  • This video is for everyone who wants to know how to trim (handstrip) an Airedale terrier’s eyebrows to create the desired terrier expression.
There is no set or pre-determined exact length or amount to leave on your terrier, because every terrier is a unique individual with different proportions and head size, so trim to what your dog needs to be as close to the breed standard as possible. We want to achieve the ideal terrier expression; keen, alert and intelligent. Eyes should appear dark, small and not prominent. Using and shaping eyebrows can help us to achieve this goal.
Also beauty is subjective, and what is considered ideal in one person’s eyes may not be desired for another person. I’m merely sharing my personal approach to how I trim my dogs’ eyebrows, other trimmers may use a different method or different tools to achieve the style they like. Everyone can have differing styles they find aesthetically pleasing. So do what you think is best for your own dog.
The metal detailer I used in this video is from greyhoundcomb.com It is called the Detailer. It is very good for creating the separation between the brows and the stop. From the inner corner of the eye socket, create an ultra thin vertical line with this tool pulling very little hairs to make an invisible space between brow and stop.
The 2nd metal stripper I used that has double ends, one end straight and end curved is called the Skipper Stripper. You can find this tool by contacting Skip Begeot on Facebook. I use the skipper stripper to shape the length of brows and to thin out the transition area above the eye lid. I also use fingers if my transition area doesn’t require too much taken out.
The 3rd tool I use is the Mars M320 detailer to clean and tighten the brow bone itself above the transition area.

Hi Sheila and Raja. Admire your work and Raja patience. It’s a very useful headrest pillow you are using, would you share where to get it, or what to look for. Thanks.

the website is here. pantsfordogs.com/collections/pillows/products/top-knot-pillow You can choose regular size and there are many colors to choose from. I get the mini size to train my puppies to lay their head down and the standard size when they become adults.

You are so welcome! I hope you will continue to handstrip your dog and not give up learning how to do it on your own.

What you gave this dog, that it lies so tired? Probably his whole life, has been trimming...

it needs a lot of training and the dog learns to lie or stand patiently while trimming. my airedale quite likes the attention he gets while being trimmed. also, my airedale gets lots of workout (especially before trimming sessions). i guess sheila does the same :)

hi @Sole S, I didn't give this dog anything to make it lie down or lie tired. No, his whole life is not spent trimming. Believe it or not, I have a full time job outside of my dog life, in fact, I work very hard to give my dogs the best life, the best food, the best toys, the best school classes (yes my dogs attend school) and we go to weekend sports trials. We have a very full active life. As for how he is so calm for grooming, I have spent many hours training my dogs to lie calmly or sit or stand calmly. Teaching grooming table manners takes time, but it is incredibly valuable when I want to save time in the long run. Both my dogs and myself are happy and calm, which makes grooming more fun and enjoyable for both species, human and dogs. We never get frustrated, we never get impatient, he waits for me to finish grooming, and I do my work, so we can go play as a reward.

You're right Daniela, it absolutely requires A LOT of training to teach grooming table manners to my puppies and the teaching doesn't stop even as they have grown and matured into adults. But once the foundational table skills are established, grooming life forever becomes easy afterward. And yes, the dogs get to run and exercise first before we begin any grooming session.
