One thing I have seen others do with this pressure pot is poor silicone into the bottom and let it set/harden before first use. Just another alternative to placing a block of wood with your favorite superhero inside of it. :D Thanks for this video! I also watched a few of your other videos and they are great stuff! This is a whole new hobby world that is exciting!
I've been using pressure/vacuum cycles for resin casting for about 40 years. If you have long enough working time you can first vacuum to expand bubbles and get them to float to the top, then while the resin is still not cured, increase the pressure to 4-5 atmospheres and this will collapse remaining bubbles and make a more dense casting. This is a well done presentation on making a pressure pot out of a paint pot. Well Done! The vacuum cycle can cause the resin to foam up and run over the top of the containment so you really need a window so you can see what's going on inside the pot.
thanks for this. i’ve seen a few guides on how to do this conversion but none that actually showed the process step by step. gonna get my pot set up this weekend i guess!

Hey jake, great video! Made it really easy to retro-fit the system for this use. I'm having an issue that the hole in the regulator that allows it to set the pressure, constantly leaks no matter which way the regulator knob is turned. Am I doing something wrong?
I am having the same issue on two pots. Can't for the life of me find another 60psi value to replace it with. Tempted to just cap it off completely, my compressor only puts out 110psi, and the pot is good for 90psi, so unless I'm using gross negligence, I shouldn't have any problems??
Thank you so much....I got your link from Kim Tippin. I thought this was going to be a difficult process but you made it easy... May get my pot and parts today.......Thanks again for keeing it simple!

Zac Fitzgerald you could possibly look for public workshops in your area. Some places have areas such as maker spaces where you can use machines and other tools.
@@shmoopy4265 I have actually! The only one out here rents space on a monthly basis for around $250. That being said, I could always ask to just make a few quick cuts. Not sure if they'd let me just run in and out like that though. But yeah, bit rich for what I need unfortunately. I did come up with a solution though, just need to find a metal wire rack for displaying baked goods or whatever. One that'll fit in the pot and maybe even a multi layer one? If I find anything I'll try to report back! But I think that might be my best solution, assuming I can find one that's the right size.
Am I the only one that noticed he put the teflon tape on wrong? Good video btw. Thinking about buying one of these. Although the reviews on HF are not so great. But they are a good price
Grow Your Heirlooms I think the only other one that noticed was on reddit. But I expect that out of them... good news is it doesn’t leak. The tank works pretty good for this.. if you are going to do bigger castings, go for a bigger one.
Thank you so much! Your instructional video is easier to follow than others on this same project. Because of you, I just successfully tested my first pressure pot.
It looks like you are applying the Teflon tape against the direction of the threads, why? The tape should end in the same direction the treads are going to get a better fit. Going against the threads will rip the tape off the fitting when you screw it on!
No Name I’ve had it for a long time now with no leaks at any threads.. you are correct and about the 10th person to point it out.. I hope you got something out of the video besides my substandard tape job.
@@JakeThompson Good video Jake. The idea with tape is no leaks, you succeded. Before tape my dad taught me to rub bar soap liberally on threads...that works too.
Thanks for the great video Jake, I had a vague idea of what I needed to do, but you really clarified it for me. I will say this tho... because my local "big box" store is usually lacking in the restocking department, I had to do design on the fly kinda thing while standing in the air tool isle. Because of that, I ended up buying extra stuff just to avoid a return trip. I ended up realizing that you only need three adapters. I didn't use the supplied "T" or gauge. I relocated the blow out valve the same as you, but the input is just the hose adapter to a ball valve to an inline pressure gauge. It's just a much simpler version of what you showed us. Thanks for getting me pointed in the right direction... can't wait to use it!!
That's just proof for people that do not put resin under pressure. The difference is clear... pun intended here... lol. I only say that because buying blanks from someone else and paying twice as just doesn't make sense when you can create them yourself. Are you also going to be stabilizing wood?
Tracy Keaton I will get into stabilizing in the very near future. This process is a lot of fun for me. The creative aspect of it is endless, I can’t wait to see where this takes my mind. The downside for me is getting the wood, like burls and such is difficult and will be expensive. The pressure pot was fun to convert and a very mandatory piece of the puzzle. I’m glad you enjoyed the video!! 👍👍
Jake.....I buy ALOT of wood burl on ebay from 2 pple mostly.....their store names are . www.ebay.com/usr/charleselkan?_trksid=p2053788.m1543.l2754 for CharlesElkan and www.ebay.com/usr/antlersexpress?_trksid=p2053788.m1543.l2754 for Anltersexpress.......they are VERY fair on prices and in my opinion have the best looking and fastest shipping.....they are the ONLY ones I buy maple burl from!!!.....check them out, you won't be disappointed!!
@@richardmoser6068 there are some other videos demonstrating compression vs. Decompression. Compression hides the bubbles. They have no place to escape to with pressure may even pack a little more air into it than it already had. When the air pressure is taken off in a vacuum chamber the bubbles expand and float out but this creates foam, the foam rises out of the vessel and before the bubbles can pop/ collapse the resin sets up making a huge mess. You can remove gases from water and at very low pressures water will even cold boil. Think about a soda bottle under pressure the co2 gas is invisible, pop the top releasing pressure it expands and you can see bubbles.. as it has a way out.
I've been told that the best way to wrap Teflon tape onto threading is to wrap clockwise, looking from the bore closest to you. I think it keeps the Teflon from bunching up. Great video. I am about to take the ol' Pressure Pot Plunge. 😄
Yeah … EVERYONE… noticed that I put the tape on backwards but, at the end of the wrap I pull the tape up and tight along the threads.. and it never leaked.. but I understand I’m on the internet and everyone is a plumber 😂😂😂 I’m glad you enjoyed the video and have fun casting 🦾🦾
@@JakeThompson Actually that's a bad idea. - prevents changing in the future - that would be a LOT more $$$ - precludes taking out platform if you need a bit more room at the top.
Does anyone know how to physically adjust the relief valve, the two slots around the little bar? I tried with two screw drivers but it's just damaging the slots and not turning it.
Been thinking making a pressure pot/getting a pressure pot was out of my price range. This + a little compressor from HF is doable. Thank you for posting!

Thank You so much for sharing this process!!! I have been so intimidated by using the pot for casting. But I think I'll be giving it a shot this weekend that's to your walk through.
Thank you for this video! However the one I got has the two bolts from the base that refuse to come out ;; Is there any way to work around it? No amount of liquid wrench, wd40 or anything else helps oTL
A vice? I am expecting this to be hard? You have not taken apart very many Harbor Freight tools... You give them WAY too much credit. Great presentation. I interested in this and feel much more confident now. Thanks for approach, laying everything out, full explanation.
Jake, your instructions were spot - on! However, my converted pressure pot still leaks enough that I'm not able to put a casting in it. I tested all the fittings with soapy water and no bubbles so I'm guessing it's the lid gasket. I cranked down the lid as tight as I could with tools - didn't want to break the screws - and ran it to 30 lbs and after about an hour it was down to 20. I'm dying to put my first try project in it. Any suggestions from you or the other subscribers as for how to condition a Harbor Freight gasket? Or is it something else?
There is an updated gasket you can get from Amazon, but you can leave the air hooked up to it in the meantime and let the regulator keep it at the right pressure
Thnx Jake!!.....I did the exact same thing with the HF pressure pot but ended up just taking the pressure regulator off for 2 reasons.....it failed to work properly and started leaking...... and 2...I wanted to use it for a vacuum chamber as well......you don't need the regulator since you do have a gauge and a ball valve.......I assume that if you are getting into the casting part of woodworking, then you will eventually start to stabilize wood as well......and that pressure pot works extremely well for both purposes.......Great video nonetheless.......thnx for what you do to help many pple with their struggle in beginning the woodworking trade!!......your videos are very informative and extremely helpful for many pple!!
AntiLißTard ed Thank you So much!! Comments like this one are why I make these videos. My biggest challenge will be getting wood to stabilize, not much to chose from around here. dtork47 Very Welcome, glad you enjoyed it!👍👍
Thanks Jake, followed your instructions and built this thing in about 10 mins. Works great!
Jay Van Awesome!! I’m glad I could help!! 👍
May get my pot and parts today.......Thanks again for keeing it simple!
robert simms Absolutely!! I’m going to thank Kim for sending you my way!! 👍👍
@@JakeThompson Got the pot yesterday and the pieces HF had. Our Lowe's didn't have the elbow and cap so looking elsewhere. Should be done tomorrow....or as soon as I locate the elbow and cap! Thanks again!
Just a quick note: The size of the current 6/22 pop off seems to be different than the connector. Unless I was shipped the wrong item and didn't notice. (It's not a big deal. I was so incredibly delighted to have the shopping links for shopping ease.)
When you get the correct fitting can you tell me the right size fitting so I can change the link.. I’m glad you enjoyed the links
@@JakeThompson yours is correct. They sent the wrong item. Thank you so much for the reply!!!!! And the tutorial!!!
By far the best and definitive video on how to do this. Thanks so much for taking the time to help us nubes out here!
Louis Lux Absolutely!! Thank you!!! 👍👍
The 3/8 pipe threads were likely metric.
Thank you for a great video. I've watched several but no one but you showed all the parts you need. I finally feel confident I can do this. YOU ROCK!
Very welcome Yvonne.. glad you enjoyed it. 😁 Thanks for the Sweet Tea! 😁😁
Please don't use petroleum jelly on rubber gaskets or seals, it deteriorates the rubber much faster. Use a silicone type.
Thanks for this. I went out yesterday and bought a HF paint pot and compressor, and I'm looking forward to making some good pen blanks.
Awesome.. you will have lots of fun!!
After many Questions from this video, I made a follow up video, I hope it Helps you out! Video HERE: ruclips.net/video/QYzsDTMVIK8/видео.html

Jake, thank you for showing me this video. I am going today to get my pressure pot.
Awesome... you are welcome!!
Any chance someone would be willing to help me make a caddy for the inside on this thing? I don't have access to a cnc. Honestly just need two rounds cut from mdf. Message me if we can work something out.
Zac Fitzgerald you could possibly look for public workshops in your area. Some places have areas such as maker spaces where you can use machines and other tools.
@@shmoopy4265
I have actually!
Thanks Jake. Your video helped me convert a pot and now I’m slowly getting into more resin projects. Thanks!!!
I noticed. Not all of them though.
@@JakeThompson yes I did notice that about the tape also.lol
Thank you so much! Your instructional video is easier to follow than others on this same project. Because of you, I just successfully tested my first pressure pot.
elevatordancer Awesome. I’m glad I could help you out!👍👍
It looks like you are applying the Teflon tape against the direction of the threads, why?
I tried to upload a pic.
AntiLißTard ed Thanks a lot.. I will check it out!! 👍👍
The bubbles are way less of an issue if you're making things with opaque resins.
@@AaaaNinja yes but I think what he wants is clear so you can see what has been embedded in the resin
Just bought one yesterday. Glad I found your video.
Awesome!! Have fun casting! 👍👊
What you're actually doing is compressing the bubbles so they are so small you can't really see them.
Dave B 👍👍👍
I would think that the pressure actually compresses the resin forcing the bubbles out faster than the other techniques such as heating the material.
`why not pour alumilite in the bottom of the pot for leveling it...
headlightdog That’s a pretty good idea.. 👍👍
headlightdog if your resin spills over the two will become one. That is why you would not want to pour resin into the bottom
@@JakeThompson Actually that's a bad idea.
- prevents changing in the future
- that would be a LOT more $$$
- precludes taking out platform if you need a bit more room at the top.
This will finally convince my hubby (and me) to buy a pot!!! Thanks for the tutorial!!
Gayle Greer Awesome!! I’m glad I could help ya out!👍👊

Does anyone know how to physically adjust the relief valve, the two slots around the little bar?
I tried with two screw drivers but it's just damaging the slots and not turning it.
After many Questions from this video, I made a follow up video, I hope it Helps you out! Video HERE: ruclips.net/video/QYzsDTMVIK8/видео.html
Great video. I just bought my pressure tank from Harbor Freight and ordered the hardware from Amazon. Can’t wait to assemble and try it.
fefabre Thank you!! Have lots of fun casting!! 👍👍👊
Got my parts today and put the pot together. Tomorrow will be my first use and looking forward to it.
Been thinking making a pressure pot/getting a pressure pot was out of my price range. This + a little compressor from HF is doable. Thank you for posting!
Taylor Payne If course.. Thank you!!
Thank You for posting your conversion process. Just bought the pot and now I have a list of the extra parts needed and how to do it. Great Video.
George Tonkovic Awesome!!! Have fun!!
Your videos are hands down the best for learning. You're very thorough, knowledgeable and you consistently make everything accessible through links so no searching for any of the products. Out of a 5 star rating, you deserve a 10. I'm a follower for life lol
Thank you Samantha ❤️❤️
Thank You so much for sharing this process!!! I have been so intimidated by using the pot for casting. But I think I'll be giving it a shot this weekend that's to your walk through.
Awesome!! Very welcome
Thank you for this video! However the one I got has the two bolts from the base that refuse to come out ;; Is there any way to work around it? No amount of liquid wrench, wd40 or anything else helps oTL
Very welcome.. You could try applying heat to it.
@@JakeThompson Just got around to it and that was it! Thank you so much for the tutorial!
Cool video, I’m new to resin casting and turning and this video answered a lot of questions about using a pressure pot. Great job.
Thank you! I’m glad I could help you out.. plenty more videos to come. 👍👍
Helped so much for someone who had no idea how to do this. Thank you! ❤️
Very welcome Heather!! Glad I could help. 😁😁
Did you take the small silver bolt out of the under side of the top? AT 5:30 you take the top part off but under it has a silver bolt as well
The bolt underneath is a diffuser.. it stays
@@JakeThompson Great thank you Jake. All finished nothing left but to try it now. Thank you
Tried it and there were leaks however I did go and get some Loctite and wait 24 hours and that did the trick. Thank you again.
A vice? I am expecting this to be hard? You have not taken apart very many Harbor Freight tools... You give them WAY too much credit. Great presentation. I interested in this and feel much more confident now. Thanks for approach, laying everything out, full explanation.
The Duke Of Earl I’m glad you liked the video.. I watched other videos and the people struggled with the pipe.. I was surprised it was so easy.. 😂 👍👊
Also .. here’s another video and the link to the seal is in the pinned comment.
That makes sense about the regulator, I’m sure I will change things as I go forward and I will show the changes in future videos. Thank you so much and I’m happy you enjoy my videos!!
My concern is that someone might not set regulator to max and it would display a pressure much less was actually being applied to the pot.
how do you adjust the safety valve on these mine is releasing at 30psi, and I cant figure out how to up the pressure by 10 to 15 psi
Here ya go ruclips.net/video/QYzsDTMVIK8/видео.html
Thanks I have been dreaming of starting to support my younger customers with the lower end pens.
I have been refusing to do anything plastic until your presentation.

Raymond Gannon That’s great!! I’m glad you liked the video and hope you have fun doing this!!
Yeah you need that 3/8 pipe tap because I bent the 1/4 brass fitting getting it in there at video 4:21
Lol right!!
Thanks for putting links to the mods in the description. I just ordered them.

Problem with the seal anything I can do?
There’s a link to a better seal in the first comment and in the description
Whats the link?
@@JakeThompson There isn't a link for the seal in either
Again I had the preview to this when I visited you to do the inlay on the cutting board.
We're back from our road trip so I'll be random orbit sanding for a while.
Steve Gronsky Lol.. get that sander warmed up buddy!! 👍👊
thank you! you explained this in a way even this old lady can almost understand. Not sure I could re-tool the screw hole or adjust the pressure valve, but I bet I can find someone who could do it for me. Now, if I just don't blow up my garage....lol
Pam Miller Lol I’m sure you can do it!! I’m glad you enjoyed the video! 😄😄
Great video, thanks! I followed this and things worked out just fine. Just a heads up to fellow Canadians (with no harbour freight) that you can buy an identical pressure pot at Princess Auto (a national chain). All the parts and steps outlined in this excellent video worked well for me on the princess auto pressure pot.
DM Awesome. I’m happy to hear the video helped you, and now I can tell Canadians where to get a pot from.. good stuff! 👍👍
@@JakeThompson The only issue I ended up having was some air leakage with the teflon tape. I ended up redoing it using a liquid thread sealer (Loctite 545) and now it holds 50 psi for 24 hours. And I'm casting resin!
DM Awesome!!! Now you’re in business!!
Love your scoreboard in the back.
Polly Robinson Thank you Polly!! 😄😄
Good job Jake. This is another of the rabbit holes i want to get into
Harneal Media Lol jump in feet first like I do.., lol
LOL I do that too often already.
Thank you for the simple way to convert the pressure pot.
Marshall Brummel Thank you for watching Marshall!! 👍👊
Oh hell yeah!
I've been contemplating on doing just this for some time, already made a degassing chamber (12x12" unit from a helium bottle) but high pressure scares the s**t out of me so I've been putting it off.
Now I've seen it done successfully, I may just have to put it on my "to do" list now, thanks for showing us the way :D
WrenagadeWorkshop Lol!! Lots of people use the harbor freight pot. I did get a bigger one.. should make a video this week, nothing wrong with the harbor freight one though.
