad' ending. Bittersweet sure, but not sad. Relationships like that aren't happy to be in, where you feel like you don't even know your partner, even though you've been together for years. I respect the choice to not make Eunji more important, to make that relationship last longer or be superior. I'm with a partner I'm happy with now, but I don't think that's a prerequisite. Being alone is a lot better than being with someone you can't talk to, if only because you don't feel like you're doing it wrong. A relationship is something you're in because it brings you joy, it's a special gift in your life, not a requirement. I thought I knew that, but I didn't, until recently. Don't settle for something, don't persist, it'll be hard for a while - it was hard for Sui, it was hard for Yikung too (*really* get the 'no right to cry' attitude), but it's a temporary sadness. You'll be happier.
Korean gl taught me no matter how much u love the other person and bring happiness to them individually. If you are poor you will get cheated on and be left behind. Not everyone is an extrovert and actions speak more than words, as far as communication goes. After everything sui did, honestly, people have the guts to defend gold diggers, cheaters and liars who don't even have the spine to take a single constructive action......... all they do is talk
This was as beautiful as it was sad, I loved every minute. (Spoilers) This is just my interpretation of the film, but I think the common heron is supposed to be sui. Their romance starts with Yi-Kyoung asking what the name of the bird was, asking to get to know sui. The film ends with Yi-Kyoung coming to realize while the heron was common that does not mean it was any less magnificent than other birds.
Sui reminds me of myself, except that in mine , we knew each other so well. My first love was the best thing thaat happened. We were mutual in almost everything, our sense of humor and our feelings. Unfortunately, it ended in a rough way, we were a year and 1 month in. On december 24,2023 , i had a bad time with my mental health at that time; so i wanted to talk about it to her and chatted "*her name*" and after that i couldn't bring myself to talk about it to her anymore. She kept on chatting me and I ghosted her for 3 days. On the third day, she called me for the last time, i saw the notification pop up and I wanted to answer let it all out but instead i pressed the red button and ended it, she gave up and said "okay". After the christmas break, January, i told someone in my class about what happened about us while we were doing our project, she really wanted to know the reason why i did it then i lied and told her i was turned off cause of her face; someone probably heard us and told her or she heard it herself cause she knew what the lie was. it's the regret i hate the most that i will take to my fucking grave. She was angry and tried to hurt me the same hurt i gave her. Two months after, March, i had the courage to give her a letter and wrote her everything, she replied two days after. I'm glad i did it. I haven't moved on until now, i think im still in love with her and i hope im not cause she moved on.
May the time come where i no longer search for pieces of what we had when i was with you in movies, music notes in a song or the flower that resembled us in a garden.

I think I saw things differently than some of the other viewers. When she saw the heron at the end to me it was symbolic of realizing, that plain, common everyday bird, is really something special. It symbolizes that solid day in and day out woman that women thumb their noses at cause "they ain't shiny". Girl didn't realize what she had. That solid 365, 24/7 one, that's serious business, and you don't throw that away. She'd been lucky to find sui cause that, doesn't just come around. She threw it all away for a fling. As far as sui's faults, she's not perfect. No one is. Take those tiny cracks and keep 'em, it's worth it.

Though they both loved each other, Sui's inability to love herself would always be a block to allowing herself to be truly known. That requires vulnerability, and if you can't be vulnerable with yourself, you can't be vulnerable with anyone else. Yi-Kyoung was growing, and the reality is, that you can only hold space for someone for so long before you will start to stagnate yourself. It hurts just as much to let go of someone as it does to be let go of, but I think Yi-Kyoung did the right thing with both women and for herself. Maybe Red Dog didn't have the production budget to do a "redemption" arc, like in "Bloom Into You", but I could see these two coming back together after more growth and having their "50 years of Marriage"! While I love happy endings like in the aforementioned anime/manga (and loathe the "they're just reaallly close friends", "oops, she died", or, "it was just a phase and now she's straight", tropes), I think there's a place for this type of realism too. No one was at fault here, they just grew at different speeds. That happens in all types of relationships, not just romantic ones. I think the takeaway is that healing, growth, communication, vulnerability, and being true to oneself are paramount to having a healthy relationship; with anyone.

The amount of people saying "aww poor Sui" or "Sui didn't deserve that" is...not surprising for the younger generation out there in the dating world. They aren't accepting that Sui *never* communicated, ever. About anything, or with anyone. Last time I checked that's an extremely VALID reason to leave somebody. She was outgoing enough but never really spoke about how she was feeling or why. Just not communicating, it was frustrating, but in time I learned she did communicate just not in words. And I learned how to communicate back... in her language.
One day we did talk and she explained to me that her throat would litteraly close up to the point of feeling painful whenever she wanted to talk about her troubles. I suggested therapy but she wouldn't go.
We've been together nearly 10 years now and she communicates somewhere in the middle with me. Enough that we understand eachother. So maybe I'm biased, but I do wish Sui had a happier ending, but I can to an extent understand why it ended the way it did.

This reminded me so much of my ex girlfriend and I. She was my first love and we fell in love during highschool in a small, conservative town. After graduation we both escaped to a big city and moved in together. The time together were the most beautiful 4 years of my life. But after some time she got bored of me and started spending all her free time partying with her friends without me ever being invited. We grew apart and eventually she broke up with me. To this day I still think about her all the time.

We've all been through this, rarely first loves last, but they will always have a lifelong impact on you and will always be special to you, regardless of how you split. This was beautiful. I keep rewatching the ending cause I could not understand some implications on it. Then I noticed that there's a change from using a flip phone to a smartphone indicating that the relationship and the break up happened years ago. Yi kyung doesn't wear glasses anymore means that she matured and a lot of things have changed. Going back to their province, she still imagines a young Sui sitting in the bridge which probably means she's still reminiscing or stuck in the past trying to understand what happened to Sui that lead to their break up. Her vision of Sui's back is blurry which probably means she's trying to remember all of Sui's memory through the years though it became a blur. The bird emerges and the question "what kind of a bird it is" is on screen then a clip of Sui answering "The common heron" then the bird flew then the screen went back to Yi kyung but young Sui vision wasn't there anymore. I think it means that Yi kyung suddenly realizes who or what Sui is to her. Releasing what she thought of Sui (the young one in the bridge) and now has a grasp of what Sui really is (the common heron bird). The flying of bird can also mean Yi kyung fully letting go.

Yi-Kyoung was ashamed of Sui's appearance in the party (38:53), Sui was actually particular with her appearance (52:48).It's just that she's from her part-time work where grilling meat and smoke are abundant.
Unfortunately, we also know that Sui is really a closed-off type of person who doesn't want to burden her Yi-Kyung with her problems - sometimes lashing out to Yi-Kyung that she doesn't know her. That led to Yi-Kyung being gravitated to Eunji, where she also imitated her (e.g watch, necklace).
There is also a problem with Yi-Kyung delivering her feelings to Sui when Sui asked her if she was crying (46:15). But we all know she was too deep with her feelings with Eunji that time. Yi-Kyung hates 'greedy' people as it reminds her of Sui's unrelentless pursuit of soccer because Sui was already a lost cause because of her injury.

i think the story would've ended better if sui had opened up a bit
but in general the movie was amazing and a beautiful example of the habits and mannerisms of love are.

Also, it was for the best that they broke up because Yi-kyung was definitely emotionally cheating on Sui. At the end of the day, Sui and Yi-kyung both had things they needed to work on about themselves. And perhaps their relationship was never meant to last forever anyway and that's okay.

It was inevitable! She wasn't communicating, at all. You can't go into a long-term relationship with somebody and expect it to actually be a successful, loving relationship if you don't communicate. Sui never shared anything about herself with anyone, not even the person she was in love with. So no, maybe it wasn't *deserved,* but it was absolutely expected. If one person grows with wanting to communicate and be more open, and the other would rather stay shut-off from the rest of the world, including their loved ones, that relationship won't last, and that's okay! Growing apart hurts, absolutely, but it's best for everyone involved to go their separate ways if they can't communicate and come to a consensus. That's what maturity and growth is.

I should really not be watching this after getting broken up with lol. But I felt all of this, especially when Sui started crying and couldn't control it because that's when she needed Yi-Kyoung the most but it was really too late. I can relate so much to her since just like them we did everything together and we were like that for an entire year only for them to break up with me. I'll miss calling them everyday, laughing with them, and just being ourselves together but there's nothing you can do when you both change but just not together and there's just continous issues in your relationship without truly talking about it. this was the most beautiful gl ive ever watched. its so scenic, somehow so romantic yet realistic. yi kyoung was able to grow as she got older but didnt find the stability in the love she had with sui like they once had as teenagers. in the end, she decided that what she wanted she couldn't get from sui. sui's self esteem is what affected their relationship the most and created a harmful barrier of no communication. they loved each other, and they tried to make it work, but in the end they found themselves better off without each other. what a moving story ❤

This was... pretty painful to watch. It's really similar to something I went through for years that culminated a few months back.
I don't agree that this is a 'sad' ending. Bittersweet sure, but not sad. Relationships like that aren't happy to be in, where you feel like you don't even know your partner, even though you've been together for years.
I respect the choice to not make Eunji more important, to make that relationship last longer or be superior. I'm with a partner I'm happy with now, but I don't think that's a prerequisite. Being alone is a lot better than being with someone you can't talk to, if only because you don't feel like you're doing it wrong.
A relationship is something you're in because it brings you joy, it's a special gift in your life, not a requirement. I thought I knew that, but I didn't, until recently. Don't settle for something, don't persist, it'll be hard for a while - it was hard for Sui, it was hard for Yikung too (*really* get the 'no right to cry' attitude), but it's a temporary sadness. You'll be happier.
Korean gl taught me no matter how much u love the other person and bring happiness to them individually. If you are poor you will get cheated on and be left behind.

This is just my interpretation of the film, but I think the common heron is supposed to be sui. Their romance starts with Yi-Kyoung asking what the name of the bird was, asking to get to know sui. The film ends with Yi-Kyoung coming to realize while the heron was common that does not mean it was any less magnificent than other birds.

Sui reminds me of myself, except that in mine , we knew each other so well. My first love was the best thing thaat happened. We were mutual in almost everything, our sense of humor and our feelings. Unfortunately, it ended in a rough way, we were a year and 1 month in. On december 24,2023 , i had a bad time with my mental health at that time; so i wanted to talk about it to her and chatted "*her name*" and after that i couldn't bring myself to talk about it to her anymore. She kept on chatting me and I ghosted her for 3 days. On the third day, she called me for the last time, i saw the notification pop up and I wanted to answer let it all out but instead i pressed the red button and ended it, she gave up and said "okay". After the christmas break, January, i told someone in my class about what happened about us while we were doing our project, she really wanted to know the reason why i did it then i lied and told her i was turned off cause of her face; someone probably heard us and told her or she heard it herself cause she knew what the lie was. it's the regret i hate the most that i will take to my fucking grave. She was angry and tried to hurt me the same hurt i gave her. Two months after, March, i had the courage to give her a letter and wrote her everything, she replied two days after. I'm glad i did it. I haven't moved on until now, i think im still in love with her and i hope im not cause she moved on.

I think I saw things differently than some of the other viewers. When she saw the heron at the end to me it was symbolic of realizing, that plain, common everyday bird, is really something special. It symbolizes that solid day in and day out woman that women thumb their noses at cause "they ain't shiny". Girl didn't realize what she had. That solid 365, 24/7 one, that's serious business, and you don't throw that away. She'd been lucky to find sui cause that, doesn't just come around. She threw it all away for a fling. As far as sui's faults, she's not perfect. No one is. Take those tiny cracks and keep 'em, it's worth it.
